Once upon a time I lived with a lot of cats. When mine had kittens we reached all the way up to 13 at once. This is a lot of cats to have in one house at the same time. Especially when you can't let the cats out. So it was inevitable that there would be some spraying.

In fact there was a lot of spraying.

Cats crave stability. They are very insecure creatures in that way. First we traumatized them by adding 7 kittens to the mix. Then we traumatized them by subtracting 6 kittens from the mix. Then we traumatized them by splitting them betwixt us and each moving twice in 2 months. Then the ones with me got traumatized again by the addition of a very jealous and active Westie to the household. (For those that don''t recognize that's a Terrier.) Our cats became VERY insecure in their lives and cats spray when thats the case in order to assert themselves and mark territory.

Now I'd like to point out that cat piss is this >.< far from impossible to completely get out of something. I worked hard at it but I'm human and cat piss is cat piss. My clothes are being washed in white vinegar, my mattress is febreezed, baking soda'd, and bagged in a vinyl slip cover. I febreeze daily in general and apparently I still can't get rid of the smell. I say apparently because I can't smell it.

The room mate, who is also the land lord, can though and he does not like it.

So this is teh sux. I'm dealing with a phantom order I can't smell, can't find, and am having a devilish time getting rid of. It's looking like in order to make it go away I'm going to have to wash EVERYTHING with white vinegar and then color safe bleach, replace all my funiture, discard all my boxes, as many of my books as I can do without, and then replace the mattress as well.

That's $500 and a lot of time and effor to boot for something that I only know of through the annoyance of others. It is as frustrating as it is annoying. This is a pain that is going to linger.

Aw, man. You're right; it sux and its difficult to remove. Then again...maybe the dude just doesn't like cats.

cat urine glows green under a black light, which might make it a bit easier for you to find if you have missed any spots with the white vinegar.

[blushes] Aww...shucks... LOL. I am a fount of odd trivial information. Sometimes it comes in handy. And well, I do have three furry monster kitties myself. Mine just tend to puke up hairballs on everything under the sun. There is nothing worse than hoping out of the bed to the blare of the alarm clock only to have a bare foot land on a still warm squishy hairball.... [shudders]

Have you looked into any alternative ways of getting the smell out? Enzymatic cleaners and such? It might be worth a try if it means saving your furniture. My poor puss had a bladder infection several months ago, and he couldn't help peeing everywhere he went. Fortunately, I managed to keep him in the laundry room until the antibiotics worked. It wasn't easy to get the smell out of there, though, even though it was all on hard surfaces. We threw out the towels he used for his bed while he was sick. I feel your pain!

i have a cat now. i've had a cat previously. and nothing in the world could ever convince me that having more than 2 or maybe three is a recipe for anything other than a lot more housework. ed

Does anyone else actually notice the smell? I was always told not to use bleach or other strong cleaners as it doesn't actually remove the smell and the area becomes identified by the cat as the litter tray but to stick to the white vinegar solution. Have you asked at the vets as I imagine they must have a fair bit of clearing up to do there.

Other people have commented on it in the past. The bleach is to be sure there is nothing *else* contributing to the ordor. I no longer have the cat. My furniture, such as I have, is cheap to begin with. Easily replaced it is. It's just really, really, annoying is all. ;)

The smell of cat urine never goes away even if you can't smell it anymore. Your cat can still smell it and with multiple cats, then the other one has to pee over it. It is a vicious cycle full of piss.
