A few weeks ago, I was talking with my daughter about her Drama assignment.  She was to write a short paper on:  “What is the purpose of The Arts?  Are they important?”  We talked about it for some time, and I thought her finished paper was quite good.

Then, last week, our Prime Minister made an incredibly stupid statement… not an unusual event for him.  He said that “normal” people do not care about, or support, the Arts.  He went on to say that the Arts are about rich artists, standing around at galas, whining about their grants.  This is how he justified massive cuts to the Arts in Canada.

True or not, I call this statement stupid because we are in the middle of an election campaign and in one fell swoop, he has galvanized a huge segment of the population against him.  Hundreds of thousands of people work in the Arts in Canada.  They are actors, writers, graphic artists, film makers, musicians, painters, craftsmen and so on.  And, they are a vocal lot.  He can expect the reaction of the Arts Community to be loud and heated.  In fact it already has been.  Yesterday, I read a terrific article by Margaret Atwood…. Do non-Canadians know who Margaret Atwood is?  If not, they should!…. in The Globe and Mail.  Check it out here if you’re interested.

I believe we are all born with a love of art.  I don’t think I’ve ever met a little kid who didn’t love to draw pictures, or play an instrument, or sing a song, or perform little skits for company.  If this love is nurtured and encouraged, it grows and blossoms.  If not, it withers and dies.  I believe that a country without Art is a country without beauty.  It is a dismal place indeed.  If you’ve never been to a play, or an art gallery, or a concert hall then you are missing something…. Something important.

So what do you think?  Are the Arts important?  Should government support the Arts?  Either individual artists or institutions like theatres and galleries.  Keep in mind that, without government funding, most theatres and art galleries and concert halls could not survive.

i'm lucky actorguy-  i live in a community that believes in the value of the arts in education.  our administrators talk at every opportunity about how important the arts are in the lives of our children-
there have been many studies to prove that the arts are critical in developing creativity, innovation, ingenuity......

your Prime Minister is behind the times and should do some research.

  • gingersoul said on Sep 27, 2008....
Actor....a world without art is simply unthinkable.
Art is the expression of our deep emotions, out feelings, our fears.
Through the many forms of arts (music, literature, painting, sculpting, photography, dance and so on) we can see each other.
We can understand each other no matter the barriers of culture, color skins, different language, tradition and politics.

    Art unifies the world.

A society that considers arts a superfluous, a non necessity or a danger is   a mutilated society.
Individuals can feel connected to each other throu art and feel their own uniqueness at the same time.
Your Prime Minister is an arid man, one who is ready to sacrifice the truth that comes from art for money and dirty politics.

I grew up in an artistic environment and i am proud o fit. My daughter is picking up my same artistic strike and i am proud of it . Art made me open my eyes to see the beauty and the differences of this word. And in doing so, it opened my mind too.
I hope it will work the same for my daughter.

Hi AG, you know I've read quite a bit of Margaret Atwood and completely admire her works. So little me in Aussie land definitely has heard of the inspiring lady.

The arts are such an important part of a societies fabric, in essence it knitts together societies own footprint for all to see, the many veils and hues of our society.  How important can you get?

For what is the use of a man to paint a scene of a women crying, another man to see the picture and write a story, and yet another man to create the play as the women who initially posed for the painting to sit in the audience and see that life is indeed worthy of living and crying in.

I do still think that politicians remove themselves to quickly from the arts, it happens here, thankfully we do have lively and outspoken arts bodies here.

To be crass yet to the point ~ What an Ass!

secret: The Arts in our community are also very strong.  It is the aministration, particularly the Federal goverment, that see it as something that's easy to cut when dollars are tight.  With funding cuts, so many programs will disappear.  Children's programs, particularly in music and theatre, will soon become a thing that only the rich can afford.

ginger:  I should have known that an Italian would understand how important art is to a society!  I firmly believe that when the arts flourish, the country and the people flourish as well.

Lucy:  Well put, luv!  Without art, how can we possibly hope to understand ourselves and each other?

  • Actorguy said on Sep 28, 2008....
sorry Lucy, I forgot to mention Margaret Atwood!  I'm glad she's made it to the Land of Oz.  To be honest, I'm not a huge fan of her books.  They are beautifully written, but somehow they seem to connect with women better than men.  But I have heard her speak, and read a number of her articles.  She is such an enormous talent!
  • Lucytorial said on Sep 28, 2008....

Its more her articles that I admire although I have read three times her novel Alias Grace and found it the most beautifully written book I have ever read.

Everybody should support the arts.. isn't that how we enjoy life? Painting, drama, movies, literature, music, dance.. isn't that the joy of life? I certainly love the arts!
  • pickersplock said on Sep 28, 2008....
Initially, an artist is someone who can't control the urge to create.
Look at all of the great artists, they would have created with or without an audience.

The monetary bottom line is important as well.  I mean what are the big draws to NYC?  Would it be a popular tourist destination without Broadway, MOMA, Radio City?  What does everyone want to see when they go to Italy?
    Come on!  Art is lucritive!
  • beyondtheveil said on Sep 28, 2008....
I once read that after a civilization dies the only thing left to show it existed is it's art. Everyone, and I can't think of an exception, has at least one and usually more of either the performing or static arts that they love. All people support their favorite in some way.

Its too bad they don't extend that feeling to all the arts.

My younger daughter just graduated college with a degree in music education. It was very difficult for her to get a job despite having great credentials and rave recommendations because music education isn't funded very much in America, as compared to other developed countries. She finally did get a full time teaching job, teaching K through 3rd grade in 3 different schools in a minority area, all for music. So, 3 schools, 4 grades, all sharing 1 music teacher. She loves it though.

