I just saw the fuel truck come fill my tank.  I had it topped off a few months ago so I knew it wouldn't take very much.  I had told this company before don't come unless I call you!!! Well, I am glad I had a credit with them or I would be pissed.

I got 49 gallons at the tune of $3.77 a gallon for a total of $186.45  thats 49 gallons
What the hell are people going to do this winter!!! OMG we can't afford this.  And, I am sure the price will go anywhere but down the closer winter sets in.

I feel so bad for the elderly and young people just starting out.  the elderly will freeze to death for crying out loud.

I plan on keeping my thermostat down around 60 or lower.  I have lots of blankets, sweaters and sweats I can wear inside.  I will be damned if I am going to pour a bunch more money into the pockets of the people who are behind these inflated prices of oil.

Gas I have little control over, as we do need it for a vehicle to go to and from.. but in my home at least I have some control even though I will be chilly but warm enough to survive!

Hang on to the seat of my pants its gonna be a LONG cold winter ~

I worry about the poor and elderly too.  It's not so much a problem here as where you live, but it does happen.  You'll hear on the news during cold spells about the discovery of some unfortunate who either died of exposure or poisoned themselves by trying to use propane heaters/grills to keep warm.  I'm worried that my dad, who is on a limited income, will try to keep his place in NE a little too cool, etc.

quiet:  i have gas heat here, and last winter for one month, with thermostats on 67, my bill was ove $700.  i get the bills and i want to faint.
i don't know how anyone, especially the elderly can afford to heat their homes-
it's a sad state of affairs....

i know i will be looking at investing in a space heater or two

You can bet those big oil execs will be nice and toasty--in a tropical paradise somewhere probably!  We are keeping our tank filled early and will try to cut back also, but wonder how much good it will do.  We have a timer set on our thermostat, and also one of those funky heaters in the bedroom that looks like a fake wood stove.  It worked pretty well last year in combination with the thermostat only working certain hours of the day.  I wonder if they will care when the reports start rolling in of people freezing or dying of complications from the cold.

yup, our energy company put out a flyer about how the cost of gas will go up. shoot fire! like you said, i'll be wearing long janes and sweaters all winter long. but you know something, the nights are getting into the 60s and 50s already and it feels good so if i can hold off before i light the furance, i'll be better off.

Hi, hope you and yours are doing better/good! *smile* take care ~see ya

I remember hearing about how these kids built a large cardboard box for their elderly bus driver, just big enough to hold a small table, a lamp and a chair, then lined the inside with foil. Someone could sit inside the box reading a book or the paper and the lightbulb produced enough heat to keep the box warm, with the foil helping to keep the heat inside. The hard part was getting the foil to stick to the box.

uniquely ~ I worry mostly about the elderly myself.  Most are too modest to ask for help ya know.  I bet we hear of more than we'd like to think about the elderly this winter.  :(

secret ~ OMG  $700 for one month???  I would faint.  I sure do hope that things will settle down after this dumb election is over.

fraggles ~ oh, please just be very careful with those.  I don't like them at all.  I know they make them way better than they used to.  btw I used to read fraggle rock books to my daughter when she was a kid... she loved them.  heck I did too.

wombie ~ I know, I am going to hate hearing those reports, but sadly enough it probably will happen. I mean even a single or not single person with a small infant.. what are they going to do to keep that baby warm???

MeMy ~ the nights here have already gotten into the high 30's here.  No frost in my area yet, but it has hit in some places.

expendable ~ now that is a clever idea I would say!   That would be a great idea to keep an infant baby warm over the winter!  Hmmm... I have a small bedroom.. I wonder if it would work!

I don't know the exchange rate and we also work in litres here not gallons so if someone wants to do the conversions I am paying $1.45 per litre at the moment, it takes me $45 to fill my tank - BUT I don't know how big my tank is.
  • Lucytorial said on Sep 24, 2008....
Okay just found out, my tank takes 30 litres.
  • hotaka said on Sep 24, 2008....
Petrol actually dropped in price over here from 174 yen per litre to 163 or 161 depending on where you go. I don't know about fuel for homes though. Many people here us propane or natural gas. I'm not sure what i have but I remember last winter my monthly bill went from about 3,000 yen (about $30) in summer to over 10,000 yen January. Gotta cut down on the long hot showers! As for a cold house, I can take it but I worry about my wife and son.
  • tonibell said on Sep 24, 2008....
I got a heater last year that takes little electricity and is safe. It is a box with copper sheets in it that heat up and air blows through it. It cut my bill down about 50%. It depends on the size of your house or room your heating. I don't know what they're called but EDAN makes them. I ordered mine on line. check it out.

