Unanimous decisions for: Pete Drago Sell over Josh Burkman. Hermes Franca over his teacher Marcus Aurelio. Dan Miller of Renzo's NYC class over smelly Matt Horwich. Sean Muscle Shark Sherk over fellow wrestler Tyson Griffin. Gray Maynard over Rich No Love Clementi. Thiago Alves over late replacement Josh Koscheck.
Submission hold victories. Spencer Fisher triangle chokes Shannon Gugerty in third. Thales Leites rear naked chokes slugger Drew McFedries in about a minute of round one.
Punchout. Junior Dos Santos TKOs Fabricio Werdum with punches in a minute and change of the first round, just a damn beating.
Injury. Anderson Silva wins a stoppage when Patrick Cote's knee goes out and he can't continue. Silva was winning the fight on points at the time of the stoppage very early in round three. An unsatisfying finish.
My reaction. First, why is Silva being given easy fights? They should put him in with a good ground fighter like his buddy Paolo Filho or Matt Lindland or Frank Trigg or Jaquerie, or even the guy who beat Jaquerie, Gegard Mousasi, or against interesting kicker Cung Le. I'd even want them to dust off the ancient Rickson Gracie, in whatever shape he's in, to fight Anderson Silva and test him on the ground. Travis friggin Lutter almost had Anderson Silva out. Why are they feeding Anderson Silva meatballs? James Irvin and Patrick Cote. Come on. If there is a way to make Anderson Silva fights boring, they've found it. Everyone knew that Cote didn't stand a chance. Even Cote's own mother bet $10,000 on Silva. This is not Monday Morning quarterbacking. I said before the James Irvin fight and the Cote fight that the matchup was a joke. It's actually poetic justice that the Silva vs. Cote fight turned out to be extremely disappointing. It was a shitty matchup. And that's your headliner on a pay per view offering?
The shocker was that highly ranked Fabricio Werdum got his ass handed to him by unfamiliar Junior Dos Santos, prompting people to wonder who the hell this guy is to take out a top ten heavyweight so decisively and quickly. His height and weight are missing on Sherdog, and his birthday is listed as 0/0/00. Before kicking Werdum's ass, his prior victory was over Geronimo Dos Santos. Who's that, his brother? His father? His mother? I wonder if he's related to the Dos Santos girl who works in my office directly across the hall from me. Besides "Junior" he has the nickname "Gypsy" in Portuguese, which is "Cigano". He fights in Brazil of course. Maybe he was a homeless kid in Rio like so many others.
Tyson Griffin was stopped by a gatekeeper, Sean Sherk, who has only 3 losses on his record, to the best of the best, GSP, BJ Penn, and Matt Hughes in his prime 5 years ago. Aside from the very best in the world, Sherk is unbeatable, and Griffin couldn't get past him.
The Miller Brothers of New York City, Dan and Jim, are interesting guys to root for. It's so cool that if you are in the NYC vicinity and you join Renzo Gracie's school, you will have the opportunity to make a living at MMA if you are really good at it. Look at Matt Serra. Now he's a big shot in MMA with a school of his own.
Thiago Alves's last three fights were wins over Matt Hughes, Karo Parisyan, and now Josh Koscheck. Not too shabby. He lost in the past to Spencer Fisher, but then again, Spider Silva lost in the past too, so maybe he improved. He also lost to Jon Fitch, so I guess he deserves to be the number three welterweight in the world now, behind GSP and Fitch. What is there for him to do but fight Fitch or Fisher again or GSP.
Drew McFedries is a disappointment, but only because he raised our hopes in the first place. He hits so damn hard that he's interesting, but then he gets whupped by good ground fighters.
