Is Roatan a good place for Democrats?

The fact is, if you're not looking for the basic creature comforts of home, Roatan may be just the place for you. I wouldn't knock it as a nice place to visit, but I sure wouldn't want to live here.

First off it's hot, miserably hot, and humid too.  Realtors and property managers will talk up the ocean breezes and the bedroom AC units.  Don't fall for it.
Would you be comfortable in a home in Florida or Texas with a couple of bedroom AC units. Would you ever dream of living any place hot in the summer months with no AC? Of course not and it's no different here. Trust me on this, when you have the wall units down as low as they can go, and your house is still 98 to 102 degrees, you're going to want to beat that trusty realtor with a tire iron.
Don't think you can escape the heat with home that has real AC like you would find in the states, you won't.

For those looking to escape the Big Brother, police state, political environment of the US, I strongly urge you look else where for a new home.  There are several message boards for Roatan and they are all censored.  They will not print any opinion or truth, they feel may hurt the value of their real estate investments.

The majority of those currently moving to Roatan are not looking to escape that environment, they're looking to expand it. Roatan is a haven for Bush, Mc Cain, Palen conservatives that believe it is necessary for their safety that you trade your freedom for a police state. They idolize a president that calls the constitution nothing but a piece of paper and they believe a preemptive strike is not the same as an invasion or attack on another country.

Re: Roatan a good place for Republicans:

Pack your things Roatan is the perfect place for you!
The mosquitos are fewer in the areas you'll be living, and if for some reason you were to cross paths with a few you could always spray yourself with a little Off insect repellant.  Pay a little more for a home that's been insulated and wired for a generator and you're good to go. No worries about the heat, you can afford a beautiful home with the extra income you earn as a realtor. For Christians with small children, I would highly recommend Roatan, it's perfect for you. There are many churches.

Re Power outages and Democrats in Roatan:

Below I've listed three popular Roatan realtor lies

1. Since the new owner purchased the power company, the power hardly ever goes out anymore.
2  If the power does go out, it's only for a few minutes.
3. We haven't had a power outage in over a month!

In truth the power outages are weekly occurrences, sometimes a few times a week.
The outages are usually between one and eight hours long. The average outage being between two and five hours.  Having air conditioning doesn't do you any good without power and without air conditioning at 100 degrees inside your home, you're wishing you were anywhere but Roatan.

At this point you're thinking the dreamy looking hammock you saw in all the pictures of Roatan before you moved here is looking pretty darned good. Think again.
It's still hot as a fire cracker outside too. The ocean breeze (if there is one) that everyone bragged about is warm and hardly inviting, however you'll be to busy to notice the breeze (or lack there of) because you'll be coating your self in DEET. You were told (probably by your realtor) that using DEET was safe and it would repel the mosquitos. What you weren't told is that there are millions of mosquitos all over Roatan and many of them have built up an immunity to DEET. Think malaria.
And while you're anguishing over wether to be outside on your dreamy looking hammock, being eaten alive by mosquitos and sand flies, or being inside suffering heat stroke, that tire iron and beating your realtor comes to mind again.

Re: Cost of Living in Roatan for Democrats:

Roatan is expensive. Supplies are shipped from the mainland and shipping costs money.
Shipping from the states is even more expensive with additional costs.
Grocery's are very high unless you're prepared to live on beans and rice. You can count on paying nearly five bucks for a box of Triscuts.
House help is more expensive than most other area's south of the border. A maid will run you between fifteen and twenty dollars a day for a five hour work day and don't expect her to speak English.
Electric (when you have it) is very expensive, between two and five hundred a month for a two bedroom home. There is no set rate for electric usage, some months are higher than others depending on what the power company chooses to charge you that month.
There are also constant power surges that spin your meter and add a lot to your power bill. These surges also make it necessary to replace electronics and appliances often.

Re: Cost of Living in Roatan for Republicans:

Cost of living is very reasonable. Hire a crippled maid. You can work her just as hard and refuse to pay her as much because she's crippled. Make her learn English.
Have her cook beens and rice. When you have guests visit your tropical paradise, tell them they are eating beans and rice every night because it's traditional Caribbean island food. Your guests will be impressed at how cultured you've become.  Scream at the utility company about the power surges. Write letters to the local government and threaten to move from Roatan, make sure and tell them you will take your money with you. Do not eat Triscuts.

Re: Democrats Bringing pets to Roatan:

If you are a dog lover this is not the place for you. Dog fighting and cock fighting are the cultural norm amongst the native Garifino (black) population.
It is not un common to see them badly injuring street dogs by beating, stoning, and kicking them.  I've witnessed it many times.

