So how are the law enforcers of Vancouver pulling it off? By using “bait cars” that how. If that got you scratching your head, just imagine the act of fishing. In order to get a fish, you need to lure it to your direction by using bait. This principle is what the Vancouver police are now using to capture car thieves. Each bait car has a set of hidden interior cameras, vehicle immobilizers and GPS locators. It’s been said that this process has been used by Canada since 2003.
As a result, car theft cases have dramatically decreased to 45 percent since this tactic has been used. And in the greater area of Vancouver, car thefts went down by 61 percent. That’s from a total of 5,320 cases to just a lowly 2,100. And that’s all in five years. Not bad, right?
According to the spokesperson of the Integrated Municipal Provincial Auto Crime Team, Sgt. Gord Elias, the chances of getting back the car has gone pretty high. Once a vehicle is stolen, the police are able to get it back 93 percent of the time. Talk about giving you security and peace of mind. Even other states in Canada are doing well. Ontario and Quebec are said to have car thefts reduced to 50 percent, with only crime syndicates hindering its increase in percentage.
Let’s hope that, aside from Canada, other countries will be able to develop a system similar to this that can help protect their citizens from car thefts.
