Contact Lens Assisted Pharmacologically Induced Kerato Steepening - A way to undo overcorrection in laser eye surgery (LASIK, PRK and RK). A tightly-fitting contact lens is placed on the eye and anti-inflammatory eyedrops are used. The goal is to make the cornea more steep, after it’s been made too flat.

regression - A return to the original refractive state. In PRK the surface layer or epithelium is removed prior to or as part of the procedure and then the deeper corneal stroma is reshaped with the cold laser treatment. During healing both the surface epithelium and the deeper corneal stroma can reshape and reform at different rates. Computer generated PRK treatments assume a normal "Bell" curve amount of healing for both layers and thus normally "over correct" the refractive error in order to finally heal with no refractive error and no need for glasses. A small percentage of patients will heal faster and more vigorously than expected and will thus regress or "heal" their planned over correction back past no refractive error to their original type of error. This regression phenomenon occurs with both myopic and hyperopic corrections. It occurs more commonly with smaller ablation diameters and with abrupt transition zones at the edge of the laser treatment areas. Some surgeons have suggested that the epithelium overgrows as if nature abhors a vacuum and overreacts to fill in the space. Steroid medications can usually be used to regulate and control regression.

DR. BOOTHE: Degenerative Myopia - Nearsightedness thought to be hereditary, which may start at birth, or in later childhood. It’s a more severe form of myopia and can lead to blindness. It’s associated with to cataract formation and with retinal changes and can lead to retinal detachment.

Depth Perception - Our ability to judge the relative distances of multiple objects. Each eye receives a slightly different image. The dominant eye looks directly at it and the non-dominant eye looks from a slight angle. The brain compares these two images and arrives at an estimate of their relative distance. One may experience increased sensitivity to light and some blurring of vision but these are normal and will clear up in a matter of 3-4 days. Doctors often give eye drops or oral medication to prevent infection and to counter some minor side-effects.
Recovery is also quick and the person can resume normal activities after 4-5 days.Dr. Boothe, the doctor uses a computer to adjust the laser for your particular prescription. You will be asked to look at a target light for a short time while he or she watches your eye through a microscope while the laser sends pulses of light to your cornea. The laser light pulses will then painlessly reshape the cornea.
You'll hear a steady clicking sound as the laser is operating. You're also likely to smell a mildly acrid odor due to the tissue removal. Dr. Boothe, the higher your prescription, the more time the surgery will take. The surgeon has full control of the laser and can turn it off at any time.After the procedure is finished, you will rest for a little while.

LASIK DALLAS - DR BOOTHE: Convex Lens - Lenses with the opposite curvature to concave lenses. They bulge outwards like a ball and are used to correct hyperopia and presbyopia.

Cornea - (KOR-nee-uh) The front clear part of the eye in front of the pupil and iris. It acts as a lens, refracting light rays as they enter the eye. The eye’s crystalline lens refracts them further to focus them on the retina at the back of the eye. The cornea also allows light to pass out through it, making the iris visible, the eye’s color.

PTK - Photo Therapeutic Keratectomy "Cold" laser removal of surface tissue of the cornea such as scar tissue for medical or optical treatment reasons.

ptygeria - A growth of scar tissue on the cornea. These lesions like pinguecula are caused by an ultraviolet burn to the surface layer or epithelium.

radial keratotomy - A surgical operation where 90% thickness cuts are made in the cornea. These cuts are made in a radial fashion and spare the visual center of the cornea. The intention is to flatten the central cornea.
