Arminius doctrine was rejected as heresy by the Synod of Dordrecht, 1618-19. The reason for this is because Arminius twisted the scriptures in a very subtle way by putting the emphasis of salvation on man and his contribution to his salvation rather than on God and his free gift of grace. This is a heresy because in the same way that Satan rejected the supremacy of God by exerting self will to want to be like God and have dominion above the stars of heaven so do these man made little gods cults who adhere to humanistic doctrines, want to exert their self will and exalt themselves above the word of God.

Isaiah 14-12-15

How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!
For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:
I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.
Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.

One of the favorite scriptures of those who hold to Arminius doctrine that they use to prove that man has a will in his own salvation, is the story of Joshua son of Nun. Let us on closer examination of this story look to see what is really being said. If you will notice the Lord points out that Joshua and Caleb have a different Spirit in them than that of the evil congregation.

Joshua 14:24-30

But my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and hath followed me fully, him will I bring into the land whereinto he went; and his seed shall possess it. (Now the Amalekites and the Canaanites dwelt in the valley.) To morrow turn you, and get you into the wilderness by the way of the Red sea.
And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying,
How long shall I bear with this evil congregation, which murmur against me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against me.
Say unto them, As truly as I live, saith the LORD, as ye have spoken in mine ears, so will I do to you:
Your carcases shall fall in this wilderness; and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, which have murmured against me,
Doubtless ye shall not come into the land, concerning which I sware to make you dwell therein, save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun

The Hebrew word ruach for spirit is wind or breath. We know from the book of Acts that the Holy Spirit manifests as wind. So,it is obvious that the different Spirit that these two men had was the anointing of the holy Spirit. Joshua and Caleb represent as a shadow to come, those who by the empowerment of the Spirit of God can do great and mighty exploits. They do not fear man but boldly proclaim Gods provision, might and power, despite the difficult circumstances!

Joshua 14:13,14

And Joshua blessed him, and gave unto Caleb the son of Jephunneh Hebron for an inheritance.
Hebron therefore became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite unto this day, because that he wholly followed the LORD God of Israel.

Here we see the Lord blessing his own works. The power of the holy Spirit was upon Joshua and Caleb empowering them to do the work that God required and then he rewards them an inheritance based on obedience in taking part in that work. This is grace in action! Not the work of man!

Now notice what happens when the evil congregation decides to go and do the work. Does God reward them? On the contrary...they go in their own strength and power and are defeated by the enemy.

Joshua 14:40-45

And they rose up early in the morning, and gat them up into the top of the mountain, saying, Lo, we be here, and will go up unto the place which the LORD hath promised: for we have sinned.
And Moses said, Wherefore now do ye transgress the commandment of the LORD? but it shall not prosper.
Go not up, for the LORD is not among you; that ye be not smitten before your enemies.
For the Amalekites and the Canaanites are there before you, and ye shall fall by the sword: because ye are turned away from the LORD, therefore the LORD will not be with you.
But they presumed to go up unto the hill top: nevertheless the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and Moses, departed not out of the camp.
Then the Amalekites came down, and the Canaanites which dwelt in that hill, and smote them, and discomfited them, even unto Hormah

So if Joshua has the anointing of the holy Spirit to do Gods work in the same way as Samson, David, Moses, Elijah, ect. then why do we presumptuously work to please God in our own efforts? God anointed and commissioned Joshua to do a work and he empowered him to do it. Joshua was an ordinary man like any other man but the difference was that he had Gods Spirit on him. God was with him and all he did was successful. Wherein lies Joshua's own works? There are none.

By contrast we can see that the evil congregation who even though they saw Gods miracles performed by Moses, still did not believe. In fact Jesus said that even if people saw someone raised from the dead they would not believe. Now why is that? It is because without God we can do nothing. Not able to believe in God or save ourself either. Absolutely nothing can we do in our own power and might that would please God. All our works are as filthy rags no matter how commendable they look to man because in there somewhere is a wrong motive. To be seen of men perhaps? Money ? False humility and spiritual pride? Whatever it may be, without the anointing of the holy Spirit on your works they are worth nothing in the sight of God

Joshua 1:1-11

Now after the death of Moses the servant of the LORD it came to pass, that the LORD spake unto Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ minister, saying,
Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, thou, and all this people, unto the land which I do give to them, even to the children of Israel.
Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, that have I given unto you, as I said unto Moses.
From the wilderness and this Lebanon even unto the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and unto the great sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your coast.
There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.

Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give them. Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper whithersoever thou goest. This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.
Then Joshua commanded the officers of the people, saying, Pass through the host, and command the people, saying, Prepare you victuals; for within three days ye shall pass over this Jordan, to go in to possess the land, which the LORD your God giveth you to possess it.

