We arrived in Berlin at 10.30 in the evening. My friend Eka was waiting for us, Also her sister Inge.
We drove in the dark home to Zhelendorf and met the people. It was good to meet them all again. We go far back. I was there in that house first when I was 16. Here are a few pictures from the first days and then I will show something from the city and the places where we went.
Adda was mostly shopping but we did other things too. It is so much inexpensive to shop here and she needed new cloths for the children and her self.

Eka´s house is always full of people. Adda is standing there. This house was bombed down in the war and Ekas grandmother Anna build it all by her self again. Eka was in Thuringen until she was 13. Then they came back.

Adda, Udo, and Manal Eka's eldest grandchild . She lives in the US and was staying there, learning German and doing well.

Adda, I and Udo, Eka's brother who was also staying there at the time and he did a lot of garden work, also repairs. He is very handy. He lives in Erlangen.

Eka's mother which I call aunt Thea is almost 104 years old. She reads every day, watches her programs on TV. does crosswords and more. she knows a lot and is very intelligent.

Berlin is to me, life of rails, S bahn, U bahn , buses , trams and so on. I bought for each of us a weeks card, for the public transport and we used them well.

You really keep your self in training going up and down the stairs at the railway stations in Berlin. This is our home station.
berlin 2008 033

Next part was Steglitz, that is it used to be, our part Zhelendorf belongs to Steglitz now. We went shopping there and this is the black city hall of Stegliz which is really a landmark, you know you are in Steglitz when you see it. It is now empty and there has been talk of tearing it down. I hope they don't do it. In Steglitz I wanted to take Adda to a restaurant in a tower called the Beer pencil but alas it had been closed.
berlin 2008 027

We were invited to Walle our friend who lives 20 minutes away if you walk. We went through the garden colonies which are between Walle and Eka and we enjoyed the vegetation
berlin 2008 037

One of the garden houses on they way. There are thousands of them all over Berlin and they give pleasure to city people. Eka and Walle live in a neighborhood where there are big gardens and don't need one of those.
berlin 2008 041

We had a lovely evening with Walle and Dieter. There we are in the garden eating German evening bread as they call it. Enjoying the summer. When we went home Walle and Dieter did not want us to go alone. Not because of dangerous people no, because of wild hogs that have been a plague in Berlin lately. We insisted on going alone.
berlin 2 2008 004

In beautiful moon light we walked home and met no wild hogs.
berlin 2 2008 005

There are still places in Berlin where they have gas lights and I think they are so pretty.

Hi Mariah. How are you? I hope you are well. I am still feeling well thanks. And thanks for the wishes.

skald, Berlin looks to be a beautiful city.  I'm so glad you didn't meet up with any wild hogs.  (I have to admit that it made me laugh a little, but I'm sure it is not at all funny if you meet up with one.)  Eka's house is charming, and the gardens are beautiful!  I'm glad you got to spend time with aunt Thea.  Was the weather warm there?

I'm happy that you had a good trip, but I am very glad to see you here again.  :)

  • skald said on Aug 20, 2008....
Mimi.  Eka has a daughter called Mimi but she was on holiday so I did not meet her. It was nice and warm, not too warm .The last day about 77F but well sometimes you were getting in and out of cloths because the north wind in Berlin can be very nasty.

I am also glad that I am home again even thought it is nice to be there and Tante Thea , that is aunt Thea asked if we would see each other again and I said yes, She seems to think so. I hope so.

Eka's house is so pretty and the garden is very well kept.  Is evening bread the last meal of the day?
  • skald said on Aug 20, 2008....
Uniquely.  Evening bread is the last meal of the day and a lot of Germans drink beer with it, not all. It is a very nice moment. I really like their tradition, which I have known since I was 16.

