It is getting to that time of year where the clocks are turned back and the days become shorter.  I especially don't like this time of year.  The reason being..... not much sunshine.

So I thought I would do another post to remind people that this darkness can bring on what they call "seasonal affective disorder" or SAD.  It is real and does affect many people.  I for one am one of them.

There are also light bulbs called full spectrum that helps produce sun like effect.  I plan on ordering some this year for sure.  I found this website today.  The bulbs are fairly expensive, but what do I have to gain by using them?  A better mood? Sounds good to me!  Thanks FutureGodess for reminding me about these lightbulbs!

So, if you have a tendancy to feel a bit down or depressed during these long cold dark months, this might work for you too.

crap, I sound like a blogging advertizement!  LOL   Not meant to be I swear!

back about 10 or 12 yrs ago, one of my good friends brought one of those lights into the office in October and said she suffered from SAD..

it really did seem to help her....to me it just looked like added light.

i say if it works, go for it.

i know winter's coming, but i do love fall and i want to enjoy it- shorter days and all!

Well theres too much sunshine here!! I'd love to split it with you!! Infact the way its been getting hotter, I'd pay to have some heat taken off! (Oh wait, I already pay via the AC).. I hope the lights work for you.. I'll try sending over some sun from here..   :-)

The lack of sunlight in the winter never bothered me till I got older, it doesn't depress me, but it is a bummer to not be able to go sit in the back yard till ten o'clock at nite.

I remember seeing those lights on the TV show Northern Exposure, they wore them on their heads like a hat with the light coming down over their eyes.

Here is it dark just after four o'clock in the afternoon during winter and it doesn't get light till about eight am. That's too much dark, but other than going down under I don't know of a cure for it.

secret ~ I am going to try them.  what the heck, it can't hurt thats for sure.  and the are also supposed to be more energy efficient!  It will be like sitting at the seaside minus all the fun stuff! LOL

diabolic ~ to tell ya the truth, I don't have a clue where you live, but I do know it isn't near me!  LOL and I'd be glad to take some of the sunshine but you can keep that hot dry/humid heat

paper ~ night night my dear friend.

cuppa ~ I think it does affect me but not a lot, it is more like I just hate winter period... sun or darkness.  I think the lights will be nice to have though.

mobil ~ well go figure... lights on their heads and where was Norther Exposure taken place?? Did they wear square glasses too??  LOL  It gets dark here about 4pm too but gets light about 7 or so I think.

The lack of sunshine in the winter does not bother me but when it gets to mid January I love the light. I saw the daylight first at January 20th and that is maybe why I love the late January light. This short days blues that many people get is not so great here as in some countries. It has been researched and they think that we as a nation have adopted our selves through more than thousand years in this country to survive this.till there are people here that get very depressed during the winter.

skald ~ I think being surrounded by the sea has a lot to do with how people feel also.  If I lived near the ocean in the winter, I wouldn't care that the days were shorter... I would also look forward to seeing your northern lights in the sky.  :)

Quiet.....i kind like now the days are getting shorter and night longer....
Here in Texas days are still too hot for my like though...its Fall for goodness sake!
So seeing the days shorter reminds that indeed IS the season of fall...

I am sorry you are so affected by this though....Secret had a "bright" idea..lol..
Those lamps are famous for curing depression due to lack of natural light..

    Hope they will work fo you..{hugs}

I've heard of that condition before, it makes sense to buy those lights... I hope they work for you.

I understand though that moods can be effected by particular weather features.  here in the monsoon people get depressed when it rains for weeks non stop.. seriously I think the longest period we had with rain was about 18 days, it did not stop, heavy fat rain... depressing for sure.

quietone - one thing I just wanted to make you aware of is when the use of the lights can have a detrimental affect.

Rather than have those bulbs around my house I have a 'Lightbox'.  Admitedly it was £110 (UK) 10 years ago but I have only had to replace one bulb so far!

It looks a little like a wooden speaker off a stereo with a dimpled plastic, opaque cover at the front.  There are 5 18" bulbs in there.  I only put it on for about half an hour in the morning on my desk at work as, if I were to use it later in the day my seretonin levels may remain too high for me to relax then sleep at night.  I use this between mid Oct and mid Apr.  It really does work :-)

Note to self - get light box from under bed and clear 2 inches of dust off :-)

mobil ~ Alaska = Palin....... need I say more?  hahaha

ginger ~ I have been in TX once San An.  and it was way way too hot and humid there for me.  I'd be depressed just staying inside all the time due to the heat!  I am ordering those bubls today!

Lucy ~ yes when I lived out in the N.West (washington state) It rains a lot there too in the winter months.. dark dreary and cold.. a lot ofpeople got SAD out there too.  I am ordering those lights today

pusscat ~ I saw those boxes on the link where I am ordering the light bulbs.  I have a light by my recliner like a reading light/lamp so I will put one in there when I am on my computer or watching tv.  I will remember about the sleeping so not to use it later at night..... thanks for that tip!

Sick, Sick, Sick....
I feel so completely empty. I've been so depressed lately that I can't seem to remember when I became this way. What happened to me? I can't be happy anymore. I can't bring myself to do any of the things I used to like. All I want to do is sit around and...
and thats verrrry naughty of me....
What is the cure for a loss of appetite? Recently, I cannot seem to eat much food, nor do I have the desire to eat. I am not sure why exactly, but I have experienced this in the past and have no idea how I got back to eating....
I feel so sad today, i can't quite put my finger on why though, which is kind of annoying....
