Soft music is playing in the background.  The rhythmic clicking of knitting needles is soothing, almost hypnotic.  It feels good to be creative.

All of a sudden, an explosion of sound disturbs the peaceful atmosphere.

FUCK!

Do knitters say fuck?  If they're me, they do.  If they've ripped out the same set of stitches three freaking times, and have to do it yet again, they do.  Sometimes it's embellished with a few other swear words thrown in for good measure.  I can't make my fingers do what I want them to do.  The yarn's too fine, or the needles are too slippery.  Or my brain isn't firing on all cylinders today.  Whatever.  I'm ready to bend these stupid needles from hell into artful shapes, and hang the yarn on the pointy bits.

It seems incongruous.  Knitting brings to mind peaceful images:  sitting comfortably in a favorite easy chair with a cat purring at your feet, or sharing gossip with a few fellow knitters.  None of these images include bad words.

Ah well.  Try try again.

Fuck.

Ugh...you have my sympathy! I don't have the time or patience for it these days, Mimi, even though I keep telling myself I'll get linebacker's blanket done by Christmas! I'm sure I'd be teaching my kids all kinds of interesting words if I tried most days. ;-)

I can't seem to recreate that cozy homey atmosphere that I have in my brain of a woman knitting either.  More often it's a stand off between me and the needles.  I usually end up muttering curses and incantations as I glare and the pile of yarn and needles.

when you figure it out will you teach me? i don't mind the curse words :)

mimi- I have found that Potty Mouth can take care of so many of life's little problems in such a short period of time - and its free. I rely on its healing qualities frequently.

Oh wow MiMi, that gave me quite a chuckle, and I hope you don't mind.  It kind of sent me on a memory spree ... my grandma used to knit a lot, as did my great grandmother.  It was always so funny to hear my grandma cuss, but it was even more hilarious to hear my great aunt curse ... it was like her speaking this forbidden foreign language and you didn't laugh when she said it either because she was REALLY emphasizing a point ... but boy did we turn blue laughing afterwards!  Anyway, back to the point, so you let out a good hollar every once in a while during knitting, who says ya can't?  Maybe you're really emphasizing a point to that damn yarn that it better cooperate before you stick those needles from hell with their pointy bits somewhere it doesn't want 'em!

Oh mimi you are funny.  I used to knit a lot though not any more.  I think that's probably a wise move as I don't know if my lack of patience would push me over the edge these days LOL!

I say you should get a spare ball of that wool and a similar pair of needles and do some bending and poking anyway just to show it what COULD happen if it don't play nicely ;-)

And just what are you knitting Mimi? It wouldn't happen to be olive green, would it? :)

Infernal, you have a good excuse for not having the time or patience to knit.  How goes the baby-growing business?

Uni, I just always had it in my brain that knitting should be relaxing.  And it is to a certain extent, once you establish a rhythm and learn the pattern.  Small needles take some getting used to.

fraggie, you want to learn to knit... or swear?  LOL

beyond, it's good for releasing frustrations and the evil humors that occur when you're all thumbs.

Hegemone, I'm glad it brought up good memories for you.  I always think of my great-aunt, the one who taught me how to knit.  She was a prickly, opinionated woman, but boy, she could swear and drink like a sailor.  And she had a great laugh.

pc, I threatened the yarn and gave it a stern look, so it's behaving a bit better.  ;)  I was just wondering tonight how you were doing, and here you are!

ss, I decided it was time to get busy with a couple of Christmas gifts.  LOL  Famous last words.  Oh, you and your silly olive green!  :D  No, not green -- a very soft purplish mauve color.

Well maybe I need to knit my self a new cardigan. The one I knitted last spring is a summer one with short sleeves and an open neck. So maybe I will sit down and make one that is thin and warm and can be worn under a coat or inside, even though the houses here are warm.

well I don't even know how to fucking knit, let alone throwing out some goddamn cursing while i am at it mother fucker! what the hell is your problem?

    [hi there meems!]

I feel your pain Mimi.  I don't have the patience to learn to knit with the needles.  However, I do love my lap knitting looms.  I've been working on a project with some furry confetti yarn and realized I had missed a peg somewhere along the line which created a gaping whole.  You guessed it.  The whole thing had to come off the loom and be restarted to fix it.  I think I called it a dirty rat bastard.  :-D

Couldn't have been my fault.  lol

    What are you making?

I'm not "laughing at you" but this made me smile!  Just so darn human!  Take a breather and try again later maybe.  It sounds so much like me trying to do this (I used to crochet) that I think that's why I smiled.

mimi - i was initially referring to learning to knit, but after i stubbed my toe last night and cried out "FLIP FLAP!" & "SON OF A POO!" i decided that i could most definitely use a good course in cursing :)
  • MissMimi said on Nov 07, 2008....
queenie, oh I'll keep trying.  And probably keep using bad words too.  :)

skald, you're such a fabulous knitter ( and fast too! ) -- I always think of you when I knit.

Mamie, well, son of a bitch!  The hell you say!  [hiya, Mamiebaby!]

CDub, I've never gotten the hang of using those furry yarns.  My mother-in-law sent me a skein of eyelash yarn -- funny, I thought she liked me!  You asked what I was making:  http://www.patternworks.com/productdetail/801147.htm

wombie, good heavens, go ahead and laugh.  It is kind of funny.  :)  I haven't picked up a crochet hook in a long time either.

fraggie, you snuck in while I was typing...  ouchie!  That is most definitely swear-worthy.
