Its so funny how something that we aren't really born with can affect us in such a big way. They can direct our paths, make us question ourselves and our motives. They can make us smile, make us angry, makes us cry, laugh, love, and makes us frightened. They can bring a sense of nostalgia over us or a feeling of peace. Our memories are what makes us who we are in life....now and later, for better or for worse.
When we get right down to it, memories are very powerful....almost as powerful as love. Yes, I believe that love is an extremely powerful force, but I also feel that memories almost rival love for that place of honor. No matter how hard we try, we can't keep them under control, we can't banish them, or tuck them away. They are always there, and eventually they will make their presence known.
If we are lucky, then the majority of our memories may only bring a smile to our face or a sense of well being. You know what I mean, the memory of our first kiss, or the excitment of starting a new job, or moving out to our first apartment, and so on. But we all have memories that we would rather never have experienced, the ones that may bring a tear to our eyes, a twinge in our heart, or a rumble within our soul. The ones of heartbreak, of embarrassment, of anger, and of fear. We can say that those kind of memories are just a fact of life and that they are unavoidable.
Which I believe is true too. But there are those memories that haunt us and affect us in such a negative manner, that they affect how we function in life, how we handle certain situations, and how we deal with others. These memories are so strong that they can cause a person to freeze up, hide away, or give up. These memories though, can be used to benefit the person, by giving them strength, understanding for others, and empathy.
Memories, good or bad....Beautiful or ugly.....Peaceful or angry....Funny or scary....They are us and we are them. They will always be there regardeless of what we do. Even I have my memories that haunt me, affect me, disrupt my life....but without them, I wonder who I would have been and would I have liked that other person?????
