I'm having laproscopy surgery in a couple weeks for the second time for my endometriosis. I have a wedding 3 weeks after the surgery in which I am a bridesmaid and I was wondering what healthy foods to eat after the surgery. The first time I had surgery in highschool I gained like 5 lbs and I can't afford to do that this time since my dress is being made right now and can't be altered again. I have been exercising and losing weight the past few months for this event and I would hate to try on my dress and it doesn't fit. Any healthy suggestions so I can stay fit before the wedding??
Answer:
Women with Endo seem to benefit from a diet that largely consists of (daily) fresh (i.e., bottled) water intake; 3-4 servings of fresh, green leafy veggies; 2 servings of red/orange veggies; 2 servings of fresh fruit; 2-3 servings of whole grain (rice, oats, quinoa, buckwheat, etc...many Endo women are intolerant of wheat, so you might want to exclude that); at least 30 grams of high fiber (may come from the fruits and veggies); complex carbs such as legumes; and lean proteins. Avoidance of caffeine, alcohol, smoking, and products which contain heavy metals like copper (which has been shown to be associated with higher estrogen levels in women with Endo as well as increased cyst formation, and thus increased symptoms) has also been preached among the community members. Intake of supplements like vitamins A, D, C, B6, and E along with calcium, magnesium and zinc are also recommended. The idea is to also stay away from foods high in preservatives, dyes, fat, "bad" carbs, and sugars (sodas, processed foods, etc.). The upside, in addition to potentially relieving any continuing symptoms you might have with your Endo, is maintenance or even loss of weight after your surgery.
