DR BOOTHE - EYE LASIK: While this is not widely recognized by consumers, excimer lasers also can correct astigmatism by smoothing an irregular cornea into a more normal shape.Dr. Boothe, the most common cause of poor vision results from poor refraction of light due to distortions on the surface of the eye. Before each laser surgery for eyes, a doctor uses an aberrometer?s laser beams to produce a 3D image of the actual shape of the cornea on a monitor. This helps him find the exact area where re-shaping of tissues should be done.
Dr. Boothe, laser surgery for the eyes involves scraping or lifting the cornea and using laser beams to re-shape the tissue beneath it. This has been proven t be effective for astigmatism, near sightedness and far sightedness.

regression - A return to the original refractive state. In PRK the surface layer or epithelium is removed prior to or as part of the procedure and then the deeper corneal stroma is reshaped with the cold laser treatment. During healing both the surface epithelium and the deeper corneal stroma can reshape and reform at different rates. Computer generated PRK treatments assume a normal "Bell" curve amount of healing for both layers and thus normally "over correct" the refractive error in order to finally heal with no refractive error and no need for glasses. A small percentage of patients will heal faster and more vigorously than expected and will thus regress or "heal" their planned over correction back past no refractive error to their original type of error. This regression phenomenon occurs with both myopic and hyperopic corrections. It occurs more commonly with smaller ablation diameters and with abrupt transition zones at the edge of the laser treatment areas. Some surgeons have suggested that the epithelium overgrows as if nature abhors a vacuum and overreacts to fill in the space. Steroid medications can usually be used to regulate and control regression.

Snellen Chart - The standard eye chart with one large letter at the top and lines of progressively smaller letters. It is used to measure central vision.

Trifocals - (TRI-foh-kul) Corrective eyeglasses with three powers of correction: far distance, near distance, and intermediate distance. Typical reading glasses are bifocals which use most of their surface to correct for far distance, and have a small area at the bottom edge which corrects for near distance (reading). Trifocals also have a middle area which corrects for intermediate distance. Bifocals and trifocals are usually prescribed for people with presbyopia.

Dr. Boothe, LASIK is an ambulatory procedure; you walk into the surgery center, have the procedure and walk out again. In fact, the actual surgery usually takes less than five minutes, and you're awake the whole time. Occasionally, the doctor will give a mild oral sedative beforehand. Even though the procedure is relatively quick, this does not minimize the importance of having it performed by a highly skilled surgeon with proper equipment because LASIK is a very delicate procedure. You also should have someone accompany you to drive you back home afterward.
Dr. Boothe, most people don't feel pain during LASIK surgery. Your eyes are first anesthetized with special drops. The doctor will have you lie down, then make sure your eye is positioned directly under the laser. (One eye is operated on at a time.) A kind of retainer is placed over your eye to keep your eyelids open — normally, this is not uncomfortable.
