While I like the history channel and PBS sometimes (depending on what is on) I have to drop my chin and say I like (for just plain old watch this and ignore the rest of the world tv) Frasier, Project Runway, MASH, Friends, and any old re-run that takes the present out of the equation for a few minutes.  I'm not completely brain dead, though.  I will watch an hour of anything that tweaks my mind about the history of man, the mysteries of the universe, and the odd---like UFO's, Hitler, DNA, and even a romp about a wild animal being spied on by a nature lover.

    Ok---Frasier is the most fun....ha.

trav- I'm on track where wombat is for things like History channel. But for a tv show I like CSI- Las Vegas & Maimi, and Law and Order especially SVU.

beyondtheveil:  Can you explain to me why I love to read books about this stuff, but get bored with the tv shows about them?  I read the most horrible books about serial killers, how they catch them and whatnot.....and can go right to sleep.

But I rarely like to watch a show about this same thing!  Reading is ok, but I don't like to spend an hour watching.  (I did like Bones, but haven't even watched that lately)

    I think I am weird.
  • beyondtheveil said on Sep 05, 2008....
wombat- I can't answer that question because I like both. I've read far more non-fiction in my life than fiction, so I really like to read about it.  But...they can show me on tv in one day that would take me a month to read.
  • wombat said on Sep 05, 2008....
Oh.....we like stretching out the drama....
  • travelr712 said on Sep 05, 2008....

wombie - ok, ufo's i'm a little burned out on. it just seems like the same ole stuff, ya know? animals, i always turn the channel. other than that, i agree with you whole heartedly. frasier is the bomb!

beyone - i just can't see it about those shows. what is it about them that you like?

wombie #2 can i try it like this? when you read a book, you can interperate the story the way you want. there's so much more in a book. but when you see a show, it's a condensed version, you have to accept the interpretation the writer and producer present. you're kinda stuck in the way they say it should be. does that make sense?

beyone - ya, i've kinda given up reading for that reason too. wombie wants to work harder at it than us? commends to you if that's true wombie

  • wombat said on Sep 05, 2008....
Good to know I'm not the only one who thinks Frasier is the bomb......

And as for the other, I think it's that I can control the book.  (put it down, pick it up), but that was an impressive response!
  • travelr712 said on Sep 05, 2008....
ty wombie, but i know the value of books. ya, it is the control, that's true. they're your friend when you want them to be, and they'll wait patiently till you want them again. but i always liked the element of getting lost in one. picking the character i identified with, watching the story unfold, just for me, just in the way that made me, oh, interested, excited, angry, there's magic in writing.
  • wombat said on Sep 05, 2008....
You just described the whole thing in one paragraph.......about reading vs. watching and also about writing.   Great comment there.
  • travelr712 said on Sep 05, 2008....
ty wombie, maybe i should be a writer? :-P
  • uniquely-ironic said on Sep 05, 2008....
no huge favorites.  I like Saving Grace and The Closer.  I also like some of the CSI shows and NCIS.  Earl is cool.  I fall asleep listening to Two and a Half Men.
  • travelr712 said on Sep 05, 2008....
earli is cool! kinda an everyman trying to make peace with his own life, ya know?

men men men manly men wahoooaaaooohhhooooo!
  • wombat said on Sep 05, 2008....
We're all writers.  Just mostly not getting paid for it.  Mostly, I am just fishing in the dirt.
  • travelr712 said on Sep 05, 2008....
what kinda bait do you use for worms?
  • wombat said on Sep 05, 2008....
    I use worms for bait.
  • travelr712 said on Sep 05, 2008....
    worms are canables? that fits!
  • Twylarants said on Sep 05, 2008....
Monk, Psych, and Chuck crack me up, but nothing is as funny as Frasier. I tried Kelsey Grammer's new show, but didn't like it.
I don't watch any reality shows, but have to admit that I love Tori and Dean...I don't know why.
Wombie, I love true crime novels, too, but can't stand any crime shows except Bones. I loved City Confidential when it was narrated by Paul Winfield.
The Naked Archeologist, History's Mysteries, Mystery Diagnosis, football if it's the Giants, Vikings, or the Packers, baseball if it's the Yankees, the Mets, or the Twins.
Doctor Who, Kyle XY. I'm going to try to watch the American version of the British show Life on Mars, but it'll probably suck...they usually do.
My husband likes Lost, I think it lost it's way in the second season. I like Heroes so far but they could go the way of Lost if they're not careful.
I watch Fox News and CNN only because there is no Libertarian News.

  • wombat said on Sep 05, 2008....
Yes, and some worms are also butterflies...

It used to be the Sopranos (it was like a religion, especially since it was on Sunday night), but that ended, and then it was Rome, but THAT ended, then I switched cable companies and went from HBO to Showtime, and I got hooked on Califonication (the new season starts Sept. 28th!)  I like Califonication for three reasons... it's about a writer (I'm a wannabe writer), I like David Ducovny's character, and it has nudity and sex.  Other than that, it's weird shows like Most Haunted, or shows like Monk, Psych, Gene Simmons Family Jewels, American Chopper (OCC Baby!...I live about an hour and a half away from the store.. it rocks!)... then it's anything that catches my eye.
  • silver_phoenix said on Sep 06, 2008....
saving grace, the office, sons of anarchy, the riches, burn notice, mad men, ncis, dirt...i could probably think of more.

trav- I like the characters (especially csi-las vegas) and many of the stories are very good. I also watch re-runs of Star Trek-Voyager & Next Generation. And I keep watch on the Western channel for good shoot'em ups.
  • BurnedOut said on Sep 06, 2008....
definitely 24...the best show on Earth!!  Jack Bauer is the man!
  • travelr712 said on Sep 06, 2008....
twirley - wow, that's quite a list! and allot of good stuff there. i would say that i think the family guy is as funny as frasier tho, i just love that show!

wow wombie, you have such a way with a phrase!

silver - i didn't get the office at first. the character of steve carell just put me off, but i'd only seen a couple episodes in mid season. when they came back in reruns, i started watching from the beginning, and now i'm hooked! i also really like burn notice, i started watching that because i'm a huge bruce campbell fan. i'm interested to see where they take the show, i hope they don't screw it up.

