So my first blog will be about something simple and a common, everyday subject discussed over a cup of coffee at the local cafe. Of course, i'm talking about the issue of the existence of a God. Now, I personally believe in the existence of God but have never gone to church. My parents were Buddhists until coming to America where they had to stop their practices in order to start a business and raise their family, a business that required 23/7 maintenance (the last hour used to take care of the kids of course). However, I truly believe that God exists and that he loves us all, and so on.
But this entry won't be about my own beliefs. I'm here to examine and argue the issue of His existence. First of all, let me say that I won't (nor can I) bring up every single arguement that has been brought up on this issue. I'll just be covering one idea on each side. Also, I'll be covering the issue of God as viewed by some Christians or border agnostics.
First of all, one of the most logical reasons as to why there is a God comes from another question; "How did the universe begin?" The current school of thought is the big bang theory, where an explosion of energy and matter eventually led to the existence of the universe. But where did this energy come from? If it came from nothingness, what initiated the explosion? Though the big bang theory has been argued in itself, however, regardless of any theory of creation, something had to come from nothingness at one point. That, my fellow bloggers, seems to be one of the major arguements for God's existence that has caught my eye.
As for the opposition, many philosophers have considered it throughout history (probably mostly so with the Existentialists). Those who argue against His existence, one of the main complaints about the prior proof is that it cannot be proved because we do not know as of now, for a scientific fact, that God or any other being or "powers that be" created the universe. If there is no proof, there can be no claim. Furthermore, some add that, if God were existent, where is his proof of his intervention? The Bible is said to be proof, but the book is written by man for man (of course, the opposition to this is that the Bible is the word of God). People claim there is no God because humans create their own fate (studying and working hard, planning their own futures, carpe diem, etc.) and that there is nothing of higher power that controls or interferes their lives except one's self. One opposition to this, of course, is that people who think that God is not apparent in life is out of touch with one's spirituality.
Now, the point behind this post isn't to open a can of worms, but just to get some of the thoughts that have gone by.
