Hi Everyone - I think this may have been around before, but it doesn't hurt to be careful.

I am passing this email forwarded to me this morning. It's about a
medication that is familiar to many of us. Note also the FDA 's comments at the end of the message.

I received this information from a friend whose mother recently passed away.

Apparently, this was caused by a medication that is deadly. Here are the
details and I suggest you pass it on to your loved ones and others.

Subject: Phenylpropanolamine (PPA)

I would like to thank those of you who expressed condolences on the recent passing of my mother. She suffered a hemorrhagic stroke while she was driving home from my house on 7/30 and passed away on 8/3. My mother's stroke and passing was an enormous shock to my family because she did not have any symptoms or risk factors for a stroke. Just the week before she had gone to her doctor for a check up and received a cl ean bill of health. She did, however, develop a cold while she was visiting me a nd had taken Alka Seltzer Cold Plus for 3 days. Since her passing, we have learned that Alka Seltzer is one of the many cold medicines that contains Phenylpropanolamine (PPA) which can cause hemorrhagic stokes or cerebral bleeding even with the first use. I am forwarding a list of other medications that currently use PPA. These medicines are supposedly being recalled but my mother just purchased this medication less than two weeks ago. Pharmaceutical companies have known about this danger for years, we unfortunately, did not.

I u rge you to r eview the list of medicines with PPA and avoid these
medication s. All drugs containing PHENYLPROPANOLAMINE are dangerous. You may want to try calling the 800 number listed on most drug boxes and inquire about a REFUND. Please read this CAREFULLY Also, please pass this on to everyone you know. STOP TAKING anything containing this ingredient. It has been linked to increased hemorrhagic stroke (bleeding in brain) among women
ages 18-49 in the three days after starting use of medication. Problems were not found in men, but the FDA recomm ended that everyone (even children) seek alternative medicine.

The following medications contain Phenylpropanolamine:
Acutrim Diet Gum Appetite Suppressant
Acutrim Plus Dietary Supplements
Acutrim Maximum Strength Appetite Control
Alka-Seltzer Plus Children's Cold Medicine Effervescent
Alka-Seltzer Plus Cold medicine (cherry or or ange)

Triaminic Triaminicol Cold & Cough

I just found out and called the 800# on the container for Triaminic and they informed me that they are voluntarily recalling the following medicines because of a certain ingredient that is causing strokes and seizures in children:

Orange 3D Cold & Allergy Cherry (Pink)
3D Cold & Cough Berry
3D Cough Relief Yellow 3D Expectorant

They are aski ng you to call the m at ; 800-548-3708 with the lot number on the box so they can send you postage for you to send it back to them, and they will also issue you a refund. If you know of anyone else with small children,

PLEASE PASS THIS ON. THIS IS SERIOUS STUFF!

DO PASS ALONG TO ALL ON YOUR MAILING LIST so people are
informed. They can then pass it along to their families.

To confirm these findings please take time to check the following:

Cman ~ it is a nice fall day today.  Think I will stop my domestic chores and go for a nice ride with my camera.  :)  hope you have a good day too.

I don't take medicine, well rarely do I take it, but thanks for the warning quiet. Mostly I worry about sexual risks, shriveled up balls and things like that haha.
  • evil_twin said on Oct 04, 2008....
I think all of these medicines should be safe now. This problem was a few years ago, and I think they've already gotten rid of this dangerous ingredient. When you click the link provided, it's dated 2005. And I found this at Snopes. com.

It's still good to know in case anyone has really old medicine laying around. But then you probably wouldn't want to take it anyway!

mobil ~ I don't think there is much hope for the ball thing!  LOL

e.t. ~ thanks for that info as well.  A friend sent me this email so I cut and pasted it here.  I thought I had heard it before, but ya never know these days!  I do have old cold medicine around too.... and I would take it!  LOL  Guess I should check out my own meds.  Thanks kyle.

Scary stuff that I didn't know anything about, so thanks!  I hope that's true that it's now gone from the products.  (and what a list!)  I used to take alot of plain alka-seltzer, if that counts, and some of the other stuff listed I'm sure.  I'll check the shelves, because there's some old stuff around here that needs tossing.  And I'll mention it to a few people, too.
  • quietone said on Oct 04, 2008....
wombie ~ hi, yes, I have to check my supply as well.  Glad nyquill wasn't on the list.
  • skald said on Oct 04, 2008....
As I told you today I never use cold medication. I just buy lemons and drink lemon water when I get a cold, like I have now and it will clear in 3 days,. Love and hugs.
  • quietone said on Oct 04, 2008....
skald ~ maybe I will try that remedy when I get my cold this winter.  I could do that.  thanks.  :)
  • nytquill17 said on Oct 04, 2008....
Yes it is gone now from all those products.  It was scary at the time; it came out suddenly and there were a lot of common medicines involved, but this has blown over some time ago :)

I don't know if any of you recall, but a couple of years ago it was all but impossible to find some of these products on store shelves.  It was either while I was still in college or even a bit before that, so at least 3-7 years ago.

Anyway these products were impossible to find because they had all been recalled due to PPA - they didn't even wait for the companies to produce "reformulated" PPA-free drugs; they took them off shelves right away and there was quite a gap of time before any reformulated versions were available.

So unless your medicines at home are many many years old (in which case you shouldn't be taking them anyway!), they are now PPA-free.

Very interesting, we get Dimetapp here.. not that I take medicines myself  but I'll pass this on to my sister who has kids who constantly get colds.. wow! pretty responsible isn't it! (sarcasm)
  • pusscat said on Oct 05, 2008....
Thanks quiet - I know it does say 2005 but in this day and age we can never be too careful about trusting whether the whole recall thing was successful.  We hear so often about drugs being marketed then 6 years later find out how dangerous they are - bit late for those who have been taking it!
  • quietone said on Oct 05, 2008....

pusscat ~ I have taken alka seltzer cold for a while off and on and had no side affects.  maybe it just affects certain people?  But, like you say, one can never be too careful now days.

nyquill ~ thanks.  I sure hope so.  I am one for keeping "older" cold remedies around.  I will go through and check the dates.

Lucy ~ well like a few have said here, it is an old email back in '05 so probably most on the shelf now are okay... but yes, I'd check the medicine cabinet just in case some old ones are still hanging around there.
