Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday dear  (bomberbutt)
Happy birthday to you.

I'm so sick of that song I could scream.

I've heard it over and over for about eighty years.

I have to listen to it at almost every restaurant I go to.

No one over thirty-nine even wants to be reminded
that its their birthday.

Someone needs to write another song so there can at
least be a variety - (wow...two).

How about this at least for older people...

O say can you see
Any wrinkles on me
If you do, shoot my ass,
and pay the surgeon his fee.

There is another birthday song, my sister's family uses it all the time, it's allot prettier than the traditional song..................
  • wombat said on Oct 09, 2008....
It's a day like the one
    You were born
    If I gave a crap
    I'd blow my horn

    But it's just a day
    like one before
    And even if you care,
    Who care's anymore?

    No one knows time
    And no one knows you
    Just clap for yourself
    And clap for me, too!

    How's that?
  • Twylarants said on Oct 09, 2008....
It's the way people sing it that makes it so damned depressing. It sounds like a funeral dirge. If you try to pick it up a little, everyone glares at you. Is there a rule that says it has to last 30 seconds?
  • gingersoul said on Oct 09, 2008....

    BeyBey.......i couldn't agree more with you.....LOL...
This song stinks!! Bomb this song!!.......:-D

I like it a lot when Marylin sings it though.....;-)

  • beyondtheveil said on Oct 09, 2008....
lucy- You could write a song.

mobil- If you'll teach it to me, maybe I can get it started here.

wombat- I'll take it! Yours is so much better.

twyla- A funeral dirge - now there's a good description. Thirty seconds? Who said it had to last thirty seconds?

ginsoul- Right, bomb this song. I will agree Marilyn sang it better than anyone I ever heard.
  • gingersoul said on Oct 09, 2008....
Oh, but you didn't hear me singing it in Italian yet.......;-P

    Then you would bomb me.....lol...
  • beyondtheveil said on Oct 09, 2008....
ginsoul- I hope Italy has a better birthday song than ours - surely they do.

Hey, I have an idea. Give a performance by camcorder and put it on youtube and route it to us. And wear your black boots.
  • gingersoul said on Oct 09, 2008....
BeyBey....oh, man.....with my black boots too?? You really want me napalm-ed ....lol..

And no, we don't have a better song because, .sad but true, we sing the same song...but in Italian....how so un-imaginative is this?...lol..

Buon Compleanno a te, Buon Compleanno a te.....:-).
  • Lucytorial said on Oct 09, 2008....
    Please

    don't

    I'm going to

    Kill myself......

    LOL
  • Fallyn said on Oct 09, 2008....
actually any restaurants that are using it are doing so illegally.
....most restaurants i've been to make up their own so they don't have to pay the royalties.......YES there ARE royalties on the birthday song.

my dad is in a barbershop group....they do like singing valentines and such......they had to make up their own birthday song cause of the royalty thing on the birthday song.

  • silver_phoenix said on Oct 09, 2008....
beyond- maybe YOU should write a brand spankin new song! ;-P
  • beyondtheveil said on Oct 09, 2008....
fallyn- Royalties? Someone actually owns that song?

  • destinydiva said on Oct 10, 2008....

Paper's b'day song is beautiful, Des. Yeah, do that link thing. I can't do that.
  • Twylarants said on Oct 10, 2008....
Beyond~ I exaggerated, but only by 12 seconds. I read somewhere that it takes 18 seconds, on average, to sing "Happy Birthday". They didn't mean one person singing it, they were talking about a typical group of people at a typical birthday party.
18 seconds, coincidentally, is the amount of time doctors recommend we wash our hands after using the restroom.
So, for better hygiene, sing Happy Birthday to yourself after you pee.

    dude is it your birthday????
  • beyondtheveil said on Oct 10, 2008....
phoenix- If I had the talent, I'd write three or four.

des- Nope. Not my birthday. But when it comes I'll sure hear that song again.

    skald- Thanks again.

twyla- Ha ha, you're so funny. By all means, I'll be sure to do that.

queenie- Nope. Another few months for that (thankfully)
  • PAPERBACKWRITER said on Oct 10, 2008....

Oh thanks des, Twy for singing out my name *giggle*  (btw, des... to answer your query - sorry, rather belatedly! -  in Twy´s birthday blog... the boy in the youtube is sadly not my son, but I would like to record the girls singing the same song, and perhaps post it in the future :) )

What about the birthday song below, dear beyond?  It is  written by Rolf Zuckowski, a famous composer here in Hamburg.  German children grow up with this song, and I even heard some adults still get this song, sung to them by their mothers.

They have a funny way with their toillette design, but Germans know their music, don´t you think? :)

Wie schön, dass du geboren bist

Text & Musik: Rolf Zuckowski - Text ergänzt von Ursula Dümmer

    Heute kann es regnen,
    stürmen oder schnei'n,
    denn du strahlst ja selber
    wie der Sonnenschein.
    Heut ist dein Geburtstag,
    darum feiern wir,
    alle deine Freunde,
       freuen sich mit dir.

    Refrain:
Wie schön, dass du geboren bist,
wir hätten dich sonst sehr vermisst.
wie schön, dass wir beisammen sind,
       wir gratulieren dir, Geburtstagskind!

