Help! Can I pick your brain about an email problem?

I use Microsoft Outlook (not Express) for my day to day business email. It has developed the quirk of not receiving email. It will send but it won’t receive. Microsoft Word 2003 is my email editor. Saturday is when this problem developed.

This morning I did a system restore back to Friday’s settings when it was working great. That didn’t fix it. I’ve got a ghost in the machine somewhere.

Any ideas on how to start receiving emails again?

that's very peculiar. off the top of my head, i would think that the issue at play here is that your computer's default location for files has gotten messed up. have you made any changes at all to where you keep your e-mail?

I haven't made any changes at all. That's why it is baffling me. I did a system restore and it didn't help. I sent a test message to another email account I have. It went through. My reply did not show up and it did not bounce back to me. I have had no received messages since Friday night. The internet works ok obviously.

I'm thinking there must be a setting switched off somewhere, but for the life of me, I can't find it.

How do i find my default location for files?

    go to file|data file management.

that should bring up a window of a few possible options. most people have only one such location. you can adjust the margins on the message box to see the full path to where your e-mail goes.

so long as that hasn't changed, there shouldn't be an issue.

on second thought, there's another possible change: go into tools|e-mail accounts and select "view or change existing e-mail accounts.

select your e-mail ID and make sure your incoming and outgoing mail server information is correct.

    Normally, when you cant receive mails, you have to delete "received "files from your server. Start from this assumption;

I'm still not having any luck.

I've found a free download at PconPoint.com that says it will fix this type of thing. I've been afraid to download it because i don't know if it's a scam or not. Do you know of any legit sites that do this?

    Thanks for trying to help.

o, that's OK, sus. i'm sure CW will simply nuke all the comments following her last one. she should.

what i really love is anyone so obviously incompetent at communicating in english thinking he/she/it has any basis for taking someone else to task for doing so. obviously, this one was hatched speaking some other language but thinks its skills are actually acceptable.

god but i love this place. :>

CW... I love ya girlfriend...Forgive me for using your post here darlin'...but Kevin, I am sorry. The trauma you must have gone through as a child must have been horrific. I have seen this before and I hear your cries for the need of love , acceptance and attention. I know at night when you lay your head on the pillow, nothing but pain fills your heart. I am sorry for you Kevin and all the hardship you have so obviously endured. I wish you peace.

CW, I would like to help and I normally could but for a couple of issues, one I would have to be on hand to check your settings and do some trouble shooting. Unfortunately we are a few thousand miles apart. Secondly I do not use Outlook as my preferred email client, but I have just played around with it to see if I can come out with something. So let's give it a try.

Open Outlook and click on Tools then E-mail Accounts then select View or change existing e-mail accounts and click Next. Double click on the account that you use then confirm that the name of the "Incoming mail server (POP3)" is correct. Though I do no see how this could have been changed without your knowledge, but then we can never be sure.

Next click on Test Account Settings ... and wait for the reported message. If everything comes out clean, then you may have a server side problem. Please contact your provider and tell them your problem.

Could it have been possible that someone or yourself may have inadvertently reset or create a rule for your incoming mail and redirect then to another folder or to another address. Click on Tools then Rules and Alerts ... to check this out.

Of course there is also the possibility that someone may have hacked into your account using a stolen password and downloaded your messages. In any case have your password reset immediately.

Final test is to see whether you can use another PC to download your messages using Outlook with the same settings.

By now, we would have a very clear idea on just what has happened and on precisely how to rectify the issue.

    Regards,
    GM

I've blocked our little troll friend from posting on my blog again. I've decided to leave the posts he made for now so if the powers that be at Soul Cast ever monitor blogs, they can see what an ass he is to the community.

    GMNIMan,

Thank you. I tried what you suggested. Everything was as it should be. I ended up calling my internet service provider this morning and as luck would have it, the problem in on their end. Thank heaven! Now I just have to wait while they work on it. They were flooded with calls this morning. I wasn't their only baffled customer.

All my frustration was for naught. It's too bad these things always happen on the weekend.

you know, that's a mighty odd problem for an ISP. but glad to hear it's gonna be all sorted out. :>

I don't like any of the Microsoft programs for handling mail in general. You might like to go to http://www.eudora.com and download their free program. It's always worked well for me, for years. You can find your attachments in a separate file, too.
  • CreativeWoman said on Aug 21, 2006....
The person I talked to with my ISP said it was a system wide problem. She told me what my problem was before I could tell her. She said the phone had been ringing off of the hook. She didn't say what the problem was, but that it is was being worked on. It must be something major because it's been 8 hours since I called and I still can't receive email.

I've been using this ISP for about 6 years and it's the first time anything like this has happened.

  • GMNIMan said on Aug 21, 2006....
The way I see, it is most likely that your ISP had a hardware failure of some sort, probably the HD drive, losing sectors and dropping data.

They should be able to get your account up and running in no time, but I am afraid that your missing messages would surely be lost forever.
  • Bordy said on Aug 21, 2006....
Yah, I've tried Eudora in the past (but my computer illiterate boss' wife decided we must all use outlook, because they are the same and our emails would work better....?)

Anyway, I am a big fan of Mozilla Thunderbird, which works just like Outlook really, but, in the spirit of everything Mozilla, is far superior to Microsoft. I can't even explain why, it must be a natural anomaly.
  • silverwhisper said on Aug 22, 2006....
bordy: she's probably thinking about enabling HTML e-mail. my bet is that's a feature in thunderbird.

  • Susmaryosep said on Aug 22, 2006....
i also use Thunderbird, but I know nothing about it...... :-)
  • CreativeWoman said on Aug 22, 2006....
My email is finally working again. I don't know what the problem with the ISP actually was, but they fixed it.

Thank you all for the alternate suggestions on programs to use. I will be checking them out.
