The place where I work is a small casual environment. Everyone is friends with everyone, and we're not exactly known for our formalities here. A lot of the time no one else comes into the office so we can wear whatever clothes we want and listen to whatever music we want. But sometimes we have clients that come in who want to see what it is we're working on for them. And on those days, I try to dress a little nicer and we make sure the music isn't too loud or obnoxious.

But the other day we failed miserably. Someone had put the radio on the pop/dance station. Which is actually a station that I hate with a fiery passion. I threatened to shoot out the speakers if I had to listen to Britney Spears singing about a womanizer one more time. It's totally nerve wracking listening to her crappy music. But then some wise guy put it on country instead, and that was even worse. Not to mention that only one person in the whole place actually liked that. So it got put back on the dance station.

I wasn't paying attention though because I guess at the time, the songs must have been halfway decent. But I went to meet with some clients, and we're sitting in this little quiet room talking about business crap. And then this song comes on and it seemed way louder than the other songs. And this guy is singing something like, "I'm gonna bend you over and smack that, oh yeah oh yeah, smack that until you're sore..."

I was so embarrassed because these people were older and apparently not appreciative of that sort of music. They looked horrified. But I couldn't help laughing because the song was just so bad and inappropriate. But after seeing their expression, I paused the meeting and went out and flipped the station to the easy listening hits of the 70's and 80's. Everyone seemed to hate that, but I made it the new office policy that we all better learn to love it, because I didn't want to be embarrassed anymore when clients were there. We couldn't be listening to the smack that ass song anymore!

Personally, I'm kind of digging this easy listening station. It reminds me of my childhood. It's the type of crap my mom always listened to. And I couldn't help singing along with the theme song to the Greatest American Hero. I think I was only about 4 or 5 when that TV show tanked, but I remember I wanted to be that guy. He was a bumbling idiotic superhero who couldn't fly very well. I could relate to that. And it's pretty irresistible to start singing, "believe it or not, I'm walking on air, I never thought I could feel so free!" I dare you not to sing it!

Of course now everyone thinks I'm a dork. But what's new right? This station stands. Because at least it's safe for work, right? Although I never knew Barry Manilow had so many songs....wow.

LOL @ Barry Manilow having so many songs...  I agree, smacking asses at work might not be too good, but easy listening?  mrM listens to that, and it drives me crazy.  I wouldn't be popular either -- my choice would either be country or classic rock.

hi! just thought i'd chime in...i would've been mortified with both the smacking that ass song OR the country station ;) now granted there is a time and a place for the smacking asses songs (the local meatmarket dance club) but (i'm sorry if i piss anyone off) there is never a time or place for the country music in my world ;)

hip hop has no business being played in any public forum....you never know what you're going to get.....I am pleasantly surprised how many younger adults are turning to country now.....I visit a lot of businesses with young adults in them on a regular basis....a few years ago, it seems like there was a lot more of the hip hop crap.....not so much now.

LMAO! I've heard that song you're talking about and it is pretty bad. I've also heard that Britney Spears song too. Ack. My apologies to any Britney fans out there, but who told that chick she could sing?

At my job we have to listen to those easy listening songs too. I have no choice because I'm not in a position to touch the radio dial, lest I be smacked down.

I was subjected to Barry Manilow singing Mandy the other day. And about how he writes the songs that make the whole world sing. I think it should be changed to: I write the songs that make the whole world cover their ears and cry....

Okay - I have a confession - I love light music stations!  While a died in the wool Classic Rocker (Hendrix, Beatles, Dead, Joplin, Who etc) and I love stadium rock - there are times when I turn on the local "oldies" station and listen to "Beach Baby", "Afternoon Delight", all the goodies from the 60's and 70's.   And nothing makes me happier than hearing Neil Diamond sing "Sweet Caroline" when I am driving down the road, blaring the music and belting out "oh, oh, oh.. Good times never felt so good (so good, so good, so good) . . . . But shhhhh - don't tell anyone, okay?

Besides - Britney Spears is not music!

Our airport plays satellite radio really loud all day, and the music is great....Van Morrison, Fleetwood Mac, Bob Seger....all my favorites.
I was singing away with Phoebe Snow one day when I overheard one of the young girls say to another young girl, "Oh my God, it's some old fart's mix tape!"

yeah, barry manalow was as popular as kiss back then. and the greatest american hero woulda flown much better if he hadn't lost the instruction manual to the suit :D

LOL only you could make a statement like "but I made it the new office policy that we all better learn to love it".  I've worked in places where the management has picked out honest to goodness elevator muzak.  I think in a work environment you need to consider customers and the whole staff when picking a station.  They can go home and listen to smack your ass music while you're singing along with Barry. ;)

paper--Thanks for sharing the video! That brought back memories. I barely remember the show, but I knew I thought it was funny how he could never seem to fly right. They don't make cheesy TV shows like that anymore....

Infernal--Their expressions were pretty priceless! They just kept staring at the ceiling with a look of disgust.

Mimi--I could get on board with the classic rock, but I'm afraid country hurts my ears. I've tried to like it, but it's just not possible :-P

fraggles--I have to agree with you there. I can't get into country music at all. And the smacking ass song would have been okay if I wasn't at work trying to impress people with my professionalism :-P

D6--I have to agree that hip hop isn't usually suitable for a business. Because you just never know what the lyrics are going to be about! I don't know how popular country music is around here, but I don't know very many people who listen to it. It could be a regional thing.

Mr. Box--Yeah, I've had to listen to Barry singing about his songs and Mandy and how it looks like he made it, etc. But at least he doesn't sing about smacking asses! :-P And if he does, then I don't think I wanna hear that one....

FG--It's embarrassing to admit you like some of these songs huh? Sweet Caroline came on the other day and you can't help but sing! My mom used to LOVE that song, so it just reminds me of being in the car with her when I was a kid, and she'd turn it up really loud. Ah, the memories...

Twyla--We have Sirius satellite radio at work too. What station do you listen to? Because that one sounds pretty good and still safe for work. I don't think it's an old farts mix tape :-P I like that music!

    queen--It was pretty funny :-P

trav--Is that why he couldn't fly? He lost the instruction manual? That's funny! I was too little to actually remember that part, but I just know I liked it.

uniquely--They have a muzak station I could put it on, but that would make everyone jump out the window! At least the easy listening station you can sing along with. At least if you're me..... :-P

yeah et. it was in the pilot episode. part of the story line was that he had to learn by experience how the suit worked. and it was left on his doorstep by aliens, they never really found out why. i watched the first few, then kinda lost interest i guess. it didn't last very long.
  • evil_twin said on Nov 09, 2008....
trav--I'm guessing that the show was probably more appealing to me because I was only like 4 years old at the time :-P And watching a superhero crash into buildings or smash on the ground, was big entertainment!
