People remember Chris "The Crippler" Leben as the oddest cast member to ever be on an Ultimate Fighter season. But all he did was pee in someone else's bed and throw things around and break things. This season we have Junie Browning, utterly insane, picking random fights with rival cast members.
Junie and his sidekick Shane something decided to get stupid drunk while everyone else was watching tv. Then they both went nuts. They both started picking fights with the others. Junie was the leader, Shane the follower. They'd go up to someone and push him, insult him, act in such a way that it was hard not to retaliate by hitting him. All completely unprovoked. Junie later blamed it on the alcohol and described himself as having a "bad temper". But it wasn't the alcohol or a bad temper, because when Junie was stone cold sober he did the exact same thing, and "temper" has nothing to do with it because it was all unprovoked. He's a nut.
Then he started to cry and bemoan the fact that he expected to be thrown off the show, ruining his chance at quick riches and fame as an MMA star if he wins. People sympathized with him.
He was throwing chairs and things into the pool, just as an act of drunken vandalism, and picking fights. Then another cast member, Krystof Soszinski, who is heavier than Junie, tougher, more experienced, and could easily beat the crap out of him, stood up to him. Junie pushed him. Krystof didn't hit back but he did stick his face into Junie's, and it was obvious that the only thing keeping Krystof from handing out a beating was the fear of being evicted from the show. Junie started complaining that Krystof was a big bully, and if only he were the same size, he'd show him.
I once did a post on Krystof. He was in the funniest MMA fight I ever saw. His opponent was Alex Andrade. Andrade kneed Krystof in the balls. Six times. Finally, for some reason, the ref disqualified Andrade. Apparently it is against the rules to knee your opponent in the balls more than 5 times.
Back to TUF, Krystof decided to throw Junie's clothing into the pool. And he did. Junie demanded to know who had done that. Krystof cheerfully owned up to it. Hmm. Junie asked "Why did you do that?". Then a minute later, after Junie had recovered his clothing, Ryan Bader tossed it back in the pool, Junie demanded to know who had done that, and Bader cheerfully owned up to it. Junie went for him but they were broken up.
At one point, Junie threw a bottle at an innocent bystander in the cast and cut his arm. He took another bottle and threatened everyone with it.
Why would anyone be a bully to guys who are really tough? What's it gonna get you? If it ends up in violence, it's gonna get your ass kicked, gonna get you killed. Junie is kookoo for cocoa puffs.
The next day, Dana White showed up at the house to deal with the problem. In past seasons of TUF, Dana White stood up for the integrity of the sport and made speeches about how he worked all his life to give MMA an upstanding and professional reputation, and not allow it to be seen as a bunch of tough punks. But Dana's perspective has changed. He already did that. Now it's time for him to do something else apparently. Why repeat yourself?
Dana called Junie and Shane nuts and punks. So there, he played the daddy role. But then he decided to change course and let them stay. I can imagine why. Ratings. Junie is an interesting guy, the way an impending train wreck is interesting. It is compelling to watch an insane man who is pathologically violent. Dana didn't want to lose the ratings. Junie is a gold mine.
Sly Dana decided that he'd "punish" the pair of punks by seeing to it that Shane (not Junie) would be in the very next match. With Junie the obvious ringleader, why did he single out Shane for "punishment"? Simple. He wants Junie on the show. Shane is expendable. Dana told coach Big Nog to select someone from his team to beat Shane up. Big Nog picked an undefeated wrestler, the guy Shane happened to be trying to pick a fight with in the house.
The fight was pretty close, but the undefeated wrestler from Big Nog's team was getting the better of it. Then the undefeated wrestler suckered Shane into moving a certain way, pretending he was giving him an opening to get on top, and the wrestler caught Shane like a spider catches a fly. He caught him in a triangle choke, then rolled over so he was sitting on Shane's neck, still maintaining the triangle choke. Shane tapped out.
Junie, sober as a judge, snapped. His buddy had just been defeated. Junie shouted challenges and insults at the winner, and went for him, to beat him up. Others got in between them and prevented any contact. That's how the show ended.
I just read Krystof's blog on Sherdog, titled My Best Friend Junie. Krystof wrote that he was stunned when Dana didn't throw Junie off the show, giving him carte blanche to do anything he wanted, but in a way he was happy, because that meant that he himself was free to kick the shit out of Junie in the house if he wants to.
Junie had two pro MMA fights, both against guys who had no wins before their fight. Junie won both. He comes from Lexington, Kentucky, which means he hasn't gotten the training he needs to compete at the professional level seriously. Southern boys suck at this game until they move somewhere they can get top level training and sparring partners. You have to go to one of the prestigious schools if you want to not suck. Learning MMA in Kentucky is like trying to join the NFL because you were good in Pop Warner football.
A good way to find a top school is simply to watch the tv series Tapout. They feature a lot of the best schools in the country. You have to go to one of them if you want to have any chance at all of making a career out of MMA. All your opponents will be going to those schools. You need a teacher like Miletich or Renzo or one of the others featured on Tapout. There are half a dozen. Curran. The chubby guy out in the woods. I forget their names. Couture. Just see where the champions go. That's where you have to go.
