No doubt you're reading this because you're either confused by SEO or you're still looking for the best advice you can find on the subject.
Before we go on I need to tell you something. I don't claim to be an expert at SEO, but I do know more than the average person you could say, in fact in 5 years of studying the subject I've personally only spoken to one person who knew more than myself, and I don't work full-time in the industry, in fact I can't even build my own website. But I can promise you, if you read this article and you are willing to take high level responsibility for your own success you will benefit greatly from reading on.
But what I do have is an incredible gift for building businesses off-line and I've realized my gift is due to experience and insight few people have. My gift is an appreciation and skill of very high level measuring.
Measuring is the foundation of all knowledge, it's the feedback loop that reveals the merit of your ideas. Ideas is where all success begins. Ideas from learning from others who have gone before you is where a student of SEO can benefit.
There are great teachers on SEO in the world. However there are conflicting points of view as well, you would have found by now if you have been a student of the subject for long. So who do you believe?
My own background has allowed me to achieve tremendous outcomes for dozens of clients I have personally mentored over 11 years and my skills have been systemized so that I could teach others to achieve the same rapid and dramatic increases in business growth for my clients.
The secret I have is the way I measure and can crunch volumes of data.
The key to finding out what works with SEO is to read as much as you can, then to use software to crunch the data to find out the truth of what really works for you and what doesn't. This is what I have found out myself from 5 years of research into SEO.
Next comes the BIG question of what data do you need to crunch?
From 5 years of testing all aspects of my website I've found the most critical element of rankings in Google is your page title. If your page title doesn't contact exactly the key word phrases that are ideal to your line of business and website then nothing else really matters on your site. Google won't rank you and you won't be found in the top 10, 100 or even 1,000 sites. So this is the biggest element of your success by far. What you put in your H1 tags must also match your website title, if you use H1 header tags.
Look into it if you don't know what H1 header tags are, as they help your rankings to know.
With your title I've tested short and long combinations of keyword phrases and found if you use over 8 it's pretty much a waste of time. So the key is to use 2 or 3 groups of key word phrases in your title only. What phrases you use is another big question.
Being able to crunch thousands of keyword phrases is critical to finding the niches that is perfect for your site. How you need to do that is software. Software is the future of business success. It allows massive amounts of research to be performed in minutes what would normally take weeks. You can go to websites like worktracker to do some of the data crunching there but the best solution I have found by far is to use Brad Callen's Keyword Elite. This sensational program does it all for you. It can generate a keyword phrase list using one word or more and generate 2000 results in 15 minutes.
Then it can tell you what is quite extraordinary information about these 2000 results. It can tell you how many searches are performed in Google in a month for all of these keyword phrases as well as how many sites are competing effectively by having it in their homepage title. Then it can give you two ranking systems for the use of the keyword phrase in your title. One that compares number of results of searches to competing websites and the other is a KEI figure, which you can learn about at wordtracker.com.
Once you have narrowed down the ideal phrases to use in your title of your home page from this research you can then build your website around the 8 or so words you would write into your title. The title key word phrases need to be used on your home page so Google likes your site and ranks it. Keyword Elite also does analysis of Cost Per Click of Google Adwords so you can see what you would pay for certain keyword phrases. You can also spy on competitors ads as well, and do all kinds of other amazing things with this program. If you own a website and don't buy this program, you don't value your time, or you don't want your site to rank well!
Next once you have a site built with a great title, good keyword phrase density on your home page you then need to tweak it, as until now it's been great theory but now you have to put it into practice. So now I recommend you buy another software program by Brad Callen called SEO Elite. This software does all kinds of amazing things too, but one of them is to test your rankings in Google, (Yahoo and MSN) to see where you site ranks for any keyword phrase you want to put in.
You can test your rankings every day if you like to see changes as you tweak your title with changes to your keyword phrases.
Another critical aspect of ranking in Google is your page rank. Getting it up by linking to other sites certainly helps in Google and SEO Elite can find specific sites to link to and it has an emailing template program to email to these sites after you've found them in the program! If that doesn't get you excited by the time saving nothing will!
You can check on any competitor's website as well with any keyword phrase and as Brad Callen very wisely once said, you don't have to have the world's best optimized site, you just need to have a better optimized site than your competitors! If you can find what sites are linking to your main competitors, which you can with SEO Elite, then you can email them and ask them to link with you, then you can rank as well, and better with some of the great stuff applied that is mentioned above, or by learning more about the other features of SEO Elite I haven't mentioned!
Check it out as if you're at all serious about getting good rankings for your website, these two software programs are the best I have seen. And as I say to people, if someone who teaches you anything about business growth strategies doesn't teach you how to measure your results as part of the education or recommendation, run away from them fast!
You'll find Brad Callen's software very easily, as he ranks extremely high in search engines. So I'll leave you to find out more yourself. From what I have learned just by using the two software programs, as mentioned at the start, I have only found one professional off-line that knows more than me, I don't feel I know much on the subject.
