Salon.com is commenting on a story from Tuesday's Times Union regarding the NYCLU complaints against three pharmacists in Upstate New York (two in Saratoga and one in Gloversville) who refused to provide refills (!) on Plan B.
Ok, for a moment, let's disregard the pharmacists and concentrate on the refills. I am all for open access to emergency care and honestly, part of me believes that an OTC solution may be neccessary. That being said, I want to think about the conversation that happened with the M.D. who wrote the original script, "Ummm...yeah...I am going to write a script for Plan B for you and..."
"Yes, Doctor?"
"Well, because I see that you have a pattern of engaging in risky behavior, I am going to give you five refills."
This is upstate New York. It's not like there are not a number of providers (including low cost providers who have Saturday and Sunday hours) that you can see. We aren't North Dakota. Why the necessity for refills though? Mistakes happen all the time and getting caught up in the moment happens as well. I am not denying that. I am not denying that these women their prescriptions either. One of the things that should happen with Plan B is a conversation with your health care provider and with M.D.s writing multi-refill scripts, that isn't happening.
It all comes back to MDs and the fucktarditude of the community.
