Impact. On our lives. The good things. Not the bad.

What are the things that have impacted our lives which gave us direction, made us feel life was worth living, made us feel alive?

I ask you to think back...who was the person, what one thing, and what series of related events, or several events that come to your mind first. Don't put a lot of thought into it, don't take it apart and compare. Treat it the same as when people ask what is the first word that comes to mind when another word is mentioned. Tell several if you wish, but tell which you thought of first.

This is how it came to me :

Person - Has to be my wife, hands down. Second would be my mother (I told why in another post). Follow that with my daughter and grandfather.

Thing - My car in high school, another hands down. Such a beautiful and powerful girl, gave me my freedom, took me everywhere I went, was always there for me. I sincerely loved that hunk of metal because she was more than that, she became a part of me and I grieved when she passed.

Events - This was a tougher one. There are so many to grasp quickly. There's the birth of children, special times with friends, to name just two. But I did say the first that came to mind and the first was great performances. I've been to and seen so many. They never fail to make me feel so alive, its like entering a different world for a couple of hours. I can see the same effect on the faces of the people I go with, and the other people that are there. The anticipation is electric, the performers your world.

Care to give your first impressions?

How beautifully you write. The person is your wife.

The people that have made a strong impact on my life are grandma and grandpa. Then come so many others.

    Here goes, without pre-thinking.....

Person - My third music teacher.  She saw in me the potential.  She paid for my piano lessons, flute lessons, flute and other activities.  I never felt like my income level or social circumstances mattered and that she saw me.  I had other strong influences similar to this, but she was the first.

Thing - Piano.  I don't play anymore, but growing up and into college it was the one thing that was constant.  I still own it, but it's stored away.  It was passed down to me from an Uncle who I loved dearly.

Events - This is tougher.  I think the one event that has had the greatest impact on me was the morning my mother told me that she and my dad were divorcing.  It rocked my world to be given up on by him.  A lot of bad and hard stuff happened from there forward, but it's by going through that stuff that I became who I am.

Person: My mum.. dad.. sister.. my bf. They have always given me unconditional doting love.

Thing: Books. I've always loved books and they've been a big part of my childhood. I remember when I couldn't yet read, I would take books to people and ask them to read to me.. all the time.. even guests! I was an annoying talkative kid.. hehehe..

Event: I remember being on the stage for the very first time in kindergarden.. its a strong memory and I've never had stage fear till date. I enjoy public speaking very much.. I've also danced and sung for an audience and I love being on stage.

skald- I mentioned my grandfather also. He was what you could call my first mentor.

unique- I must say you had a very caring and giving teacher. Few would go as far as she did with a student. My wife might say a piano also for the thing.

diabolic- I think books would be the thing for many people, they are much loved around here. How funny that I said performances and you said being the performer. I can understand you on this - very easily. (Are you coming to my city soon?)
  • diabolicdame said on Oct 02, 2008....
Oh btv.. performing is just my hobby.. otherwise I'm studying bioinformatics.. its quite likely I may end up a scientist and give a seminar in your city instead. Either ways I'll get you a VIP seat.    ;-)

She was/is an extraordinary human.  I know I should look her up and visit her, but she lives in my hometown, which I avoid like the plague.
  • beyondtheveil said on Oct 02, 2008....
diabolic- Hey, great, I'll bring hot dogs, we'll have lunch!

unique- I wrote a post about my favorite teacher and many times I've regretted not visiting and telling her what she meant to me. My advice is sneak in one time and visit before its too late.

Person- My Dad had more influence upon me than anyone else, strong influence and direction from an early age.

Thing- Firearms, I began shooting at the age of 7, and went from pellet gun to 22 cal. rifle to shotguns and high powered center fire pistols and rifles. I spent all my time in the woods and afield. It helped shape me into who I am today.

Events Meeting my wife and the birth of our children, self explanatory. Also the death of my Father

beyond- you make it sound so easy to come up with these things. for me it's not.

person- honestly, the first one that comes to mind that made me feel like life was worth living would be...andy. he was a friend of mine a few years back. we've lost touch but his cool, calm, zen-like demeanor and easy-going attitude made me realize that i could be that way too. if that makes sense!

thing- i don't really attach a lot of importance to objects. i'm tempted to say pets here, even though they aren't things, but bundles of love.

event- as odd as it sounds, Sept 11 had a strong impact on my thinking. a positive influence. taught me to live my life my way and to appreciate the people that surround me in life.
  • beyondtheveil said on Oct 02, 2008....
mobil- Actually I went from a carved (saw & knife) gun first. The man we rented from sawed it for me and I sanded and painted it. Best gun I ever had, just couldn't miss.

