I'm not new to voting. At my age I have gone to the polls many times. Sometimes hopeful, sometimes fearful, always with a sense of duty fufilled. The first thing I thought of this morning, the very first thought I had as my eyes opened, was that it was a voting day. That it was a day of possibilities and an historic day. One that my children will never forget, one that I never thought I would see. It is a day that reminds me of my youth, when I was in junior high school, and excited about the election of President Kennedy. It was the first election that I was involved with and I remember the feeling of excitement and change and knowledge that I was a part of American History. And here I am today. Four decades later I awake with the same excitement and the same giddy feeling that I am part of history. This election brought me two things I never thought I would live to see. A woman and a black man running for president. People that in the past would not have even been allowed to vote. I rejoice for my children, for my grandchildren, and for myself. Whatever the outcome, our country will be changed.
