if you didn't see it, the google logo today is particularly spiffy, i thought. :>

so how've you guys been? i miss you and am sorry i haven't been around. still having connectivity issues and work's been keeping me busy--although i was in what might be the funniest darned departmental meeting ever the other day.

my employer is very serious about making sure you don't stay late. one of the biggest adjustments i've had to make is not coming in early or staying late: they really frown on that. me, i've always done both, my entire career.

well, my manager called a meeting to tell us that as of now, this is an actionable offense. yes, this means that by working too much, you can be fired.

the first thing i told my colleague that flashed through my head while leaving the meeting was "jeez, how would i tell my friends about that?"

but of course, what i really thought first was "jeez, i gotta put up a blog entry about this--nobody's gonna freaking believe it!"

anyway: happy halloween, guys!

    hey looka who's here!

we don't do halloween hereabouts (you know that about me of course), but i could greet you happy all saints' day and all souls' day instead.

hhmmm. you work in a weird office. actionable offense, huh? if this happened in my line of work, i'd probably bring this up to the top bosses and assert my right to work beyond the call of duty. no kidding.

it's good to read you again, friend... :-)

What a nice surprise this morning! :)

    ((massive -- lumpy -- hugs, Infernal-style))

Happy Halloween, my friend. That is so bizarre that you can get in trouble for working TOO much...but I guess at least you have an excuse to make sure you disentangle on time and go home!

Ed- Well, my mouth dropped open when I saw your post. Good to see you mrsilver.

I think your manager is from another planet.

Don't forget us, its a different place without you here.

That is weird about a company being tough on free work.  (I assume you're salary)  It absolutely is the norm even here where work life is pretty cushy.

Happy Halloween. I have been wondering about you. I don't like this, not being able to work early or late.

Well, you know, Ed, SoulCast has a new rule.  Too little blogging is now an actionable offense.  Just saying...

    Nice to see you, young man.  {{{{hugs}}}}

You know I quite jealous of your job restriction/perk! If only my hubby's company would have such a policy.

Ed.....at my office they do the same....my boss goes around from desk to desk to reminds us that its time to go home.....we don't dare staying one minute more...lol....

I used to pile up so much overtime with them until 2 months ago....then the Indians took over and now its all...go, go go home...but still...some days they still beg us to work one hour late.....

Anyway.....Happy wicked night, dear Ed.....hope you stay happy and safe...:-)

What a strange office you work at!! It is sooo nice to see you Ed.. and Happy Halloween!!     :-)
  • RollingC said on Oct 31, 2008....
At my job the only time they will pay overtime is when your relief doesn't show up for some reason.  They don't like us hanging around after our shift is over but if we do then it's for free. And yep...they make a big deal about  working extra without proper authorization.
I think they're afraid of possible lawsuits.  I heard a story that the company I'm working for used to have mickey mouse insurance policies and they rarely made the effort to offer it to employees....until something happened in one building and someone organized the workers...put in a class action suit which the company lost....and they wound up paying a bundle.
So much so that now every employee has free medical and pays peanuts for dental Insurance.

Thats about the best work procedure I could think of.  So essentialy they're saying to you don't finish all your work just go home? maybe not I have a feeling there would be more pressure to complete within deadlines no?

Happy halloween Ed good to see you!

infernal: oof! :> hi there, good to see you again! i trust your pregnancy is going uneventfully? :>

    beyond: but it's not just my manager--apparently it's company-wide! isn't that peculiar? :> and no, i haven't forgotten about you guys. :>

u-i: and to you! yeah, i don't quite get it, but hey, if them's the rules i guess i can quell my contrary nature in this instance... :>

skald: well, here i am! :> it's a bit weird for me, not sure what that's about. i did hear a story but i'm not sure i quite buy it.

mimi: [trout-smack!] good to see you too! :D

CW: now now, i always take the things you tell me to heart! :>

hegemone: hi there, welcome to my blog & thanks for visiting! nah, i'm salaried. it's just a wacky place to be! i dig your username, btw. :>

ex: breaks are actually scheduled and they get irritable if you don't take your full, allotted time. :> and thanks, i plan to try to do so. :>

    grape: gah! [is scared]

pariscult: felt somewhat emphatic about that, huh? :>

fragglesrock: good to see you again!

link1: welcome to my blog! hm...well, halloween is, after all, a fun holiday. although i don't think i've heard anyone say "happy memorial day", to be honest.

vm: good to see you again! honestly, i think it would be interesting if more companies did have such policies. some years ago i saw a survey that indicated collectively, americans work the most hours of any nation's employees per person?

GS: ah, good, someone else deals with this situation! isn't it odd? i mean, to me, professionalism always meant staying until the job is done but now...?! and thanks, i hope you had a good, wicked night yourself. :>

diabolic: ain't it just?! good to see you again too, diabolic! :>

rollingc: you know, given the story i heard, i wouldn't be at all surprised if what you said was exactly the case there...it sounds like they didn't used to have HR people with a brain in their heads! and it's nice to see you too, man. :>

tobi-lee: funny thing about the place i work, it's really not very deadline-oriented. the work is generally at a constant flow and doesn't usually lend itself to that kind of thing. it's hard to explain, to be honest.

lionesss: hey there, good to see you again!

sheltercrow: what happened there, compose/edit HTML mode issue?

I don't profess to be an HTML expert so I have no answer really.

Hum... It worked on my blog but doesn't have the better appearance of the springwidgets. And springwidgets doesn't accept the site url here.

This is all you get when it's placed in the HTML window

  • silverwhisper said on Nov 02, 2008....
infernal: i'm glad to hear it. :> and yes, we did, thank you, my friend. :>

sheltercrow: funny, considering how much HTML you seem to use in your comments, i'm surprised by that, to be honest. ah, well...
