I was thinking about something tonight, and I wondered how many of us carry around something for good luck, for protection, for a sort of touchstone during the day, etc.

It might be a cross pendant, a rabbit's foot keychain, a stone in your pocket, or something entirely different.

If you don't carry or wear anything like that, do you have something along those lines at home for a similar purpose? Do you feel that it helps in times of stress/misfortune to have that/those item(s) around, or is it just force of habit that you keep it around? What do you feel it does for you, if anything? (Reassurance just having it around counts!)

I really am curious about this, so anything you care to share would be of great interest to me.

(Instruments of violence, pepper spray, etc. don't count, and anyone who posts something like that will have their comment deleted.)

I don't actually carry anything with me as a good luck charm. But I do have a few charm bags at home that I leave hanging around in various places. They're filled with herbs and different crystals and stones, and are for different things. I have one that I might wear around my neck if I can't sleep. And another one for protection from harm. Which honestly I forget to put on most of the time, but it hangs on the mirror in the bedroom.

We also have a broom above our front door that's supposed to keep out evil spirits. I don't know if it works....

I made a specific charm bag for something else once, and within a few weeks, I believe it did what it was supposed to do. So I think they might help, or it might just be that your outlook changes when you think it's helping.

For many years, I wore a silly necklace made out of a cord holding a blue rock, until the many showers wore down the cord and it broke.

It was a stone my son gave me, after an accident that turned out to be a prayer answered.  (I said I would wear it for him and that he would know I loved him)

We tried to fix the necklace, but not even a drill could fix it.

I still have the rock, but not on a necklace.

I still have the feelings, like a rock.   But not the necklace.

Well, from the very first time I had a handbag my mother always told me to put a gold coin in it.  So each handbag I own has a gold coin zipped up in a pocket.

Lucy:  Probably came from, "Put a dime in your shoe to call home for help."  But it costs more now.

You know what maybe thats right.  There is another saying I know, don't leave coins lying around as they will sooner leave your purse.. something like that.
  • wombat said on Sep 24, 2008....
I often dream of "picking up coins" like walking in a park area and finding money.  But every time I move, I put a few pennies in each box.

I wear a blue saphire locket in a gold chain around my neck.. my mum gave it to me because her astrologer said it would be lucky for me. I have been wearing it for three years now. In hindsight it has been lucky for me, though I only wore it intially because I thought its pretty.. hehe.

I carry a citrine crystal (rock) and an adventurine rock in my bra on the left side so it is close to my heart.  At this time, these rocks have the symbolism of bringing good luck and good fortune.

When the prayer that I need answered is done, I may change these to another crystal or rock with the symbolism I need to make that prayer come true...

i am sure you aren't surprised that i do, everyday, tied to my belt loop or in a pocket. it is a pouch i made with a dream catcher sewed on the outside of it. in the pouch is my spirit stones that, i play with, rub, focus on.
then are four stones....a tiger eye for good luck, truth, protection, and from ill-will of others. then i have a snow crystal that helps me meditate, peace and for serenity. a bloodstone for removing obstacles, enhance talents/energy, balance. the one i play with most is my aventurine for creativity, courage, calm, sleep.

in my house are different colored candles, i'll light a certain color for a certain prayer everyday!

i think they all work because i, my thoughts, make things manifest as they need to. huh? yup that's how it works. *smile*

Instruments of violence?  psh...u said protection...why does it have to be violent?  Anything can be violent.  U can knock someone up side the head with a talisman and its still violent.  Violence is something people do, not things, wether it be guns or crystals, or talismans...In the old days people killed eachother with rocks before guns were created....I see no difference...ANYTHING can be violent so all of these comments should be deleted...Fact....delete me if u wish...but it sucks and is quite close minded...I didnt think u were like that...my bad...
  • the_infernal_optimist said on Sep 25, 2008....
I thought I was pretty clear up there before I had to bold it. And that what I meant by protection was excluding items intended as weapons (whether or not they're ever used as such). The other items I mentioned (talismans, pendants, etc.) *could* be used as weapons, sure, if you get down to it, but that's not their intended purpose.

