Tomorrow is both a beginning and an ending. It is the first day of school. But it is the last time that I will join the children who rush in with new backpacks loaded with fresh pencils, crisp paper, and a bouquet of sweet crayons. It will be the last year I am presented with the gift of young, eager faces. Scrubbed and proud in their new clothes. Facing me with both anticipation and a little fear of the unknown. The last year that I will be given the chance to make a difference in their lives. Tomorrow I will do what I love and am familiar with and then, in a few short months, I will be like my students. Facing a new part of my life with both anticipation and a little fear of the unknown as I retire. There may not be much sleep tonight.

I hope you aren't thinking "this is the last time"....

    Hi Woman,

I've read enough of your postings and comments to know you are a genuine person and a person of character.  Please don't let this last semester cause you to look upon your responsibilities sadly but try to let it be the "bouquet of joy" to climax your special career.  Your career has truly been one in which you can remember children you have helped to progress in ways not many of us can.

Also think about what is waiting for you just beyond this semester.  Begin to plan what you will do and let the excitement build to fuel you right through the next few months.  Make this one of the most joyful times you have experienced.  As we need to be reminded sometimes, life is what we make it.

My best to you at this special time.                             ---Jim---

Secret~Thank you dear. It WAS a nice day and the only time I thought about something being the last time was when it was something disagreeable. That worked!

Expendable~Thank you. The day was full of joyful excited children.

Skald~Did you send your grandchildren off with a hug and kiss? I will sometimes be sad these last few months but I am truly excited about my retirement and starting a new chapter in my life. Thanks for your sweet words.
  • woman said on Aug 22, 2008....
hinana~Oh yes. Buy a new box of sharp crayons. Breath in their aroma and then enjoy drawing something lovely. Good luck to you this year.

Jim~Thank you for your kind words. And I will indeed find joy in this closing chapter. Afterwards I have many plans that I am excited about. But still, there will be moments.

    Hi Woman -

I hope you had a wonderful first day.  I know you are focused on your retirement as the end of your career, but teachers are never really finished with their work.  You have planted a lot of little seeds in your time in the classroom, and as those children go out into the world, those seeds will grow in ways you could never imagine.  You've built quite a legacy, Woman.   Hugs - Wishy

  • woman said on Aug 24, 2008....
Ed~It went just fine. And. This is a blessing. There was a little problem, as there always are, to which I could say~Oh well, I won't miss THAT. I suspect the year will be full of ups and downs and then I will be on a new ride!
