Last night when I was laying on the couch watching TV and talking to Nat, I saw something huge walk across this white box we had sitting across the room. It was something brown and crawly and really fast. And I asked her if she saw it. She said no, and I got up and examined the box and everything around it, and I didn't see anything. I thought maybe I was imagining it. So I sat back down, and we finished our show. Then we went to get ready for bed.

I had already brushed my teeth and all that, and I was lying in bed waiting for Nat to finish up. And then all of a sudden she starts screaming. It freaked me out, so I jumped up and ran into the bathroom asking her what was wrong. And she's pointing at the wall just by the sink, and there is this monstrosity of a bug sitting there. It was the same thing I'd seen in the living room! And it traveled down the hall around the corner and into our bathroom?? That's a fast little fucker.

But the thing is, I have never in my life seen anything like this. And I searched online and saw nothing similar. It was about 2 1/2 inches long, brown with a flattened body, like a Silverfish. But then it had about 60 legs coming off the sides. But it wasn't a centipede at all. The legs were incredibly long like spider legs. And that sucker moved fast! I could barely kill it fast enough.

Has anyone ever seen a bug like that? Do you know what it is? I wanna know what it is so I can figure out how scared we should be of it :-P

UGH I hate bugs.  I have no idea what that is...but a couple weeks ago we found this ugly thing in my house  spider

I spent forever looking for what it was on the internet but I think this was it....which scares the crap out of me because apparently you can find them in iraq and they can get as big as your leg.....I am so glad this was tiny compared to that otherwise I think I would have just died from the sight!  I have no idea how it got to my state though!

  • tizzygirl said on Nov 07, 2008....
    oh...if this is it... bug
    then it's a house centipede I guess....ick...

Okay well I'm completely hogging up your post but I'm bored out of my mind....SO...I was reading on the house centipede and I've decided even though it's ugly and freaky and apparently leave purple goo when you smoosh it....I kind of like the little fellow....apparently he is an  insectivore, it kills and eats insects....so if you let him live you would have no other bugs in your house!  AND I've learned a whole new word today...insectivore, I had no idea there was such a word.  I figured it'd just be a carnivore...but I guess insects aren't meat.  Anyway, I'll leave your post alone now, I'll go be bored elsewhere.

I was thinking of the same bug tizzygirl put up.

I know better than to click on those links, tizzy.  [ewww]

Poor Nat!  I'd scream too, and probably need a sedative.  ;)

sorry, no clue.  I tend to run in the opposite direction of bugs.
  • CreativeWoman said on Nov 07, 2008....
I would have killed the sucker and asked questions later too.  :-)  I hope that's the only one of them you have in the house.

OMG, ewwwww! Seriously, if that "house centipede" is what you had in your house, there's yet another reason I'm never moving to CA. You guys have some freaky bugs! :-p Better than a spider, but not by much!

Oh how gross, but unfortunately I don't know what it is either.  I wanna know what it is though if you do find out!

I don't have the exclamation I would like to use it English. Horrible. No, I have certainly never seen a bug like that in my northern climate. Oh my god, poor you.
  • travelr712 said on Nov 07, 2008....
nope, never seen anything like that, and i hope i never do!
  • wishyouwerehere said on Nov 07, 2008....

eWWWW - I would have totally freaked out.  Taran and I have a running joke about this.  I see some pretty gross medical stuff at work and it doesn't really phase me, but a bug like that in my bathroom would probably make me pass out!

Glad you offed him - Wishy

  • GrapeKoolaid said on Nov 07, 2008....
The ones that invade your personal space must be dealt with.  I mean, you don't go around to their places and creep them out when they're trying to sleep, do you?
  • pusscat said on Nov 07, 2008....
Aaaaw Kyle - you killed it?  Poor thing.  It may have been really innocent and harmless.  You know how the big things are often harmless and the little tiny critters nip and kill ya?

Funny but as a kid I had almost a fobia about creepy crawlies.  Even sat in the hallway one night for 2 hours waiting for my dad to come home and get rid of a spider and a moth in the living room LOL!  Now?  I love everything - even if I don't really like it, it may not like me either.