One little boy was terrified of a storm raging outside. She took the little boy on her lap and had him sing The Eentsy Weentsy Spider to the class. It made him forget his fear of the storm. She said see, music is good for everything.

Actor....well...it must run in our blood....lol..

I love Margaret Atwood....and that article is brilliant.

The most idiotic thing the minister said has been making that distinction between ordinary and not ordinary people...

Like Atwood said.... we are all ordinary people.
    And art is our salvation.

And btw, even my daughter has noticed the increasing presence of you Canadians ....lol.....
She was watching Degrassi, a Canadian tv show, (she loves it) and she said  "Did you notice that lately a bunch of creative people in music and movies are Canadians?"

You guys should defenestrate your minister ....lol...

as an artist growing up in public school, i was fortunate to have art throughout my years as a student...shortly after i graduated in the '70's, they cut art from the curicullum....when this pattern began to cross the land the weird thing was that taking away the arts led to poverty in the math and science sector

innovation begins in the arts and makes its way to science

look at what Star Trek did for our space agency...these two realms are inseperable

once a week i have the privilege to be part of an international drum circle where almost every type of instrument comes to get played. year after year we show up and create pure unadulterated love on the beach. we have a contingent of whales, dolphins and sea turtles that remember the drum circle and come to hang out just beyond the breakers.

this group of people watch the world go through its twists and turns and for us, nothing changes too much that our musical fellowship falls apart. in this way we have a form of intimacy and love that soothes our little hearts

YES THE ARTS ARE THE LIFELINE TO UNCONDITIONAL LOVE

and the US is definitely impoverished for cutting these ties in public school

thanks for the great topic actor guy
  • Fallyn said on Sep 28, 2008....
without the arts we become a country, a population, a world, a people, a community with no soul.
    no expression.
    no beauty,

what happens when we take away all art?
    what is left?

art is joy, and mourning and love, and feeling as though you can fly when your feet are still on the ground.

without art there is nothing but a static existence.
art gives life it's color and flavor.
art shows us how it is to live life as someone else.
it teaches us empathy and lets us share in the joy of another's existence.

it highlights the pain in the world that must be changed, and the beauty around us that must be noticed.

okay, i'm done with my tirade.

  • Actorguy said on Sep 28, 2008....

Lucy: I haven't read Alias Grace.  Maybe I should give it a try.

diabolic: Art is the joy of life!  I can't argue with that.

pickers: "an artist is someone who can't control the urge to create."  Wow, I like that!  The income generated by the arts is something that politicians need to look at.  When I travel anywhere, its mostly to see their art.  Whether its music, architecture, theatre or whatever.  Art generates tourism dollars!

beyond:  that was very well put.  I think your art is showing!

just saw the tags on this thread....

now i know what everyone is upset about...that's pretty hard to take after all
  • Actorguy said on Sep 28, 2008....

lfbno:  don't get me started on the school system!  Music, drama and fine art have always taken a back seat to the more "important" subjects.  I'm glad your daughter has found a job.  We all need more music!

ginger: The Canadian film and music industries have grown enormously in the last 20 years or so.  Have you seen the new Canadian series "Flashpoint" down there?  Its brilliant!

hopefully we will get to defenestrate Mr Harris on Oct 14th!

andorra:  you make some great points.  That "drum circle" sounds very cool!

Fallyn:  How are you sweetie?  I have seen some of your art and it is very impressive!  You should post more.

  • diabolicdame said on Sep 28, 2008....
I don't what kind of people leave these horrible tags! I've marked them all as bad tags and I hope these people go to hell!
  • Actorguy said on Sep 28, 2008....

I deleted the blank space andorra, but also lost your comments about Fallyn's poem. Sorry about that.

If people could help me out by deleting the bad tags it would be appreciated.  What is this guy, like 10 years old?

  • RollingC said on Sep 28, 2008....

  • gingersoul said on Sep 28, 2008....
Actor.......i deleted them....they will disappear in 15 minutes....:-)

Rolling........just click on teh x close to the bad tags that needs to be erased. I had the same problem in my two last posts and someone very kindly deleted them for me.
  • Actorguy said on Sep 28, 2008....
RC:  you delete them by clicking on the little "x" beside the tag.  I think more than one person has to do it before they disappear.  Lucy and Alienated have both posted on this problem.

Of course the arts are important... Your prime minister is an idiot!  It is a freedom to experess ones self no matter what "media" you choose.   I don't understand the "world" of the theater or some of the art I look at in fine galleries but that doesn't mean I don't enjoy what I am seeing.  The same with music, I don't read music, but I love listening to it ~
  • Actorguy said on Sep 28, 2008....
quiet: Our "idiot" Prime Minister will probably get re-elected, but there are a few hundred thousand artists who have vowed to vote ABC - Anything But Conservative.

he said what??? what an an idiot!!!  yes the arts are important it gives color to life.. whenever you go or see you see art... just a simple graffitti to the tallest building that is art.... life would be boring if we all dont have art....

    ridiculous i know.

i do need to put more art up. i just never think to photograph it.
and i don't have the means to easily upload from this computer.
    retarded. *frown*

Well, the PM is a dolt.  Think about it.  Art is deeply engrained in us.  Have you ever noticed that practically most of what gets found in archaeological digs are art objects?  Sometimes functional, sometimes not, but always people have adorned and created objects simply for the sake of beauty.  People who think art isn't important simply do not have their eyes open to the world.