Bringing a pet here is flat out cruel, especially if it's an indoor dog. When they aren't battling tics, fleas and worms they battle the heat. You can't depend on the power and if you're in town when it goes out, it won't be long before your dog suffers heat stroke and possibly dies locked in your home.  Bringing them with you in the car is no better. You can't leave them locked in a car because of the heat. Even with the windows down it's to hot for them and many have been stolen. It is not un commend for people to poison dogs in Roatan and there are many varieties of tropical plants that if ingested will kill them.

Re: Republicans Bringing Pets To Roatan:

You guys are far more laid back. You voted twice for a man who picked a vice president, who shot his friend in the face, while shooting at birds with no wings.  You won't let things like animal abuse bother you. Besides, you'll rarely see the local natives abuse animals because you wouldn't purchase a home anywhere near where you may have to come in contact with the local native population. That would be yucky.
As for your own dog, you wouldn't waste your money having it moved down here, when it's far easier to have it put to sleep.

Re: Democrats and Language Barriers in Roatan:

Everyone will tell you the primary language in Roatan is English and maybe it is, however the people working the service industry here are primarily Hispanic and therefor Spanish speaking. This is true of police, pharmacists, bankers and most doctors as well. While it is possible to maneuver Roatan without any knowledge of the Spanish language, it can be very frustrating and difficult at times. I would highly recommend learning Spanish if one were considering a move here.

Re: Republicans and Language Barriers in Roatan:

The primary language in Roatan is English.  On the rare occasion you run across anyone speaking Spanish demand they speak English in your presence, after all you are paying the heathens to serve you and Spanish is a stupid language anyway. If they refuse, stamp your feet and tell them you are going to tell the US government that they need the same lesson in democracy, that Iraq got.  They'll learn English real fast.

Re: Democrats and shopping in Roatan:

There are three grocery stores on the island. Between all three you should be able to find your basic comfort items like coffee creamer, tea bags, diet coke, chip dip, pickles, pop corn and so on.
Before you buy any meats smell them to make sure they aren't rancid. Buying meat that didn't smell bad was difficult until someone opened a couple deli type stores on the island. One is Alba foods in Sandy Bay next to Ed's laundry, on the main highway.
The other which is much larger, is in French Harbor in the same complex as the HSBC bank.
Buying fresh vegetables is still difficult unless you do it on Weds day after the supply ships come in. Make sure you wash them thoroughly to kill intestinal parasites.  It is still recommend you worm yourselves every three months - under a Dr's supervision.

Don't even think about storing any food for emergency's unless you have a generator.  Its very difficult to stock up on anything with the heat and high humidity. Canned goods need to be checked to make sure the heat hasn't damaged the cans. Even things like potato chips and crackers in un opened bags are stale within a few weeks. Bread is often hard by the time it hits the shelves.

Re: Republicans and shopping in Roatan:

Fresh veggies are a joy to look for.  You'll pay through the nose for good meat, but this won't affect you because you'll fight to get the smaller groceries put out of business by bringing in a super store. Skip to next section

Re: Medical Treatment for Democrats in Roatan:

I would not recommend Roatan for anyone with diabetes, heart disease or any other  serious aliment that might require treatment.  People with serious injuries, ailments or conditions have to be flown to the mainland for treatment.  Not good when minutes count. You won't be able to get most American prescriptions filled in Roatan but you can bring up to three months of prescription medications here. Decent pain killers are impossible to find but medications like birth control pills, birth control shots, and Retona are available without a prescription

Re: Medical Treatment for Republicans in Roatan:

Most things can be treated inexpensively right here on the island. A visit to a Dr is very reasonable and will set you back all of fifteen dollars.  For more serious medical conditions or injury's, you're just minutes away from the mainland by plane. You can bring up to three months of prescription medication with you to Roatan. Toilet paper and hemeroid creams can be purchased at many pharmacy's.

Re: Is Roatan Safe for Democrats:

The local police do a very good job. Violent crime such as murder and kidnapping aren't common, but it's still important to be aware of your surroundings.
Keep in mind most people don't go out on the roads after dark here and petty theft is rampant, there are also no street lights. There have been recent reports of home invasions so doors and windows need to be locked. People with residency's may be able to keep a gun at their home for protection, for more information check with local law enforcement.

Re: Is Roatan Safe for Republicans:

The local police are excellent! Violent crime such as murder and kidnapping are rare. Roatan seems to be just as safe as any large U.S.city.  There's a vibrant bar scene in the West End at night and traffic is mild after dark so have fun!

Re: Dangerous Reptiles and Insects in Roatan for Democrats:

Insects of all types are thick in Roatan.  Roatan is home to more mosquitos and sandflys than I've ever seen in my life. Don't forget the scorpions they swear don't exist in Roatan. We found 6 scorpions in our house in one month.

Re: Dangerous Reptiles and Insects in Roatan for Republicans:

Off is easy to use and sold at many stores.

Relax and enjoy.