The knack is if you get to love nature enough - you'll tolerate anything.  wish I knew what it was though.  Sure am sad for it though.  I'll forgive you though Kyle cos I know that apart from this one little event, you're one of the good guys :)
  • Mamie said on Nov 07, 2008....
blech! yes i have seen the bug that tizzy linked, was that what it was? They are in Pa as well and I have killed two in my house. Yep they are fast, but *I* am faster [blowing the fire out on my trigger finger...]
    :))
  • evil_twin said on Nov 07, 2008....
fraggles--You bet I mooshed him! Nat wouldn't sleep in the house if I didn't :-P (And I'm not sure I would have either....)

tizzy--You're totally awesome. You found my mystery bug! It's an ugly thing isn't it? I've never seen one of those before in  my life. I guess it's a good thing if it eats other insects, but I still don't want it living in my house! Thanks for puzzling out the mystery for me though :-)

queen--I did kill it and Tizzygirl figured out what it was!

beyond--Yup, you guys were both right. Do you see a lot of those where you live?

Mimi--Nat was traumatized because she was brushing her teeth and she leaned over the sink to spit, and when she looked up, it was staring her right in the face!

uniquely--I hope you never see one of these in your house....

CW--Nat was afraid there were more and said she felt like their million spider legs were crawling all over her. But since I've never once seen one before, surely there can't be more?? I hope not!

Infernal--Yup, it was a house centipede. I've never seen one before, so I don't know how common they really are here. But I don't want to see one again!

hegemone--It is a house centipede, apparently. Tizzygirl posted a link to a lovely picture of this scary thing....

ginger--Things without legs freak you out? For me, it was the amount of legs and how long they were that creeped me out. Ugh. I don't like any bugs though, legless or not!

skald--You're lucky you don't have bugs like that in Iceland. It wasn't a pleasant experience!

trav--I hope you never do either!

wishy--Nat is a nurse so she's used to gross things too. But when you cut open a patient at least spiders and centipedes don't pour out! That would make for an interesting horror movie....

    winterslight--I hate them too.

Grape--Exactly. I don't go the centipedes house and scare him! He needs to go away or die.
  • evil_twin said on Nov 07, 2008....
pusscat--If I didn't kill it, I don't think my wife would have slept in the house last night! I'm not a bug person at all either, so I didn't want to touch it even. It can be harmless all it wants outside, but it can't come in my house! I'm glad I'm still one of the good guys though ;-)

mamie--Yeah, the pic Tizzy linked was the bug we had. It's gross! And they are really fast....
  • wombat said on Nov 07, 2008....
I see you just answered comments, so you can let this one slide.  Just wanted to agree that's one ugly bug!  Any creature that shows up and  you have to ask, "What the heck is that?" is too creepy to be in your home.  Glad you squished it.
  • FutureGoddess said on Nov 07, 2008....
Actually, it is a centipede - its called a household centipede and it's nasty and fast.  And you are not supposed to kill them because they eat all the other bugs (like spiders) - however, that won't stop me from having the exterminator here on tuesday to spray for these suckers!  I HATE THEM.  (google household centipedes and you will see a picture - nasty f#ckers!
  • SeanRenaud said on Nov 07, 2008....
Evil Twin, what state do you live in?  I just want to know where I'm sending the nukes to preven that damn thing from coming to my house.  IF you are a Californian. . .then I hope your far enough north that I can nuke you safely.  If not.  . .MAD doesn't apply to insects, if I gotta go I'll feel better knowing I took him with us.
  • evil_twin said on Nov 07, 2008....
wombat--I'm glad I squished it too. It needed to go!

FG--Yeah you're right. Someone posted a pic of it up farther. I looked on a site with centipedes listed and that one wasn't there. So I didn't that's what it was. But yuck! It can eat insects OUTSIDE, but not in my house!

