I bought the 2006 Writer's Market book through a book club. I've been looking through it and I've found a few possible contests. I am sort of sad though because they all charge entry fees that we can't really pay right now. My question is this:

Does anyone know of any contests/magazines that don't charge a reading fee?

I'd like to try to get my work out there, but I either run into fees or I find stuff that I have to have at least 40 poems for. This wouldn't be a problem, except, when my husband and I left our last apartment, I lost all of my poems due to our landlord getting rid of our stuff without evicting us. I had over 70 poems in that apartment. And I knew right where they were. When I realized I didn't have them and they weren't with my friend we stayed with while moving, I cried. The poems had been a collection I had been writing since 8th grade. It was heartbreaking to lose all that work. I am trying to get more together, but it seems that my fanfiction writing has taken over as I can't get a poem out right now to save my life. So, do any of the writers on here know where I can go to try to get the poems I have into publication?

I do not know the best way of doing what you want, but I'd like to comment regardless, because I am interested in possibly doing the same in the near future.

I've also lost a great deal of my poetry, except I've done it purposely. There have been at least three occasions in my life where I burned all of my poems in a ceremonial "standing outside in the backyard with my brother".

Do I regret doing it? No. But I don't plan on doing it again. Hope you find a way to do it inexpensively, and when you do, let me know!

    you could publish it online.

There's a website that allows you to upload your stuff and pay you when someone buys it. It's free to upload.

I myself haven't used it, but I've heard good things. Perhaps you guys could let me know if you try it also?

My rule of thumb is: if they want money from me up front,
it is probably a scam. I have seen some posts around here
(cannot remember where) that people said they paid and
got nothing, or the website changed hands and they lost
what they paid. They are supposed to pay you (and me),
    not the other way around.

Grape: I have spent the last few days think, writing, and reading all sorts of things on www.lulu.com. I finally made the choice today. I now have a small (only 23 pages) book of poems up on there. It feels pretty good to see it up there and know that someone might by it and actually hold my writings in there hands.

ALIEN: I made the mistake a few years ago of signing up with poetry contests like that. I got invited several times to convention/award ceremony that would have cost me about $1000 to go to. On top of that, I would have had to pay around $30 for the book with my poem in it. It's ridiculous and makes poets afraid to enter any contests for fear of getting screwed.