I think my whole point was just missed completely there. Weapons are carried for protection by some, certainly, but I was looking for items with positive purposes, not items that protect through intimidation or the promise of defense by inflicting pain, if that makes sense.

My blog, my discretion delete-wise. I don't do it that often, but as I started out saying I would delete comments (I didn't add that part later, just bolded it after some people either didn't read or chose to ignore it) that fell into a certain category, I felt I should follow through. I have allowed several comments I didn't necessarily agree with or like in my two years-plus here, but when I start out asking for people to please not say X, and they say it, I don't feel that I'm being harsh to delete those things.

You have a right to say what you want, and I have a right to take it off my post if I feel it's not in keeping with the theme. I don't have a problem with mobil or you, starchini. I didn't want certain comments and chose to take them off. It shouldn't be offensive when I gave fair warning in advance.

Ok, guns, knives and other protective items aside. I don't anymore, but when I was younger, I used to carry several condoms in my wallet everywhere I went in hopes of getting lucky.

Sometimes it worked, and sometimes not........

i agree with quietone - my heart is my talisman

the heart is the most amazing organ in my body. i recommend reading "The Heart's Code" by Paul Pearsall, a Hawaiian heart surgeon. He has scientifically proven that the heart is supernatural, he has even proven that the heart is the seat of the soul because it  holds  cellular memory of even our past lives. i repeat, his information is founded in science. he has successfully shown metaphysical concepts to be  based in physical fact! gotta love that!

superstitious ideas ignore the fact of Free Will
  • mobil said on Sep 25, 2008....
C'mon andora........how silly you are, it's the brain girl, the most amazing organ in your body, well, mine anyway. It's your soul too, Paul sounds like a quack.
  • andora said on Sep 25, 2008....
the heart has 5,000 x the electromagnetic field than does the brain

the heart is not subject to the Newtonian Principle of entropy

i suppose someone who is un-educated could call the educated 'quacks' in order to validate the fact that they practice ignorance

oh, and the heart is the place that intelligence is supposed to align with emotional intelligence. unfortunately for most people they discarded emotional intelligence for the lonely tower of a brain turning in upon itself...got 'Bi-Polar' disease?
  • mobil said on Sep 25, 2008....
wow, I am a believer now andora, who would have thunk it? The heart not being subject to the Newtonian Principle of entropy? You've won over a convert lady.

Yes, I am bi polar, but now I am on your side........haha
  • andora said on Sep 25, 2008....
    whatever mobil

i wasn't trying to win you or anyone else over...i am interested in education and conversations that find agreement. for me that isn't necessarily about competition as it is about creating intimacy and agreement. in a condition of agreement we can change the world with progress, instead of bogging it down with bullshit ideas about who's right and who's wrong. there is uneducated thinking and educated thinking. the latter is painful...i hear the pain all the time. i personally think it is optional - before i educated myself, my life was a world of pain...like i said...optional!

Why doesn't pepper spray count? Not being a superstitious or spiritual person at all, I'm very practical in my charms for protection. I live in a busy city, and I wouldn't trust my safety to what I view as an unreliable superstitious instrument. Pepper spray is as much an expression of who I am as the talismans and pendants carried by others.

In any case, it's your blog, and I don't have to waste my time reading it or commenting on your posts in the future. Good day!

  • andora said on Sep 28, 2008....
i think your point is entirely valid antimatter

i'd like some pepper spray in the forest, but it is illegal on maui

i never carry a weapon that i wouldn't want to be used against me

really, guns usually hurt our loved ones and very rarely help the holder

i wouldn't want a gun for a talisman bc that tack projects violence into my future, so i live as if i am protected. my only requirement to survive w/o violence is to be honest. my talisman is honesty and a rule that i never over-ride the will of another. this is what helps me to feel protected and i live in the forest alone. thankgod hawaii doesn't have any predators except for men. funny thing is that when hunters find my camp they are more inclined to treat me like faeryfolk...they are very respectful
