I got a haircut last week and it turned out absolutely awful.  I've been dealing with some natural curl this summer, which is a new hair development, and my usual straight bob just wasn't working for me.  So, I asked my hairstylist to cut it to work with the curl.  I had a photo, but she must not have paid attention to it.

When I left the salon, it looked ok because she styled it.  She took a lot longer than usual, but I thought that was because she was telling me all about her vacation.  The next day I tried to style it after my shower and would have loved to throw my hairbrush at her.  There was no way I could style it the same way she did.

You see, rain had moved in and with that came humidity to curl my hair.  I had explained to her...more than once...that it was my current trend.  I found that she had cut the back of my hair too close that it wouldn't curl, but left the sides long enough that they wanted to curl and separate from the back.  There was no blending.  She made my little problem worse instead of fixing it.  It looked like I had two different hairstyles going.

That's a disaster in my book.

I tried blow drying it straight and using a flat iron on it.  It would only stay straight if I gave myself a hairspray helmet.  Otherwise, half my hair curled on its own and the other half didn't. I absolutely hated it.

Looking in the mirror just made me angry.  I entertained the notion of going back to her and having her fix it.  Then I decided that I wasn't about to go pay her again to fix what she had done.

So this morning, I bravely took out my hair scissors I keep for bang trims, took a big breath and decided I could fix it.  Fresh from the shower and while my hair was wanting to curl, I combed it all toward my face and cut it at an angle that would frame my face.  I got rid of that asymmetrical point that would look great if my hair was bone straight.  It looked ridiculous as a ringlet looped toward my face. I snipped and flipped just on the edges of the haircut to make it work with the curl.

For once, I would say I did a pretty good job.  I took about two inches off in total to get it to blend with the back and work with the curl.  I don't look half bad.

I don't know what went wrong.  My hairstylist usually does a great job. This haircut sucked pond water.

At least now when I look into the mirror, I don't blow steam out my ears.

I could never ever cut my own hair but bad hair cuts, oh yeah, I know those! I am amazed that you just picked up your shears and went at it. Glad it turned out well.

    woman,
I was feeling brave.  I was fortunate. It was just a few easy snips along the edges.  I would never try an all over cut on my own.  Been there. Done that. Wore a hat.  :-)

that's cool that you were able to fix your stylist's screw-up! i don't even bother to go to a stylist and trim my hair myself. a little bit off the ends every once in a while and i'm happy. =)

CW:  You know what's funny (well not really) is that I remember the last time you posted about a bad haircut SO long ago!

Next time, get some Smoothing Lotion for your hair.  It works awesome with the flat iron, isn't as harsh as hairspray and the shine is TO DIE FOR!

Good for you cutting it on your own!  You're a very brave woman!

Yes - very brave for doing it yourself, but I think the stylist should have fixed it for free, especially if this is someone you see on a regular basis.  You already paid her for something you didn't want.

I am glad you are happier now.  Nothing like a bad haircut for perpetual aggravation.  At least now you can look in the mirror and find a little peace of mind!

    SP,
I usually avoid cutting my hair myself.  I don't have the greatest history with that.  But I just couldn't take another day of it. It probably wasn't one of my better impulsive reactions, but it turned out ok.

    Daily,
Yeah, I must be plagued by bad haircuts.  That earlier one was so bad though that I changed stylists.  This is the first bad one I've gotten from this lady.

Thanks for the tip about the smoothing lotion.  The whole point to begin with was that I wanted a cut to work with my hair, not one that would make me wrestle with it.  That's kind of what happened.

I don't know if I was brave or stupid, but it turned out ok.

    wishy,
I probably should have.  She was a little bossy about what I "should" do with my hair this time and I didn't want to go back.  I was seeing red and then became impulsive.  It worked out alright though.  No more steam coming out of my ears.

Hi - please forgive me but 'this haircut sucks pond water' is one of the strangest ways i have ever heard anyone describe anything.well done for trying to do it yourself - takes a lot of guts and determination.I had very long hair once upon a time and tried to do it myself on occasion- but never quite got it right. You wouldnt last long here in Durban in summer though. The temperature is in the high 30's(celsius) but the humidity puts it in to the low 40's and sends the hair in all directions!

You were very brave :-) I'd have made a complete pigs ear of it :-)

I usually cut my own hair most of the time as I have had no luck with hairstylists, it seems they always want to do what they want..... and its NEVER straight, always lopsided and I get tired of paying big bucks for something I can do almost as good as or better for free!  Good job.  I would have gone back and made her fix it for free.

    cuppajava,
It sounds really hot there.  My hair would surely have a mind of its own.

The sucking pond water is just a CW-ism.  The pond water here is murky and full of moss. So, it kind of fits with my mood.

    Batty,
I can live with it at least.

    quietone,
I didn't want to wait the whole weekend to see her again and I didn't think she would really change the style.  She's been resistant to that and it's not her hair.  Grrr.

My hat is off to you for always doing your own hair.  That's real talent there.
