Who's reading dreamtime (6):
Here's another lame attempt at inviting comments from fellow Soulcasters... :-)

Shakespeare... Some would have hated him. some would have loved him. Some would have just seen him as an integral part of English education. But, we can't deny that he is as stuck to the English language as our nails are stuck to our flesh. (Of course, there is the minor issue of nails outgrowing the flesh and being cut off. But, we will ignore that defect in the analogy for the time being.)

There are many quotations from Shakespeare that I find rather useful in different contexts. But, the following is perhaps my favourite:

"The rest is silence"

Those were Hamlet's last words and I find it a very useful way to terminate a discussion. :-)

The other one that I particularly like would be Polonius' advice to his son:

"This above all: to thine own self be true,
And it must follow, as the night the day,
Thou canst not then be false to any man."

And I shall leave with this little favourite from Merchant of Venice....

"The man that hath no music in himself,
Nor is not mov'd with concord of sweet sounds,
Is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils."

So, what are your favourite lines from the Bard?

I found it pretty deep when I was fourteen, and I decided to give up Shakespeare from then ;)

If I had ever managed to consider Shakespeare even a quarter as great as history has made him - even a tenth - I would probably have lots of quotes. Sadly, since graduating from high school 17 years ago me and Shakey have been out of touch.

I have, however, been intrigued by how many ways certain lines have been interpreted in plays and movies, and Hamlet's response to the question about what he's reading - "Words, words, words," - is an example of a very simple sentence that can be interpreted in so many ways. I liked the Mel Gibson response. However, I feel it could mean many things depending on how you saw it. And what are we all reading here on SoulCast?

    "Words, words, words."

But surely there's more to it than that. :)

words, words, words... that's one that like as well... very useful to throw around when one is writing... its so amazingly amenable to interpretation.
