We’re heading off to New York in a few weeks (but that’s a different story), flying from Heathrow.  Now although New York is one of my favourite places on the earth, it doesn’t quite beat London.  So just to get my yearly dosage of our beautiful capital, we’re travelling down a few days prior to our flight, giving us three days to take in the wonderful sights of London.

I’ve been to London time and time again and stayed in a few great Hotels.  We have relatives there.  I’ve worked on business there.  We’ve been to Wembley to watch the FA Cup Final.  I don’t know what it is about the place, but I can’t keep away.

Maybe it’s the people.  London gets a lot of bad press for not being a hospitable City.  And I know what they mean.  If you bump into someone walking down the street, you try and stop to apologise.  But by that time they’re half way down the street and have crossed the road.  And vice versa.  Maybe it’s because it happens such a lot and everyone is so busy they don’t have time to stop and say sorry.  However, this is the part of London I love.  You can be anyone you want.  You don’t have to worry about seeing someone you might know.  You can be a social recluse for a few days if you wish.  Or you can be the most vibrant person ever.  No one cares and no one batters an eyelid – it’s fantastic.

Or perhaps it’s the food.  You cannot – and I mean that honestly – go to London and not find a type of food you adore.  There are all the (now normal) Italian, Chinese and Indian restaurants dotted around the City.  However, have a little wander and you’ll find Cantonese, South American and even Goan.  If you can’t find something you like to eat in London, then you must be, well, I don’t know, but it’s impossible.

Overall though, I think it’s probably the sheer amount of things to do that attract me to London. I’ve been now….dozens of times and I still find new things to do.  I did the Tower of London on my visit and mixed it in with a day or two of shopping (which, although I don’t like shopping, once you get started it London, you have to be dragged away kicking and screaming).  However, it wasn’t until my most recent trip that I went to Madame Tussauds Waxwork Museum – and I haven’t even been on the London Eye yet.  Which by tourist standards is a major faux pas.