Lucy ~ Our gas for autos has gone down concerdable lately.  Yes, I think it is close to 4 litres to a gallon.  That is pretty expensive but not as bad as the European prices so I hear.  I think skald pays close to $8 a gallon (they also do litres).  Does it get really cold where you are?? Do you have to heat your homes? Shows ya how dumb I am about that land downunder.  :/

hotaka ~ wow, so it has gone pretty high there too.  worldwide.  Now, I just heard on the news they are trying to convice people there is a "gas shortage" as some of the places in the south are "out" of gas.  I don't believe that. Yes, it is a different situation when little ones are involved.

tonibell ~ that sounds interesting.  I may just look into that.  Thanks. Any little bit would help.

yea we will be chillin here as well this year. I also don't fill my car tank all the way up anymore, just enough to get me around. I figure, why let them have my money up front?
Sweaters it is...laughing about memy's long janes...funny!! hahahah
  • quietone said on Sep 25, 2008....
mamie ~ LOL I didn't catch that........ yup "long janes" and sweaters it is!!  I do the opposite with my truck, I don't usually let it get much below a quarter tank...
  • mobil said on Sep 25, 2008....
Hey Quiet......I used to deliver that stuff for 11 cents a gallon, those days arent' coming back real soon.

Have you looked into a pellet stove? They're also making electric heaters these days that use very little electricity, think about using one to suplement your main heat, might save you some bucks.
  • quietone said on Sep 25, 2008....
mobil ~ I think that heater may have been what tonibell was talking about.  Pellet stoves here you can't even order, out of stock and they don't even know when they will be available, that is how fast they are going!  I will just put on more clothes and line my youse with aluminum foil! LOL
  • mobil said on Sep 26, 2008....
Here Quiet check this one out, I am going to buy one tomorow

Use almost no electricity, great for folks on a budget to beat these high energy costs. Don't line your youse with foil just yet haha........
  • quietone said on Sep 26, 2008....
mobil ~ I think I saw one of these on the board at work for sale.  I will look to see if its still there.  why one would want to sell one beats me.  This sounds really good.  My whole house is under 1000 sq. ft.  ha!!  Thanks!  I am calling about info today.
  • skald said on Sep 26, 2008....
How long is this going to last?
  • quietone said on Sep 26, 2008....
skald ~ I think here in the US any way, it is going to get much worse before it gets better.  Our country is falling.  It is the first time ever or at least in many years that our money is worth less then our Canadian friends.  I am hoping after our election of a new president, things will start to turn around for us.
  • skald said on Sep 26, 2008....
Quiet Everything has always been much expeciever there than eveywhere else and now the krona is falling falling, falling. Eletic per month is twice what you were talking about
. Gas well . I  pay 106 dollars per week and I drive very little . The pound was 150 kronas when Gummi came to the U,K and it is 177 now. I don't know where it is going to end.
  • hotaka said on Sep 26, 2008....
I think the last time the Canadian dollar was worth more was maybe in the 70s. But I was just a lil' squirt back then so I am not sure. Yeah, now any money I get from the U.S. just goes into a U.S. account where it stills until I need U.S. funds. There's no point in exchanging it now, not even to Japanese yen!
  • quietone said on Sep 26, 2008....
hotaka ~ boy that is a sad state of affairs for us here!  The good ole US of A isn't used to this at all!  I guess it is a smart thing to do is let it sit and when it gets back up there, then do some moving it around.  Good to see ya.
  • Lucytorial said on Sep 26, 2008....
Quiet ~ nah not dumn cause it can get mighty cold in the southern parts but where I am its tropical, as in really tropical.  Our temps remain in general from about 16 to 30 year round (thats celcius not F) So no heating but a shit load of cooling.
  • quietone said on Sep 27, 2008....
Lucy ~ yes, I'd say that is pretty darn tropical for sure.  Too tropical for me! I guess some times we are just never satisfied with the weather!  LOL  But, I am glad that you don't need to buy fuel even though elect. can be just as bad sometimes.
