Nobody played the tortured anti-hero better.

He was one of my favorite actors.  What I admired most about him was not his acting ability, but the fact that he and his wife, actress Joanne Woodward, did what few in Hollywood seem to be able to do:  stay married for more than 50 years.

Your battle is over.  Rest in peace.

I am trying to type through my tears here mims.  He was my ultimate hero as the actor and as the man.

I have not had any TV on since Thursday and so, when I clicked on My Users, the title of your post hit me so hard.

May he be as happy where he is now as he has been here.  My heart goes out to Joanne.  A rare and classy lady to say the least.

I have not played the video above yet but will forever remember his smile at the end of 'Cool HAnd Luke'

PS - I meant to also mention that he is forever immortalised in a way that many do not realise; by Guns 'n' Roses no less.

One of my favourite songs by them is a haunting balad called Civil War, and begins with the voice of the prison warden in Cool Hand Luke, when he is making Paul Newman dig a 6 foot hole then fill it in, dig the hole again, then fill it in again until he is exhausted.  The warded stands looking down at Paul and says, "Now. . . what we have here is, failure to communicate, some men you just can't reach so, you get what we had here last week, which is the way he wants it, well, he gets it".  I always think of Paul Newman when I hear that song.

Deaths of celebrities rarely bring me to tears. But this one took my breath away. Paul Newman was such the quintessential gentleman, who invested that same heart and soul into his charity work as he did his acting and directing.

    Rest in Peace

Oh Zayda - that was so beautifully put.

It seems we aren't generating actors like those of the past or of Paul Newman's class.

One of his best pictures for me anyway was Slapstick. the hockey movie haha

    He will be missed...........thanks Mimi

i didn't know! what a shame! not only was he one of the great american actors, but he was also a great humanitarian. he used his name, his fame, his brand recognition, to sell products to the mass public, and in turn did not take a dime of profit for himself, he used it all for those who are less fortunate. i saw him last year on a letterman interview. he truly cared about other people. something that is very rare in hollywood, and nonexistant in washington d.c.

good bye paul, with you goes an entire era.

I'm sad....it's illogical that someone lives forever but it's still a sad moment when you realize that he's passed away.   He was one of my idols of the movie screen.
    Rest in Peace,
    Rc

I liked him alot,  he was a great actor , and you're right it takes a great deal to keep a marrige lasting that long. I don't know much about his product line but it would have been nice if he would have stopped by and made some of his famous pop corn. To much work for me. I liked him in the movie where he ate all those eggs. In the movie I think they called him Luke ?  Yes R.I.P. Paul Newman

Great video MissMimi thanks for posting it.

I just saw gingers post today too.  I hadn't even heard it.  Busy working and sleeping I guess.  May he finally rest in peace.  I also didn't realize he was married to the same person for 50 year...... yes that is a monumental feat in the world of movie stars for sure.