Obedience to the law is the requirement for success and that being impossible, success looks highly unlikely. When the people were led by the Spirit through Moses and Joshua then they were successful but when the people chose their own way they failed. Our choices always end in disaster and this is what the lord tries repeatedly to show us in his word!

Isaiah 55; 6-11

Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near:
Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.
For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD.
For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.
For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater: So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.

Now lets go to Joshua Chapter 24, where Joshua warns the Isrealites that God is hard to please for he is a jealous God. Joshua reminds the people that God gave them the promised land (which is a shadow of our inheritance in Christ) as a gift to them. A gift that he emphasizes to the Isrealites, that they did not labour for nor did they deserve. Then Joshua says to them, serve the lord because he has done great things for you. His salvation is so undeserving and we as unbelieving sinners are so not worthy of Gods gift of grace. The people say, we will serve the Lord but do they really.....no we can see from history that they did not. They were still in the sinful carnal unbelieving nature and unable in their own efforts to please God or keep his law. Joshua warned them. He said YOU CANNOT SERVE THE LORD....it is too difficult for you in your own power. The evil congregation of course said that they were able to serve the Lord. So, they chose to be under the law. They swore to serve God in their own power. God set up that stone as a reminder of how foolish it is to try to serve God in our own ability!

Jeremiah 23;29

Is not my word like as a fire? saith the LORD; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces?

Joshua could choose by the Holy Spirit to do what was the holy Spirit enabled him to do but the Isrealites could not choose good of their own volition and tried in vain to keep their promise. So what does that show you about mans choices? I think that I will let the Lord order my steps and trust him to make the choices for my life.

Joshua 24

And ye went over Jordan, and came unto Jericho: and the men of Jericho fought against you, the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Girgashites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites; and I delivered them into your hand.
And I sent the hornet before you, which drave them out from before you, even the two kings of the Amorites; but not with thy sword, nor with thy bow.
And I have given you a land for which ye did not labour, and cities which ye built not, and ye dwell in them; of the vineyards and oliveyards which ye planted not do ye eat.
Now therefore fear the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the LORD.
15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.
And the people answered and said, God forbid that we should forsake the LORD, to serve other gods;
For the LORD our God, he it is that brought us up and our fathers out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage, and which did those great signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way wherein we went, and among all the people through whom we passed:
And the LORD drave out from before us all the people, even the Amorites which dwelt in the land: therefore will we also serve the LORD; for he is our God.
And Joshua said unto the people, Ye cannot serve the LORD: for he is an holy God; he is a jealous God; he will not forgive your transgressions nor your sins.

If ye forsake the LORD, and serve strange gods, then he will turn and do you hurt, and consume you, after that he hath done you good.
And the people said unto Joshua, Nay; but we will serve the LORD.
And Joshua said unto the people, Ye are witnesses against yourselves that ye have chosen you the LORD, to serve him. And they said, We are witnesses.
Now therefore put away, said he, the strange gods which are among you, and incline your heart unto the LORD God of Israel.
And the people said unto Joshua, The LORD our God will we serve, and his voice will we obey.
So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and set them a statute and an ordinance in Shechem.
And Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God, and took a great stone, and set it up there under an oak, that was by the sanctuary of the LORD.
And Joshua said unto all the people, Behold, this stone shall be a witness unto us; for it hath heard all the words of the LORD which he spake unto us: it shall be therefore a witness unto you, lest ye deny your God.
So Joshua let the people depart, every man unto his inheritance.
And it came to pass after these things, that Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died, being an hundred and ten years old.
30 And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnath-serah, which is in mount Ephraim, on the north side of the hill of Gaash.
And Israel served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that overlived Joshua, and which had known all the works of the LORD, that he had done for Israel.
And the bones of Joseph, which the children of Israel brought up out of Egypt, buried they in Shechem, in a parcel of ground which Jacob bought of the sons of Hamor the father of Shechem for an hundred pieces of silver: and it became the inheritance of the children of Joseph.

Joshua who had a different spirit (Gods holy Spirit) remember, could say with all boldness...as for me amid my house we will serve the lord. This was indeed true! Joshua could serve the lord because he was chosen, set apart sanctified as holy unto the lord and anointed with the holy Spirit!

The evil congregation had a covenant under the law with Jehovah ......And the people said unto Joshua, The LORD our God will we serve, and his voice will we obey. So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and set them a statute and an ordinance in Shechem This goes to show you that as Paul said...no one can keep the law. Did Israel keep the law? No they never did! They broke it at every turn and so will anyone who seeks to be justified by the law. It is hard to obey God and meet his standards as Joshua warned. What happened to Joshua son of Nun filled with the power of the holy Spirit? He received his inheritance in the Lord by being that chosen vessel not of works but from him who calleth.

Zec. 4;6

Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the LORD unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.

Romans 8:8-14

So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.
But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you. Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
