i swear, i'm gonna have to take a day off work to catch up on SC...only 9 pages of my users behind, though, so that isn't quite as bad as it could be--last week, at one point i think i was up to 15-16. however, my my conversations pages are pretty ugly i bet, i haven't looked at those meaningfully in over a week!

so thanks all for the birthday wishes! saturday was lovely, went out to visit my folks, spent time with family, had a lovely meal at a favorite steak house and some nifty presents. sunday we headed off to my in-laws' place, spent time with family, had a lovely meal off the grill & again, some nifty presents. then we got home, i enjoyed most of a bottle of my favorite wine (beaujolais) and finished off a nice weekend most enjoyably. :>

yesterday i woke up to the sound of my alarm however, so i didn't even have time to check in & wave hi in the morning, as i normally might do on a monday morning.

work continues to be interesting, and right now i'm trying to figure out how to use my vacation time, as there's not much of it this year and in the new department, my preferred spots are already spoken for by others. guess i'll have to come up with something else!

i didn't realize that clone wars opened last weekend: we'll definitely need to address that particular oversight. right now i'm thinking maybe tomorrow night. :D

the mrs and i will be doing our own celebration of my birthday, just the two of us, friday. we're going back to that restaurant where we had car trouble a few weeks back--because up until the car wouldn't start, it was turning out to be a wonderful evening: great food, loved the ambience, impeccable service. heh, i'm grinning my head off at the memory. :D

random thought, apropos of nothing: i find two expressions strange: "have a good one" (i suppose the "day" is implied?), and "many happy returns", i have utterly no idea what the etymology of this expression is.

in haste,

ed

hey Ed. thanks for the update. My weekend was filled with family events as well. We celebrated my nephews graduation from Pepperdine U. and I saw family that I haven't had time to keep up with in years! It was fun, we danced and sang karaoke...we are a strange bunch!
I hope your dining adventure comes off without a hitch this friday, sounds great. Is it a philly locale?
How you ever keep up with your reading/readers, I will never know.
Glad work is intriguing and that you are having a blast....that's what summer is all about! Um, have a good one!

Belated Happy Birthday!  Somehow that one got by me.  I'm glad you and the Mrs. are celebrating your birthday privately at the "good restaurant".  Nice to have that time together and all.

My weekend was nothing spectacular.  Got some cool old photos, took some beach pictures, lots of housework, etc.

    hi ed,
Hope no more car troubles. I was singing that.
My weekend was mainly with my mom. She's not doing too well lately.
I have to do the do.
    btw, Happy b'day.

Sounds like you had (and are still having!) a great birthday!  Yea, I would say "Have a good one" just means have a good day/night whatever.....Many happy returns?  Heard it often, of course, but it does sound vague.....Just wishing that whatever good you do, comes back at you as well?
  • Expendable said on Aug 19, 2008....

It's short for 'many happy returns of the day' or 'may you have many more happy days'.

Glad you had a happy birthday.

Hey Ed, Happy Belated Birthday, what a birthday weekend and more celebrating still to come, that is the way to live. Have a good one... I asked someone about this recently. Now I just have to sit and ponder Many Happy Returns...

Well a belated but happy birthday to you. Sounds like the weekend, with lots of good food, was just what you could have wished for. Don't worry about the Clone Wars. I only heard there was an actual movie two weeks ago. I really don't spend much time in the real (news) world.

Many happy returns: Something they don't say at the customer service counter in department stores or electronics shops.

Interesting how these sayings become part of our day to day living and one has no idea how it got started.
Glad to hear that your weekend was a good one.    :^)
Another exclamation (?) that I've heard people say and it makes no sense to me is when something has been misplaced and they're looking for it desperately after some time and in fustration they exclaim " when I find that thing it will be in the last place that I look " .....
Whom do you know that, after finding something, keeps on looking for it ?    :^p

"have a good one" we are talking whatever one it is you intend to have.  A good meal, good night, good snog, good kick up the arrrsss anything you wish.  As for birthday's I'm sure its used because people don't really want to assume that you are going out? having sex w the misses? *-} or simply couching it.

mamie: hey wow, that's great--congrats to your nephew! what's his major? uh-oh, there was karaoke?! danger, will robinson, danger! :D no, not a philly locale on friday--although i posted a blog entry about another philly restaurant a while back and the chef appeared on iron chef america this past sunday! it was so cool to see him! keeping up w/ my readers/reading always requires a little time but when i can afford it, i do love it.

    wait--have a good what?! :D

woman: it was definitely a lot of fun. i think we should all have birthday weekends once/month! who's with me on that? :D

u-i: thank you! and i wouldn't call that "nothing spectacular", myself: the photos were really nifty! :>

day2day: thank you! i'm sorry about your mother, though: if you don't mind my asking, what's the trouble?

wombat: yes, i did, thanks! now that's an interesting idea--maybe it's a karmic thing, then! certainly seems plausible!

ex: is that what it is? OK, thanks!

TG: hey there missy, long time no see! thank you!

vm: thank you, it was! and i'm working on it--promise!

namyogrl: my thanks! i think wombat's idea has some merit btw, re: that expression. :>

SG: nice to be seen, and thank you: me too! :>

CW: well, i think that everyone's world is: it's just a matter of seeing them. indeed, didn't you blog a similar sentiment yourself a week or 3 ago? :>

hotaka: bwa-ha-ha-ha-ha! definitely the funniest possible reading of that phrase! thanks re: the birthday wishes, and yes, it was just about everything i could have. :D i knew clone wars was coming since a few weeks ago myself, when i saw a poster for it in a theater. :>

rollingc: excellent point re: that exclamation! actually, years ago, marilyn vos savant once said the same thing in response to a reader asking why that was true. i think that's pretty darned cool. :>

tobi-lee: heh... a good snog, a good something else...well, those certainly work! :D