    Uns're guten Wünsche
    haben ihren Grund:
    Bitte bleib noch lange
    glücklich und gesund.
    Dich so froh zu sehen,
    ist was uns gefällt,
    Tränen gibt es schon
       genug auf dieser Welt.

    Refrain:
Wie schön, dass du geboren bist,
       wir hätten dich...

    Montag, Dienstag, Mittwoch,
    das ist ganz egal,
    dein Geburtstag kommt im Jahr
    doch nur einmal.
    Darum lass uns feiern,
    dass die Schwarte kracht,
    Heute wird getanzt,
       gesungen und gelacht.

    Refrain:
Wie schön, dass du geboren bist,
       wir hätten dich...

    Wieder ein Jahr älter,
    nimm es nicht so schwer,
    denn am Älterwerden
    änderst du nichts mehr.
    Zähle deine Jahre
    und denk' stets daran:
    Sie sind wie ein Schatz,
       den dir keiner nehmen kann.

    Refrain:
Wie schön, dass du geboren bist,
wir hätten dich sonst sehr vermisst.
wie schön, dass wir beisammen sind,
       wir gratulieren dir, Geburtstagskind!

Literal, prose translation of the German lyrics

    Today it can rain,
    storm or snow,
    because you yourself are beaming
    like sunshine.
    Today is your birthday,
    that's why we're celebrating.
    All your friends,
       are happy for you.

    Refrain:
How nice that you were born,
we would have really missed you otherwise.
       how nice that we're all together;
       we congratulate you, birthday child!

    Our good wishes
    have their purpose (reason):
    Please stay long
    happy and healthy.
    Seeing you so happy,
    is what we like.
    There are tears
       enough in this world.

    Refrain:
How nice that you were born,
       we would have...

    Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday,
    that doesn't really matter,
    but your birthday comes only
    once a year.
    So let us celebrate,
    until we're exhausted,*
    Today there's dancing,
       singing and laughter.

    Refrain:
How nice that you were born,
       we would have...

    Another year older,
(but) don't take it so hard,
because when it comes to aging
    you can't change anything anymore.
    Count your years
    and always remember:
    They are a treasure,
that no one can take from you.

    Refrain:
How nice that you were born,
we would have really missed you otherwise.
       how nice that we're all together;
       we congratulate you, birthday child!

*German idiom: "arbeiten, dass die Schwarte kracht" = "to work until one drops, lit., "to work until the rind cracks"

I found the song, but you can't take it from the youtube site. It's kinda silly, little kids singing it beyond, but it's the birthday song my sister and her kids have used for a long time. It's by Tom Chapin.............enjoy haha

this ones different...... I like it! hahaha......
  • moonriver said on Oct 10, 2008....
there, beyond my friend. turns out we have many more choices than that inane song you mentioned. (i agree... i swore to myself years ago i will never sing that song again, whoever's birthday it is.)

quiet, i particularly like the one you posted. i think i'll learn to sing it in time for my two brothers' b-days, both forthcoming ... :-) paper, mobil -- yours were touching pieces. ginger -- can you sing that way on my next birthday? ;-)

  • Lucytorial said on Oct 10, 2008....
Just because I think it really needs singing again!

    Once a year we celebrate
With stupid hats and plastic plates
The fact that you were able to make
    Another trip around the sun

And the whole clan gathers round
And gifts and laughter do abound
And we let out a joyful sound
    And sing that stupid song

    Happy birthday!
    Now you're one year older!
    Happy birthday!
    Your life still isn't over!
    Happy birthday!
    You did not accomplish much
But you didn't die this year
    I guess that's good enough

So let's drink to your fading health
And hope you don't remind yourself
The chance of finding fame and wealth
    Decrease with every year

Does it feel like you're doing laps
And eating food and taking naps
    And hoping that someday perhaps
Your life will hold some cheer

    Happy birthday!
What have you done that matters?
    Happy birthday!
    You're starting to get fatter
    Happy birthday!
    It's downhill from now on
    Try not to remind yourself
Your best years are all gone

    If cryogenics were all free
Then you could live like Walt Disney
    And live for all eternity
    Inside a block of ice

But instead your time is set
This is the only life you get
And though it hasn't ended yet
    Sometimes you wish it might

    Happy birthday!
You wish you had more money
    Happy birthday!
Your life's so sad it's funny
    Happy birthday!
How much more can you take?
    But your friends are hungry
So just cut the stupid cake

    Happy birthday!
    Happy birthday!
    Happy birthday, dear...

Skippy, the bush kangaroo, and the b-b-b-b-b-bu-bu-bu- that leads into

There are royalties to pay for Happy Birthday? you kidding me ?
If it's true then someone should tell the world.  What about all the home
parties where that's song is sung all the time ?  Not to mention the restaurants
    and other public places.

while i agree that the happy birthday song can be particularly annoying, especially to those in the food service industry, i know of another song that's more simple minded and inane than that:

For me they usually play The Beatles' "Birthday" - last year my GF bravely carried out the flaming cake in her asbestos suit while my 11 year old son gyrated to the music, performing a spectacular birthday dance for his ol' pop.