It is a great job keeping the garden the way it is. I wish I had a house in Berlin with a garden but as I can't be there there whole time this is not rational. Who would take care of the garden, if I had the money for a  house there. Still this has been a dream of mine for years lol

Hello skald I've been wondering where you've been. I'm typing this as the pictures load. Berlin, wow it seems to be a beautiful place. skald you really do a good job presenting pictures and sharing the information about them. I'm really glad Eka's gandmother chose to rebuild the house it appears to be quite useful today. I love the staircase and the property setting it's perfect for enhancing the value of the home site in general. Thanks for taking us along skald it was a very educational journey you took us on with much beauty. Hope you did'nt have any encounters with wild hogs. Take care of yourself skald we'll talk again soon.
  • skald said on Aug 20, 2008....
Cayenne,  You take care too. I should have told you all that Eka enhanced the roof and build a new floor there. The house used to be like before the war and is like that finally again. This house has, housed many people. The family and friends and it is really a house with a big soul like my friends there. Thanks Cayenne

Wombie.  Good to see you again. The stairs and that flight are new and Eka had it done. The house was like that before it was bombed down, probaly not with stairs like that though. Thanks a lot.
Me. Hi and good to see you too. Thanks a lot. Big smile on my face.

As always Skald, your pictures give us a look at new and interesting places.  I particularly like the gas light.

    Hi Skald,

Thanks so much for the pictures.  They remind me of the Germany I once loved.  It is so beautiful.  I am an old guy and it's been so long since I was there.  So nice to see Eka's mother (Aunt Thea).  Such a nice family gathering.  I can just feel the joy that prevailed.

Thank you so much for sharing with us.  You are a real doll.

Thank you so much for bringing us along on your trip. The pictures and your words make me feel like I am visiting too. I hope you have felt well on your trip. You look as if you are!

Skald, you sure do get around.  Wild hogs in Berlin.... well now I've heard just about everything.  Actually, that doesn't surprise me much.  When I lived in Szczecin, which is only a couple of hours from Berlin, there were wild hogs in the forests there..  We even saw one when we were on a bike ride once.
  • skald said on Aug 21, 2008....
Jim.  So good to see you and I am so glad that I can give you a bit of the Germany that you once knew. Yes, Tante Thea is a wonderful woman and she tells me so much about the past. I really like to link the past with the present. Thanks.
Woman.  H i and good to see  you too. Yes, I felt well on my trip thank you and I am so glad that I can give you a part of my experience. Thanks.
Kruu.   Yes, Walle showed us a picture of wild hogs many together and they have their babies and get aggressive. I have seen one once there in a forest named Grunewald but now they are coming to peoples gardens and ruining everything. There is a big part that looks like a forest on the other side of the garden colonies. Thanks Kruu goo to see you.

Great pictures Skald....how wonderful to have such a memoir of family trips and vacations.
Tell me, what does Aunt Thea take, or has been taking, to look so good at that age?  It's wonderfull to be so healthy at that age.  What a wealth of information into the past.   I remember my grandmother telling me stories of the days of horse and buggy.....before everyone had cars.

Queen.  My aunt Thea is a wonderful woman. She is so intelligent and yes she smiles and knows how to enjoy life.
Rolling.  Yes, it is wonderful what the old people can tell us and I did also enjoy the company of my grandparents that were born in 1895 and 1896. They taught me so much. Aunt Thea has the same birthday as granddad but was born 1904. Well in reality she does not take anything. She is just bless with a strong body and mind. Thanks RC

Skald:  I really enjoyed this!  I can't believe that she's 104 years old!  I wouldn't stop asking her questions!  She looks amazing!  Nothing like you would think a 104 year old would look like!

Rebuilt the house by hand!  OH MY WORD!  Amazing!

Did she not come back until she was 13 because of East/West Berlin?

Daily.  It was hard to get back and it took years. Yes, this house and family has a big history and I am always learning more.
  • dailyachesandpains said on Aug 26, 2008....
So much history!  I wish someone in my family was 104 and could tell me about our ancestors!  I realize you're not directly related, but it has to be pretty neat to be able to ask to hear stories of way back when!  She's lived through it all over there!