Then a BB gun, .22, 16 ga. shotgun, and Springfield 30-06. I think you know my fav is Winchester 94. Have 30-30 and .22 in the model 94. One of my most fun guns was a .30 cal. Herrett in the Thompson Contender with scope. You had to make the brass from a 30.30 cartridge and load.

secret- Working in a store can be fun. A friend and I at a young age worked in a small independent grocery store for free. We unloaded, stocked, and bagged for a long time there. The owner slipped us a ten now and then. We loved it.

phoenix- I have a friend I met when I was five and still see and spend much time with. He's been a part of my life. Friends make big impacts on us. My dog that died 13 months was one of my best friends. I still think of her several times a day. Always will,. I think.

    BeyBey....

Persons: my father and my nun teacher in 5th elementary because encouraged  me to think, open my mind, use my brain and don't be afraid of my opinions.
My girlfriend Katia, because she accepted me in my whole entity and made me see that the world was not all in black and white.

Things: my father's library...magic place full of treasures. My father's collection of classical music...my father's paintings....my father's sailing boat. Then movies, songs and books. Books and books and books....

Events: the day i moved here in the States has been more influential for me that my daughter's birth, if i can say...but after all..those two events came together so...i can hardly distinguish them...
And then..each day is an event in our life, BeyBey.....:-)

    So nice post.....again...

beyond- awww.... i still miss my orange kitty cat i had when i was a kid. but my siamese i have now is bitchin' gnarly!
  • beyondtheveil said on Oct 02, 2008....
ginsoul- I had a feeling you would mention the boat. That just had to make an impression on you (it made an impression on me!). Did you get some of the books, paintings, and music? You may have mentioned this before and I forgot. Oh, and coming to a new country and having a baby would be unforgetable.

phoenix- If we ever got another cat, it would definitely be a Siamese.

beyond- yay! mine talks a lot, but he started off really quiet. :-D   he's awesome, intelligent, handsome...basically we worship him!

hi there friend. here's my take:

persons: my family, a half-dozen teachers, dozens of comrades (some of whom are now long gone), and two best friends (sophie's one).

things: similar to ginger's -- books. those in my parents' library, in school libraries, and in the public libraries and bookstores in the various cities where i've stayed. now, increasingly, my computer and the internet.

events: my activist years, especially those critical events that i've already blogged about here.

  • queenparanoia said on Oct 03, 2008....

person: me... sound narcissistic but it the first thing that came to my mind... for the first time in my life i am now in the process of finding myself... so i choose me... ;-)

thing: computer.... it connected me to the world... knowing that my world does not revolve in this boring house but i could share my life to the world.... and through the internet.... ;-)

events: when i quit school. for some it was the dumbest thing i ever done... for some the bravest... for me the most liberating... why? because i'm brealing free from the expectations of my family and the world... because finally i chose something for me... for my future... for my happiness... ;-)

dude i love when you post something like this... ;-)

person:  My nephew.  I love him heart and soul.

thing:  My first stereo. It fueled my love for music.  I fell in love with lyrics and that fueled my desire to write poetry.

event:  All the sleepovers my niece and nephew spent with me when they were little.  I loved having them here.  We went to movies, made crafts, explored and baked cakes for our own little parties.  I will always cherish those memories.

    Great post. :-)

moon- Glad to have you back for a while anyway. I have the feeling you'll be heading out on another adventure soon. My car won out as the first to hit my mind, not as most important. I agree with you and ginger that books would probably top my list. My library reflects that. I well understand your choice on events. You provided some very stirring reads on those.

queenie- There is nothing at all wrong with choosing yourself. As we advance in life, it is good to take note of progress and feel it. Computer is an excellent choice and the sharing an excellent point.

CW- I didn't even think of my stereo in those early years and that's strange because of the endless pleasure it gave. It wouldn't have topped my car, but how I loved that stereo. It was a few friends and cousins that bring memories of sleepovers to me.
