Those of you who have read me know that I wear western shirts. Since going into high school I've worn them. They have a very good fit (for wonderfully proportioned guys and girls) ..heh heh.. and just as importantly, they have snaps instead of buttons.

About a month ago I was in a store and ran across some shirts I really liked. The material felt good and was thicker than most for winter wear. They had two pockets with a top flap which is important to me. I love those top pockets. They looked good when I tried them on and the price was killer good also, much cheaper than western.

But they had stupid assed buttons. I hate buttons. I bought eight of them anyway. After wearing them, the buttons are driving me crazy. I'm used to ripping a shirt open at night for bed and easily snapping up in the mornings.

I checked the difference on this.

It takes 1/2 second for me to unsnap, 17 seconds to unbutton.

It takes me 7 seconds to snap up a shirt, 35 seconds to button up.

It takes about 46 minutes a year for me to snap up and take off.

It takes about 5 and 1/4 hours a year to do the same with buttons.

Aside from the time thing, its a pisser to stand and watch yourself fiddle with those buttons day after day.

Then there are the pockets. It takes time to button and unbutton those pockets several times a day. With snaps it takes micro-seconds.

Snaps look much better too. Buttons look like, well, buttons. Snaps almost never come off. Buttons come off so much you need a sewing kit.

I looked on the internet last night and found two places I'm sure sell snaps and a snap setter, so very soon I'll order enough to replace all those stupid buttons with classy snaps.

I can understand why they put buttons on certain things like women's shirts, blouses, and dresses. There are buttons that can set off women's wear. But I don't understand putting any on men's wear. Snaps are so much easier to handle and look so much better than buttons bought on men's shirts. And then there are those button up pants. Who the hell would want that when there are zippers? (ok, zippers are another thing)

Buttons suck.

The buttons gotta go.

Where did they ever get the saying "cute as a button?"

This was funny :-P I have to admit that I hate buttons on shirts too. But I don't wear anything with snaps either. I wear t-shirts almost exclusively. Imagine all the time I save getting dressed and undressed because it only takes me about a half a second to pull a t-shirt on and off!

Besides, it never fails that when I wear a button up shirt, one of the buttons is always missing. That's annoying. And rather than sew on a new button, I usually just throw the shirt in the back of the closet and never wear it again...

LOL, Beyond!  MrP also likes his snapper shirts :-)) and he esp likes it if I unsnap them (hee hee).

I must say, I think getting one of those snapper gagets is a great idea.  I have one and it works a dream :-)

Have fun replacing the buttons with snappers on those eight shirts.  Be careful not to damage the material when removing the buttons! :-)

lol... beyond, I think this is the first rant I've ever seen you post!
  • beyondtheveil said on Oct 12, 2008....
et- I have nothing against t-shirts, in fact I wear them every day (the underwear kind) but I like wearing shirts. I couldn't do without the pockets. My pen, cell phone, wallet, and writing pad goes into those pockets - so handy.

polar- Having never removed buttons before, I have thought about removing them. I have a new hobby knife will try cutting the threads on the top. Those snap setter tools must be difficult to get here. I went to fabric shops and hobby shops and they had none. The net will come through for me again.

kruu- No, dear one, I've ranted before. You must have been in Outer Mongolia testing the toilets or behind the iron curtain trying to get a work visa.

Speaking of Outer Mongolia, are you going to stay with us for a while and rest before attaching your wings again?

And while I'm asking questions, can you vote from where you are for our next highly intelligent, caring, courageous, and distinguished next president? If I'm not mistaken, you'd vote for Nader. I probably would too but I don't think he's on our ballot.

You're digitally challenged aren't you darling... do you wear velcro shoes? LOLOL

Actually my hubby hates buttons too, I hate buttons, they take freaking ages to sew back on again... gives me the shits no end...

Now if you do get this stud kit then how ya gonna deal with the button holes?

BeyBey...i have to admit that the notion of you ripping your shirt open to go to bed is an....ahemm....how shall i put it?.....interesting one.....LOL....

Yes...i agree wit you....snaps are so much easier....

I have mixed feelings about men pants buttons.....definetely zipper are better....
But then.....i think about the slow anticipation building up while having to unbutton those buttons....

Yes, it migth require extra skill and patience...but....in particular situations....it all adds up to create a very nice reaction.....lol...

