Yes, she's a very pretty girl. Yes, her stage persona and demeanor is sultry and cool and seductive.
But what I'm impressed by is her musicality. Unlike so many jazz musicians who have been misled that chops and technical virtuosity = passion, Jones follows the beat of an older drummer - a aesthetic that decries chops for chops sake and simply says, "Only play the one note that says something. But play the shit out of that one note."
The uninitiated say things like, "She plays without emotion" and things like that. They don't get it. Jones isn't about running stupid scales just to prove she can - you hear me, Mariah Carey? - she's about singing the song and letting the song say what it wants to say.
It's an older, wiser, more mature perspective on music. So she can pull off sad, poignant, powerful songs - and breathe new life into old standards and pop songs and country.
I think there's something to be learned there as an analogy to life - I just haven't sifted through it far enough to be able to clearly articulate it yet.
