Democratic candidate Barack Obama doesn't want the embattled mayor of Detroit on hand when Obama accepts the party's presidential nomination in Denver.

A spokesman for Obama was was telling Thursday that Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick would be a distraction if he goes to the congress as a superdelegate.

To some students, though, the decision is more than personal; they tell it's fouling their campus and their air, and costing taxpayer money to clean up the mess.

A 12-year-old from Portland has won a $25,000 award from a national organization that supports gifted youth.

William Yuan's award from the Reno, Nevada-based Davidson Institute for Talent Development, came for scientific research that he conducted.

Republican John McCain's wife has been treated for a "minor sprain" after A fewone at a campaign event in Michigan shook her hand firmly.

A campaign spokeswoman tells Cindy McCain left the West Bloomfield, Mich., campaign event this week for X-rays at a local hospital after an enthusiastic supporter squeezed too much.

McCain's wife has had previous procedures for carpal tunnel syndrome and the handshake exacerbated the condition.

Spokeswoman Jill Hazelbaker tells Mrs. McCain will campaign as planned on Thursday.
