I do remember as a matter of fact. It was my day off, and also my birthday. I had stopped celebrating birthdays when I turned 50, two years before. My family knew I didn't want to be reminded of my birthday, so I didn't have to be concerned with cards, or Fed Ex deliveries, or phone calls wishing me "many more". I was having my first cup of tea of the day, around 8:55am, when my phone rang, the land line phone. At the same time my cell phone rang. "Damn kids!", I thought, "they're calling to wish me 'Happy Birthday' just to annoy me." No. They were calling to tell me to turn the tv on. I'm from NJ, across the river from the Twin Towers, but I live in NC now. I turned the tv on just in time to see one tower on fire with smoke pouring out of the windows. I saw a plane flying so low around the other tower. Katie Couric said, "That's a news helicopter", and I remember thinking, "You idiot, that's an airplane flying toward the tower!" And it flew into tower #2.
My son was driving to work on route 3, across the river when the towers collapsed. Route 3 is a highway, you don't stop or even slow down on route 3. This day people stopped and got out of their cars. They watched the towers fall, and they screamed and cried. He called me....I heard them.
There are people who would see this country brought to it's knees. There are countries who want nothing more than to see the US run by a weak government. There are politicians who would deal with terrorists by talking, placating, "understanding". There are people in this country who will vote for those politicians. I don't know what they're thinking.
i'm in jersey....so i was close to where it was all happening.
i was at the drive thru at dunkin donuts......literally at the window when the first plane hit. and i remember thinking it must have been a stray plane out of teterboro airport...and what a terrible thing.
i was on the highway 1/2 way to work when i heard the 2nd plane hit, and then i knew it was not an accident but some kind of attack.
i still went into the office, where a group of us listened to a tv in a common area....i remember it was like a horror movie.....only it was real. the plane at the pentagon, and the buildings collapsing, and seeing people actually jumping from them- you know how you turn your eyes at a gory movie scene because you just can't take anymore? that's how it was seeing people jump from the towers.
when the plane went down in the field in PA i left work and decided i was getting my kids from school. the schools were dismissing kids without question....something they never ever do.
i just wanted my family in one place in case it was the end- that's what i thought...this could be the end.
a teacher from my kid's elementary school was on the PA plane that went down.
