Kim Hye-soo is a modern day beauty for Instyle POPSEOUL!

I am not a fan of Asian women going blond; in most cases I think it looks unnatural, even though Kim Hye-soo is one of the more beautiful examples. However, I think they made her look too Caucasian in these InStyle Korea photos. Her eyes seem to be the only Asian-looking features left on her face.

Generally IMO for Asians to look good with blond hair, it needs to have shades of red and light brown intertwined. I once saw a magnificent example of this in a hair magazine. But when I asked my hairstylist if I could achieve the same result, she told me that the hair would have to be completely bleached of all its color first (so that it was white); then brown would be applied, then red and blonde highlights. Needless to say, this would require regular, costly maintenance. I decided to stay with my natural hair color.

In my life, I've only known one or two people who looked better in a different hair color other than the one they were born with. When I first moved to a big metropolitan city, blond was all the rage. Every brunette out there, it seemed, wanted to be blond. This included a lot of Latinos and Asians, too. While I understood the novelty of it, I wonder if they were all trying to look White? I hope not.

I think it is better to appreciate one's natural beauty, than to try to be like someone else.

She's lovely, but the comments read like left-handed compliments. Everyone says she looks good, but nothing like herself. That sounds as though she's unattractive in real life, doesn't it?

my daughter is 18, and she's had about 6 different hair colors so far this year-
from sandy blonde with pale highlights, strawberry blonde, brunette, fire engine red....you name it, and she's been there!

    we laugh about it.

personally i like a shade lighter than her natural one the best-  unfortunately, she likes the deepest darkest browns...

    Bad.......I think she is gorgeous......stunning...
I am guilty of having forgot many moons ago the natural color of my hair....lol..
I was born with a typical Italian dark brown hair..

During the years i experimented with auburn red, eggplant deep blue, dark red, ash blonde,  jet black, strawberry blonde...right now i am settling with a dark honey blonde....

I think playing with hair colors is fun...specially when you find the color that works good for your skin tone...

But you are right...i live in Texas..80% of the Latino girls are some kind of blondish...it doesn't work right for many of them because their terracotta skin color...i think many of them would be better in a dark red brown...

Twyla, that's exactly the problem. She doesn't look "real."

Secret, I had a friend who did that, too. She couldn't make up her mind what color hair she wanted, and was always changing it. I don't mind people experimenting with hair colors, even though I must say that those hair coloring products smell horrible.

As for me, I tried to bleach my hair once, and got nowhere. You couldn't tell I had lightened my hair any unless I was directly under sunlight or strong light.

Ginger, my husband's half Italian, too. My MIL put blond highlights in her hair, which looked really good on her.

In general I think for girls with darker skin tones, highlights are better than coloring the whole hair blond.

Really? Half Italian? ....and what about the other half?...
We say that in a mix the Italian side always take over.....lol..

Yes, dark skin and highlights work a lot better...more sophisticated look for sure..

My MIL is full Sicilian, FIL is Irish/English, so my husband's a mutt, as he likes to call himself. And yes, since he lived with his mom most of his life, the Italian side is dominant.

However, he often gets mistaken for being Jewish, too.

Wow......Italian and Irish.....now this is an explosive combination....lol....

  • Twylarants said on Sep 06, 2008....
I looked for pix of Kim Hye-soo and she is gorgeous, but she doesn't look like those blond haired shots at all. Is that her real hair or is it a wig?

Ginger pictures? You mean the boot pictures, huh? What we want to see are Ginger and Grape pictures, ma'am, not pictures of knees.
  • gingersoul said on Sep 06, 2008....
    Twyla.......nooo...those knees are sooo yesterday....lol...

Go to my last post, lady.....and well......pictures of Mrs Gingersoul and Mr. GrapeKoolaid will be posted at the right time and under the right circumstances.

A press conference will be set up accordingly......l...LOL....

Lol, my MIL is actually really nice. Hubby loves her to death, and her lasagna, too. Ironically, when we went to visit last Thanksgiving, she burned the lasgna---her first disastrous mistake ever in her cooking career. Needless to say, she was flabbergasted, but we happily ate it anyway. A lot of turmoil had occurred in her family and I'm not surprised that her mind was elsewhere. She's a talented artist, seamstress, and has worked as a DJ, too. She made part of my wedding dress.

Twyla, I'm looking at Kim's pics and they don't look anything like her InStyle pics, either. She looks a lot better in the other pics. Maybe InStyle did a lot of airbrushing?

I think she has a very pretty face but her hair looks like crap. She doesn't have to Americanize to be attractive. In fact, it's a very bad move for her because it wrecks her look. But maybe that's the style these days so it's a good career move even though it looks awful on her.

It harms the hair if it is often bleached off and beached again.

I do think the black hair Asians have is beautiful anyway.

I have never bleached my hair. I promised my grandma not to do it . That may sound very old fashioned.

Ifbno7, Very true. It was probably a career move. In Korea, I read that using plastic surgery to look Westernized is all the rage.

Skald, good for you! Your hair is probably a lot healthier, anyway. I went to a salon once and they commented on how good my "virgin" hair was. I guess they were used to having to deal with a lot of brittle, damaged colored hair.