Sean--Sorry man, but I'm in So-Cal too. You better be on the lookout for that nasty thing. And if I see a mushroom cloud, I'll think of you before I die.
  • SeanRenaud said on Nov 07, 2008....
Your house is the only known sighting of the monster.  Hense your house is ground zero.  Sorry bout that.  Wish you well in all.  If you ever happen to wander through Riverside/Ontario/Fontana I'll buy you a beer, or whatever the bloody it is you drink btw.

PS.  Unless you live in one of them, in which case you can only claim free drink.

  • D6fer said on Nov 07, 2008....
hey....we had one of those show up at work last month.....ugly!.......you know what I hate? Praying Mantis! I know they are beneficial.....but cripes those things are spooky! Especially if they get on you! We get June bugs here.....they come in July though.....that make no sense.....I hate them too!
  • one_wired_kitty said on Nov 07, 2008....
I was one of those kids who would grab a stick and poke at "almost" anything ... usually chased other girls with it ... HA ... 'cept these and spiders.
  • pusscat said on Nov 08, 2008....
Aaaw - that is a cute one wired_kitty!  He has a face kind of like a little mole scurrying about.  How comes all you guys out there don't like these little critters?  Look at those cute little eyes.
  • RollingC said on Nov 08, 2008....
You all should actually collect the specimens ..without too much crushing of course, so they can be properly identified...and give them to the dept. of agriculture.  Those boys will come out and eradicate them for you if they're illegal aliens.....
They'll even come in and torch the place for free...no charge !  (heh... just kidding)

But that hairy spider that Tizzygirl put up reminds me of one spider like that...although maybe with a bit more hair...from South America and the bad news is that the little suckers are poisonous.  And extremely fast too.  The only way I could ever kill them was with a spray can.  Make any kind of sudden moves and they .... zip.... disappear from sight...just like that.

sean--I'll have to relocate to a bomb shelter whenever you launch your attack! If I'm ever in your area, I'll just look for the house with the nuclear weapons stashed behind it, and you can give me that beer.

D6--Preying Mantis's don't bother me too much, but I really wouldn't want one inside my house either. Thankfully we do not have June bugs here. Or else I've never seen them!

one_wired--My cats eat those potato bugs and they are disgusting! I wrote a post awhile ago about how my cat dropped one of those nasty critters on my foot. They're evil!

pusscat--I think it's possible you're the only bug lover around these parts. But feel free to come visit us and take all the 'cute' bugs home with you :-) I won't mind, as long as they're out of my house!

Rc--I thought this weird centipede was some sort of alien species since I'd never seen it before. But I guess it's pretty common. I don't know how I escaped seeing one until now! But I'm afraid of all weird spiders, because I just assume they must be poisonous....
  • pusscat said on Nov 08, 2008....
Ha ha!  I wouldn't mind coming over and 'rescuing' them but I don't know if they might try to eat my current house guest - a very large spider that I have named Seigfred (actually, every large spider that enters my house is usually called Seigfred - its a tradition - except the 7 legged one a few years back I named Seigy LOL)
  • Mr_Box said on Nov 08, 2008....
I've never seen a bug like that either. Yuck. If I find one in my house, I'll mail it to you, Pusscat ;-)
  • pusscat said on Nov 08, 2008....
Don't forget to leave little air holes in the parcel Mr Box hee hee ;-)
  • evil_twin said on Nov 08, 2008....
pusscat--If you get any strange packages with air holes arriving from California, they must be from me or Mr. Box! :-P

Mr. Box--I hope you never find one of those in your house either....
  • pusscat said on Nov 08, 2008....
Well - i for one am gonna go and find out what is classed as fine cuisine for bugs and I'm gonna have me the finest 'Ugly Bug Ball' LOL!  (Mind you - fine cuisine for bugs is most likely just more bugs!)

Bet we sure look ugly to them though - i can hear them now, "Jeez - they only got 2 skinny legs!  How'd they manage?", "Nemind the legs, how do they manage with only 2 arms?!".

See what you started here Kyle?!  Ha ha!
  • allswell said on Nov 21, 2008....