So......you follow the suggestion of Moon about buying a hobby knife, eh?

beyondce:  I miss the darndest stuff whilst I'm out on toilet inspection duty.  Well, let's see, my next plan is to move to Turkey... still don't know exactly when.  Either shortly after Christmas or next fall.  One reason I haven't been around much is that I'm spending hours each day studying the Turkish language... getting ready for the move.
Yes, I can vote on an absentee ballot, but from what I understand, absentee ballots aren't counted until after the election results are announced anyway (inlcuding those from overseas military personnel), so what's the point?  Anyway, yes, I would vote for Nader.  Why isn't he on your ballot if he's running?  You could always write him in.

Ok, back away from the button down shirt ! haha

I think Beyond has too much time on his hands if he's timing how long it takes to button up a shirt haha.

I don't care, myself buttons or snaps, I'm easy.........just ask the girls! haha

Wow I've never seen such a rant about buttons...but I admire the point.  I don't get along with buttons all of the time...they generally like to pop off and fly across the room for me.  I generally stick with a no button, no snap, no hassle routine if at all possible.  Oh and I totally agree with you on the totally button up pants.  I've never understood the novelty of those.  I received one pair as a gift at one time.  I tried them on once...I had to go to the bathroom badly after a while of wearing them...they are just not fit for bathroom emergencies, as I almost had an accident.  I cannot recall ever having worn them since.  Good luck with your button vs. snaps dilemma!
  • quietone said on Oct 12, 2008....
men...... if it ain't easy...... they want little to nothing to do with it!!! LOL  How many times have you forgotten there were buttons there and just began to "unsnap" the button and it went flying??
  • Lucytorial said on Oct 12, 2008....
Quiet ~ The imagery is rather inticing isn't it?

beyond:  i've never seen a man's shirt with snaps!
we only have buttons or pullovers in jersey.

lucy- I'm definitely digitally challenged which is why I wear boots a lot - slip them on and off. But I don't mind tying my Adidas in the mornings. As for the button holes, I was just going to set the snap over the closed hole. Part of it would show but these aren't dress shirts. However, I don't know what I'm doing either.

ginsoul- I can understand the anticipation part, but if I had to go through that every time I had to pee it would get old quickly. And yea, I got that hobby knife. Already used it too.

kruu- We use that touch screen for voting. I don't know how you could write any one in. I don't believe he got the signatures necessary to get on the ballot in Texas. I'll have to check because I want to do early voting. Will that be Istanbul when you go to turkey?

mobil- You're right. There are periods where I have way too much time on my hands. I actually felt kind of dumb timing myself and making those calculations. I can do strange things amidst boredom.

hegemone- Buttons are definitely out for emergencies. They got me one pair of jeans with buttons when I was a kid. I almost had accidents too. I made certain they never got me another pair of those.

quiet- What I did do was forget one night with my new shirt and tried to 'rip' it off like I was used to. I didn't rip off buttons, but it was close.

secret- I don't know about you - you've never seen a dust storm and now you've never seen snaps. I think it would really be exciting for you out here. First thing I'd do is put you in a western shirt with snaps, boots, and guide you into a dust storm.

I'll give you ten for the boots, I love my boots, comfiest shoes ever... and zippers on jeans are a must, when you need to pee and quickly undoing buttons even for a girl is beyond frustration.

Snaps huh ?   buttons . . .?  What's next  . .  velcro ? Hey beyondtheveil, I like my pockets to . . . with a lid is a plus.   I'm a big guy . . . lots of buttons on my shirts. It seems to take five minutes before I realize things are a little uneven . . . you know what I mean ?
  • beyondtheveil said on Oct 13, 2008....
lucy- Do you have 'cowboy' boots, or some other type. I always wore the cowboy type except to work.

cayenne- Oh man. I did that the other day. I was in the kitchen, looked down, and one side was a few inches longer than the other. I've done that with snaps too, its just easier to correct with snaps.

hehehehe.. what a cute post! cute as a button! lol.. seriously, I can understand your feelings on this one.. I prefer wearing heels or flip flops to sneakers beacuase I hate spending that much time on socks! So I get it.. lets kill the buttons!     ;-)

diabolic- Down with those plastic peons! I'm glad you understand.
