Call me ignorant, but I'm mystified by people who say "you have no idea of the grief of having all this money." Or better yet, "being filthy rich isn't what you think it is."

They tell me "people are always after you and your money."

Well 'Oh horrors' I say. Wouldn't it be terrible if you were dealt this difficult hand in life?

I've read of people who were ruined by winning the lottery and wish they'd never won. Sickos.

They say money can't buy happiness. Bullshit.

I saw Michael Crichton in an interview and they asked him what he liked most about the wealth he now had. He said "Freedom. It buys me freedom."

People who couldn't handle wealth couldn't handle anything else in life either. Ask any wealthy person if they wish to dump the wealth and worry about how to pay the bills, about whether they'll be laid off and lose the house. Or if a loved one becomes ill and ruins them financially.

Money is the freedom from most worries. Money is the freedom to do as you wish, live where you wish, have what you wish. If you ever wanted to help others, money is usually the key. You could have a job with an office and secretary doing nothing but helping others if you wanted.

Write out those checks to family and friends. Make them happy too. I can think of a lot of worse things - and one is not being able to.

The problems that come with wealth I could handle. Or hire someone else to handle it.

Total freedom.

Ask me if I'd like to be butt-stupid wealthy.

Hell yes.

"Money is the root of all evil"-------------- idiots.

People are the root of all evil. Money feeds your kids.

I think what is meant by the saying, "money is the root of all evil" is that "love of money" (in other words, greed) is the root of all evil.

Money can't buy happiness - but it can buy plenty of drugs and hookers.

i know people always say money can't solve your problems-  but i'd like a chance to give it a shot, you know?
i believe that money does buy freedom-  and maybe you do trade one set of problems for another one.  i'm sticking to my story-  i'd sure like a chance to test the theory.

Money might not buy happiness, but it sure would solve a lot of issues facing the average working-class family today. Not having to live from paycheck to paycheck? I'd LOVE that. It really would alleviate a ton of stress, and less-stressed parents = a family with less tension overall (at least I would think so most of the time), so money might not solve everything, but it sure would make a lot of problems non-events!

    ok, you're stupid! (not really)

the actual verse from the bible is 'money is the root of all kinds of evil', and that's true. i find that people who are rich, spend most of their time worrying and bitching about their money. what makes them think they can handle that any better than the rest of us handle our other life problems? but you're right beyond. rich people don't have to deal with the choice of taking medical insurance or taking the more desparately needed cash in the pay check like i've had to this week. they don't alter their plans or lifestyle based on the price of gas. they invest in oil futures to make gas more expensive for the rest of us poor slobs! so i'm with you, rich people, go bitch to someone else about how the have nots are asking you for help, which if you truely did read the bible, you'd find that the reason you have money is to help those have nots. i'm not interested in your opinion.
  • Fallyn said on Sep 14, 2008....
trav, i thought the verse was "the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil"

i think there is something to be said for having money and freedom....and something to be said for not having money and having to figure out how to get things you want and need.

both have merits. and both shape the person you are.
you at kids who've grown up on trust funds with no one to show them what life IS.

Money may not be able to buy happiness, but it can sure buy you security, which can make life much easier. An otherwise happy person can certainly be happier if they don't have to worry about gas prices and bill collectors calling! But if you expect money to fix everything wrong in your life, then yeah, you're going to be disappointed. I just wish money wasn't necessary at all. The only reason I care about it, is because I need it to survive.

The Buddhist perspective is that desire is the cause of human suffering.. desire for material goods, sex, relationships... desire to eliminate pain or to scratch an itch.  And achieving our desires causes more suffering.. either from fear of losing what we have gained, or from the old desire being replaced by a new desire... I've scratched that itch, now what can I do about this headache?  I got this chick to marry me, now maybe I can find a little hunny bunny on the side.  Or a desire for MORE.  How many people do you know who are ever satisfied with the amount of money they have.... even the very rich?  It seems that wealth creates a desire for MORE wealth, and the more money that people have, the more ruthless they are in their drive to gain MORE, and the less willing they are to share what they have or to help others... I've seen much more generosity (proportionately speaking) coming from people who have next to nothing.

