I just received a gift of a new cell phone that does all kinds of cool stuff like taking photos and playing MP3 files.  I am really psyched about being able to listen to music, but I cannot make heads or tails out of the instructions for transferring MP3 files from my computer to my phone.  Something about a bluetooth.  Last time I checked, all my teeth were still pretty white.  Anybody know anything about this?  My computer is a Dell Inspiron 8100 laptop, and the phone is a Samsung SGH-E250.  Apparently the phone has a blue tooth (I don't even know where its mouth is), but how do I give my computer a blue tooth?  Do I punch it out and hope for the best?

Okay, I'm through joking... can anyone help me?  (and please remember that you are talking to someone who is technologically challenged).

Thanks!

    Kruuyai:
See the Bluetooth website. Hopefully, that will help answer your questions.

Bascially, Bluetooth is a wireless technology. If your phone is Bluetooth enabled that means it is enabled to allow you to use wireless devices like Bluetooth headsets with the phone. I'm not 100% sure what bluetooth device you will need to transfer MP3s from your computer to your phone, however.

Blue Ant makes such wireless devices, but other companies do as well. For instance, my phone is a Motorola as is my headset. Both are Bluetooth enabled.

Thanks, Zayda, I'll check it out.

Hmmmm... now I'm more confused than ever... why can't they just give me a USB cable to connect to my computer?  I'm going to sleep.  Hopefully, when I wake up, someone will magically have solved my problem.   :)

kruu- I asked my son your question and he said this might help.

Bluetooth is mainly used for connecting wireless headsets and not used to transfer MP3's to your phone.

To connect your model phone, you need to connect through USB. A cable should have been included to plug into the computer to the phone which is the way you download the music.

The micro SD card that came with the phone will only hold three or four songs. If you need more space he recommends going to newegg.com and buy a 1 to 2 gb micro SD card for about $20. It will allow you to load 100-200 songs.

kruu -- just an important caveat. be aware that enabling bluetooth for your cell phone and laptop continuously is a hacker's delight. bluetooth-enabled cells and comps carried by people just passing through malls and plazas have been known to be hacked by nearby pirate computers with sniffer software.

solution: learn to enable *and also to disable* bluetooth on your cp and laptop. enable it at home or in a secure place, do the file transfers, then make sure to disable it promptly soon after.

Beyond: Actually, bluetooth wireless technology is used for more than headsets. It can also be used for headphones and speakers for MP3 players, game controllers and gamepads for gaming systems, remote control cars, etc.

We tend to primarily think of it as technology for headsets because that's the one product that most people seem to recognize as bluetooth enabled.

Kruuyai: I'm sorry the site makes things even more confusing. What does the instructions manual to your phone say about getting MP3 files onto your phone if you want to transfer them from another device? (Your phone is probably web enabled so that you could download MP3 files and ring tones, at a cost.) Do you have an instruction manual for it?

And Moon is right, you have to make sure that you know how to enable and disable the bluetooth connection on both your laptop and your phone to keep them from getting hacked.

beyond:  Yeah... a USB would make me a lot more comfortable.  Unfortunately, the phone didn't come with one, but when I get time, I think I'll head down to my nearest gadget shop and see if they have something that will work.

    moonriver:  Thank you.

Zayda:  The user's manual says:  Utilizzate i metodi elencati di seguito.
                        * Download dal wireless web
                        * Download da un computer tramite il programma opzionale
Samsung PC Studio > Manuale dell'utente di Samsung PC Studio.

LOL.... That means, roughly... use the methods outlined below:  Download from the wireless web, or Download from a computer through the optional program "Samsung PC Studio> User's Manual of Samsung PC Studio."

The guy who gave me the phone said that I probably shouldn't try to connect to the web with it, because it will probably dial an Italian number to connect, and I'll pay a fortune for that... there must be some way to change that, too.  I guess it's going to take a while to get acquainted with my new toy.

i think these guy gave good advice about the bluetoth. anyway try using a usb cable it's better than a bluetooth... using bluetoooth and if you forgot you have it on. someone might hack into your computer or cellphone... it happpened to me before on my cellphone...

Dear satan:  lol.... those are two words I never thought I'd say together... anyway, thank you so much for your concern for my health and well being.  However, unlike you Americans, I rarely use my mobile for talking.  I just send SMS's, so I doubt if I'm getting nuked any more by that than by using this computer.

queen: Really?  What kind of info can they get from your cellphone?
  • moonriver said on Oct 06, 2008....
kruu -- hackers can get much info from your cp -- address books, msgs, images, as well as piggy-back on your cp services for their own needs. here are a few, from the same bluetooth site that zayda gave. of course there are ways to protect your bluetooth connections from being hacked. your cp provider or technician may give you some good tips if you ask the right questions.

kruu: they planted a virus on my phone and i have to reset it to a phone technician... all my friles was missing after that...
  • kruuyai said on Oct 10, 2008....
queen:  Crap.  Are you able to disable that pesky tooth now, so that it doesn't happen again?
  • queenparanoia said on Oct 10, 2008....
kruu: yes.you can turn off or on your bluetooth. i wish i could be there to show you how but i dont know how to work with your model of phone... well you can check the website... maybe it could tell you how. but the bluetooth is on the phone settings... i think...
  • kruuyai said on Oct 10, 2008....
queen:  Do you know if I have to buy something to make the bluetooth work between my computer and my phone?  I went to the Samsung store to get a USB cable, but they said my phone doesn't have a USB port, so I have to use bluetooth.  They showed me something that looked like it would plug into the computer.  It wasn't too expensive, but since we didn't have a common language, I couldn't really ask them any questions.
  • queenparanoia said on Oct 10, 2008....
yes kruu... we have that one... we used it to our pc... does it look like this? you plug it in and there's also a cd. you need to install a program for it...
