but that got me thinking that we're overdue for a poll so: what's your favorite thing about autumn?

I love autumn, to put it mildly. :-D So I'm excited!

I don't know which of these is my favorite: the refreshing cool mornings, the amazing leaf colors (not so much here with all the pine :-p but when I was in the mountains in college, I had to stop and pick my jaw up off the ground because it was so beautiful there!), or the anticipation of all of the warmth and laughter of the holidays right around the corner.

Probably that last one. :) Happy autumn, ed!

I love the sound of fall leaves under foot making that wonderful crunching sound. Though in Southern Cali I dont get much of that anymore. Back in Colo. the turning of the aspen trees... so beautiful

i agree with the crispness of the air...it's soooo refreshing!!

i use to live back east and loved the leaves, apple picking, apple cider, making soup and the simple pleasure of wearing a fleecy sweatshirt.

now i live in east tn where, although we have four seasons, it is very mild.  now i LOVE the fact that i don't have to worry about the impending two feet of snow that i'll have to shovel!!!!!!  Yay!!!

It's the crisp coolness of the air.  If I go to Stanford and walk on the campus there are a lot of trees that turn these brilliant colors.  Not so much the rest of the area.  And sweaters, lots of cozy sweaters.

That's three, but what can I say?
  • wombat said on Sep 22, 2008....
    That's it's still not winter yet....ha.

No, I love the blue skies and changing leaves---and those spooky-like nights with leaves underfoot on the sidewalks under a bright moon.  (don't like trying to get back into my winter clothes)

HAPPY SPRING!!!!!!!!! Don't you love the fact that its Autumn for you but the buds of Spring have sprung where I am.

My favourite thing about autumn is that with it comes this warm feeling of colder nights, a clean scent to the air... like tingles on your skin.

I love the fall colors.  The trees will be changing here soon.

It's also the celebration of the neo-Pagan/Wiccan sabbat of Mabon - a celebration of the season and of harvests.  So Happy Mabon!

  • FutureGoddess said on Sep 22, 2008....
I love the clean scent, and the smell of wood burning fireplaces when I walk in my neighborhood on cooler nights.  I love the colors - we have this one tree in my complex that turns this amazing yellow and then fuscia color in the autumn and a beautiful pink in the summer...

the freshness of it all.  like the beginning of sleep, then the dream of winter...to the awakening of spring....mmmm....the new beginning...then the life of summer...

hi there, infernal! those are all great things about autumnn, no question! i do love the fall foliage. :> remind me to tell you something funny my brother told me about the mountains sometime, btw. :D

namyogrl: hey you're back! good to see you again! :> mm, crunchy ground--that's one i hadn't thought of!

chris: hi, welcome to my blog & thanks for vistiting! yeah, the crispness of the air is something you don't get the rest of the year, is it? heh...not having snow would seem a pretty strong draw, i have to say. :>

u-i: it ain't about the quantity half so much as the quality, if you ask me. :> hey wait, you get that air quality thing out where you are? :D

wombat: hey now, it's still a ways until winter! [trout-smack!] :D

skald: and to you, thank you! :>

MJs punk: welcome to my blog & thanks for visiting! hey, that's a really good one! :D

silver phoenix: hi! you know, until you and namyogrl mentioned the crunchy leaf thing, i never really thought about that! :> and you're so right about halloween, if you ask me. :>

tobi-lee: you know, i keep forgetting it's completely the opposite where you are! and yeah, that clean scent--that's something so special about fall to me. :>

CW: good to see you again CW! the colors are extraordinary in autumn--it's a weird thing, it's like nature's last gasp at color before the monochromaticness of winter, you know?

FG: happy mabon! i didn't know that, thank you! there's a few pick-your-own farms around here and i'm looking forward to getting some freshly-pressed cider in a few weeks. :D hey, i want to see a pic of that tree--it hasn't started to turn yet, has it?

donaaaa: welcoem to my blog and thanks for stopping by! i like how you expressed that, quite poetic!

for me, the biggest thing is the crispness, as several of you have mentioned; but i also love the food: squashes of various kinds particularly always say autumn to me and i do like a good squash. heh...that figures, given half an opportunity i go on about food! i do think that with supermarkets & international shipping of food, we've lost some of our attachment to the seasonality of produce. i didn't have much feel for it myself up until a few years ago when i began making a concerted effort to be more aware of these things.

I LOVE autumn!!! My favorite holiday is Halloween, everything about Autumn is GREAT! But I would have to say the spicy smell of leaves on the ground and wood burning is my favorite. I also really love the sound of leaves crunching under my feet.

fragglesrock: hi, welcome to my blog & thanks for visiting! :> mm, a good fire has a smell like nothing else that just makes me happy. :>

i dont know anything about autumn... but i would love to experience it someday... ;-) hi bro!!!
  • phie said on Sep 25, 2008....
hmmm autumn makes me look back on the year, by the time winter comes things feel a bit stale, like its time for a new start, but autumn shows is like a warning that the year is ending- basically it tells me to hurry up and acheive what i wanted.

The leaves changing color--I miss that the most. Forgive the cliché, but there are only two seasons on my homefront: Hot and Hotter. :)

    Hey Ed,

Sorry it's been such a while since I have posted anything, and Happy Autumn! The things I enjoy most about this time of year is the sound of leaves blowing down the street on a cool night, right after the neighbor kids have gone off to bed. The smell of the coming change in seasons has always been pleasing, yet a little depressing at the same time. Looking outside, it is almost like God has turned up the sharpness setting, everything seems to be so much more defined.

Just saw this. I hope I'm-Better Late than Never! Fall has the best of all the seasons. It has crisp clean air, yet still warms us by the sun. It has trees full of leaves dressed up in their Sunday best. It has flowers that have reached their peak and add even more color. The grass is often a vibrant green. The sky has the brilliant blue of summer and the clearest of nights for counting stars. I think of Fall as a season of beginnings because of so many years of starting school with the first cool nights. That brings me joy. Fall has taught me to live in the moment. To enjoy all the beauty and pleasure it offers me today. We all know of the long cold deep winter ahead, but today we are rich with Autumns glory.