fallyn - it's not money that is the problem, it is the obsessive love of money that was spoken of. you see, the magic, the wisdom, the genious in that simple expression, does not make money the culpret. we all know that wealth will solve a multitude of problems. but the wisdom lies in the relentless pursuit of that single goal, which we are living through now, credit, mortgage, oil, pick your poison, it's all the down side of wanting money and power for it's own rewards.

et - you see it like me. i recently had an opportunity to offer a friend the little i had in excess. it was an important thing to them, and something i could provide. that's what money is really for. i wish rich people woud learn that lesson for god's sake! maybe if they did, i'd believe in god.

kruu - i have taken on many buhdist ideologies. they have been around for a long time, and have much to offer. i wish more people would listen to them.

sorry to gank your blog beyone

kruu- I was going to mention greed but decided to let it slide. I was more concerned with how money can turn one's life around.

phoenix- Yes. Part of the point. Big problems that, huh?

scara- I'm stuck on money can buy happiness. Not all of course, but plenty.

secret- I'd give it a shot in a second. And I'd trade those 'problems' in a second. Money would not make you and I unhappy.

infernal- Really, if you look at what you wrote, wouldn't money be buying a bucket load of happiness for lot of people? Only the mishandling of money brings people down. Loss of stress, paying bills easily, living the way you wish = more happiness.

trav- I agree with you. They bitch about it and extra money should be used to help others. With many people there comes a point where enough riches are enough. Those of us who have done without and realize what that life is, would I think, be more inclined to use it gracefully.

fallyn- My last line to trav covers your last line. And it is true both have merits. But there are also rich people who have worked very hard and understand the other side of the coin. Its the ones who refuse to realize their very enjoyable station in life I have a problem with.

ET- I would never expect money to be a cure all. It couldn't solve marriage and family relationships, nor would it help find the right mate, for examples. You know, in Star Trek they have done away with money and it works. I'd sure like for them to explain how they did that.
  • beyondtheveil said on Sep 14, 2008....
kruu- I'd bet you are right about more generosity coming from the ones who have less (proportionately). I've had many discussions with friends about why the drive exists in the very wealthy to have more and more when they and their children couldn't possibly spend what they had. I'm thinking its due to the making of more money becoming a game mixed with their vanity. As to desire, we always desire, some more than others is all. I couldn't possibly lose desire. I do desire less with age, however, and concentrate more on others.

trav- Gank? I think I learned a new word. Its ok if you gank my blog.

I think people are the route to all evil. money gets us stuff we've been taught we need. The rich use money as one of their expressions of love.
  • scipio said on Sep 15, 2008....
    No money - no worry
  • beyondtheveil said on Sep 15, 2008....
tonibell- I think I agree with all that. In fact many times I've used money as an expression of love.

scipio- That's right, so long as everyone's health is ok.

    LOL and thank you beyond
  • kruuyai said on Sep 15, 2008....
beyond:  Yeah, I don't think most of us ever completely liberate ourselves from desire, but I do admire people who can be happy with less.  That's one argument I've consistently had with my EC, because he always has to have the best.... he'll spend extra money to get the brightest white paper for his printer, even though he's the only one who's going to see what he prints out... he won't go on vacation unless he can stay in a 5 star hotel (so he doesn't go on many vacations, because he doesn't have much money and is in debt)... and I try to get him to see that he could be so much happier if he could be content with less, but I guess it's up to each of us to decide what our attachments will be.  I am happy with a lot less than the average American, but I require more than a lot of people in the world.  And I always want more chocolate.  :)
  • queenparanoia said on Sep 17, 2008....
so true.... money is not evil... it's the way you handle one that can make it evil...
  • Scaramouche said on Sep 17, 2008....
Oh - but I thought the great lesson of the Reagan years was that "greed is good."
  • beyondtheveil said on Sep 22, 2008....
    queenie- Exactly.

scara- The 'great lesson' was taught so well that Reagan followers have plundered the country and it's people to the edge of collapse. You thought right.

worldsky- No, that's true, but the freedom it buys opens avenues to many different kinds of happiness not otherwise existing if the proper path is taken.