    LOL rc and twirley!

beyond - i've been a huge star trek fan since i was 12 and they were syndicating tos. i've liked every series except DS9. i think maybe it was too 'soap operaey' for me? i still need to see the last 5 episodes of enterprise, god i wish they woulda given it the full 7 years! but i think the best series of all of them was voyager.

burned - i've never seen it. i thought it was an interesting concept tho, 24 hour long episodes about 1 day in someone's life. is it still like that?
  • BurnedOut said on Sep 06, 2008....
travelr...yeah, still like that.  New season begins in Jan.  Every episode is like a edge of your seat ultimate suspense thriller.  Once you're hooked, you're addicted.
  • travelr712 said on Sep 06, 2008....
that's what i've heard burned. i think it's been on a night that i've had school, so i never got a chance to watch it. i've heard the president character is quite a... well... character :-)
  • silver_phoenix said on Sep 06, 2008....
trav- i was the same way with the office. but now i totally get it. all the other characters make up for steve carell's. yeah burn notice is awesome.
  • travelr712 said on Sep 06, 2008....
yeah silver, especially the relationships between dwight/angela and jim/pam. i know it's soap opraey, but i really wanna know how they work out!
  • lfbno7 said on Sep 06, 2008....
I watch Big Brother, Survivor, Apprentice, MMA events, Contender Muay Thai, Meerkat Manor, Anthony Bourdain, Andrew Zimmern, The L Word.
  • gingersoul said on Sep 06, 2008....
OK....The Office, Anthony Bourdain (naturally), The L word (hey, Lenny maybe we should watch tv together?....lol..), Weeds.
Then Grey' Anatomy, anything from Travel or Discovery or History Channel. Sundance documentaries and movies plus the Green series and Abbey Road.

My uber alles fav was Six Feet Under....hey, writers, go back on you ass and give me another 25 episodes...now!!

I think i want give a try to Pushing daisies and definetely i will watch the new series with Christian Slater and his double lives.
  • travelr712 said on Sep 06, 2008....
i don't think i've ever seen any of those lfb. what is anthony bourdain?

i watched grey's anatomy for awhile ginger, and now i'm kinda into scrubs. i loved the first season of six feet under, but i kinda thought it got a little too serious after that.

anybody seen corner gas? i think it's great, at least so far. here's a link to the website.
  • lfbno7 said on Sep 07, 2008....
Anthony Bourdain is a chef from New York City. His restaurant in NYC is called Les Halles. He is a host on the Travel Channel. He goes all over the world, often to places you'd never think of going, wayyyyy off the beaten track, and eats and socializes with the people.

Ginger, you come over when L Word's final season starts, okay? From the ads for it, I think that Jenny Schechter's original girlfriend is coming back. They were my favorite couple at the beginning of the show, before they took Jenny's character in such odd directions.

I forgot to mention my favorite tv series of all time by far, no contest. Because it's just in reruns. That would be Lisa Williams: Life Among The Dead. It's a privilege to be able to see a truly gifted spirit medium having conversations with dead people. Her ability is sharper than John Edwards, though he's good too.
  • gingersoul said on Sep 07, 2008....
    Lenny.......its a done deal....:-)
I was wondering how come you didn't mention Lisa Williams...its your top fav show.

Care if i link Bourdain to Traveler? It gives me just one more occasion to drool over Anthony....lol...

Trav~ I love Corner Gas! My husband doesn't get it, but he doesn't get Scrubs, either.
I quote Wanda all the time, and I get away with it because no one I know watches it.
Best episode has to be the one about the dirty crack hoe!

  • lfbno7 said on Sep 07, 2008....
That's a great Tony Bourdain video, Ginny. I see you like the New Yawk sense of humor.
  • gingersoul said on Sep 07, 2008....
    Lenny........i love Anthony's humor for sure......:-D
  • travelr712 said on Sep 07, 2008....
thanks for the link ginger. i've never seen him b4. just on a quick look, he kinda impresses me as a non-gay graham kerr :-) but he seems pretty cool from this video. and i agree with him, what ya gonna do, tell the locals 'no thanks'?

i just love deadpan humor twirley. it's a little like an american version of monty python, know what i mean? i can't wait for the reruns (amazingly enough) cause i've only seen 3 episodes, and i want to get the whole story there. i can't even remember what the character names are. but i loved the one where the old fart thought the cafe owner had a thing for him!
  • silver_phoenix said on Sep 07, 2008....
trav- oh yeah, for me it's all about pam & jim! i cannot wait to see the new episodes.
  • travelr712 said on Sep 07, 2008....

How does two and a half men the intolerably dismal and unimaginative sitcom with Charlie Sheen possibly attract so many viewers? Every episode is just a repeat of the previous one, forcing me to wonder if i've woken up in the film 'Groundhog day.' let me...
