I had a poignant experience last night at the Chicago Dancing Festival. The Lar Lubovitch Dance Company showed me something I had never seen before. Apparently Lubovitch, as one of the ten best choreographers in the world (according to the New York Times), decided to make a social statement in his "Concerto Six Twenty-Two". And so, last night I witnessed my first gay duet.
At first when the two male performers came on stage and linked arms, I thought: "How interesting, a 'friendship' dance." But a series of movements led me to believe these men were more than just friends. I must say, it was amusing to see a man lift and twirl another man like he would a woman.
I was intrigued, so I looked into this piece. Apparently, it debuted in 1986, so I'm decades out of the loop regarding the art of the gay duet. However, now that I've experienced it, I'm a bit surprised it's not more common.
