What was the last concert you went to?

I haven't been to see a popular artist in ages, but I've seen some good live bands at county fairs and festivals this summer.  They were no one you would know.

Last night I saw one of my favorite bands, Los Lonely Boys, on Jimmy Kimmel Live.  They've snuck out a new CD under my radar that I MUST HAVE soon.  However, as I listened to them play live I realized how much I would love to see them in concert.  I can get lost in their guitars. I think it would be a musically awesome experience.  If they come close by, I'll have to see if I can get a ticket.

So, that gave me an idea to blog about.  :=)

Who would you like to go see?

I love going to concerts.  The last one I went to was Crosby, Stills, and Nash about a month ago.  And of course I am very nearly a Keith Urban groupie.  :D

I would love to see Elton John in concert.  I'm sure there are others.  A few that I would like to see will never happen.  I would have loved to see Sinatra in concert, for example.  And the Beatles.  When I saw Paul McCartney in concert a few years ago, I had a lifelong dream fulfilled.  Best time I ever had with my clothes on.  ;)

cw- The last live concert for me was Elton John. The one I'd like to see next is Heart again for the third time. I watch for them to appear in Vegas.

    Mimi,
I think I would like Keith Urban. I'm not big into country music, but I like him.  I agree that Sinatra would have been good.  In that same vein I would like to see the dreamy Michael Buble.

    beyond,
I would love to see Heart.  They are another band with great guitars and the Wilson sisters have great voices to compliment them.

CDub, you would love Keith Urban.  More and more, his music does not sound like country to me.  I don't know why they classify it as that.  His guitar playing definitely qualifies as rock, to me.  I don't know a lot about that Michael Booblay, except he has a cool name.  :)

    Hi CW,

I'm with all of you on concerts.  Love 'em.  The delightful MissM named some great ones.  Since I'm so old I've had more time tho.  The last one I went to see was Judy Collins.  Not everyone may remember her since she was from the '60's but she is still performing even though she's in her late '60's.  Probably her most popular song was "Send in the Clowns".  Tom Brokaw mentioned her in his book, "Boom".

One special one I remember was "Alabama".  They were the last group the family heard together before we went our own ways.  Used to live in that part of the world and always liked their "stuff".  Another favorite is James Taylor and went to see him when he came home to Chapel Hill(NC).  I think entertainers perform a little more special when they are before their "home" group.

Please let me mention one more favorite I came to love while I lived in NC.  That's "Doc" Watson.  Unless you like American folk music, you may not know him but, imo, he is just the greatest in that field.  He is blind and has to be led everywhere but he needs no directions when it comes to his music.

Thanks for letting me add my thoughts.

    Mimi,
I have a couple of Keith Urban's CD's.  Maybe they call him country since he can play the banjo.  :-)  He's very talented. I definitely see why you love him.

I like the way you say Buble.  :-)  He sings a lot of the old standards.  I just love him.

    Jim,
I do remember "Send In The Clowns" by Judy Collins. That's about the only song of hers I'm familiar with though.

I've actually seen Alabama a couple of times.  One of my friends is a big fan and I tagged along.  They put on a really good show.

Doc Watson doesn't ring a bell with me.  What would one of his popular songs have been?

Alabama puts on an awesome show.  I've seen them several times.  Ooh, and James Taylor is a good one.  I've seen videos on YouTube with Doc Watson.  It was bluegrass music with Ricky Skaggs and Earl Scruggs.  Bluegrass reminds me of my childhood.  My grandparents lived in the hills of North Carolina.

    Mimi,
For not being a country music fan, you wouldn't believe all of the country artists I've seen in concert.  lol  My friend I usually go with is hardcore country so I just tag along for the experience.  I would say the two best country performers I've seen are Kenny Chesney and Martina McBride.  I also saw Garth Brooks just before he got really big.  It was really evident how much he loved entertaining at the time.

Ricky Skaggs is not one of my favorites, but I do like some of the Blue Grass Allison Kraus has done with band Union Station.

I have seen Martina McBride.  She has an amazing voice.  I did have a chance to see Kenny Chesney and Keith Urban recently but I turned it down because LeAnn Rime was also on the bill, and I cannot listen to her.  She just annoys the daylights out of me, for no good reason except that she opens her mouth and strange indecipherable sounds come out.

I've only been to one concert.  Meat Loaf, about 12 years ago.

    I sucketh.  :(
  • Mamie said on Aug 15, 2008....
I would love to see Meatloaf in concert! The last we went to was to atlantic city to see sherly crow, it was an excellent show, but she has done better shows in the past. I have seen Billy Joel, the Eagles, Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks by herself a few times. I love Mariah Careys voice as well as celine deon but I am unsure whether or not I would go to their shows.
I HAVE NEVER SEEN KEITH URBAN AND I THINK IT IS HIGH TIME TO END THAT --put it on my bucket list!

CW: I love the Los Lonely Boys. Do you have their Live at the Fillmore CD?

I haven't seen any popular artists live in several years--probably at least 10.

The last live concert we went to was a symphony performance at our zoo; they have a free summer concert series there.
  • CreativeWoman said on Aug 15, 2008....
    Mimi,
I'm not so crazy about that Rimes chick either.  She thinks she's far sexier than she is and that just turns me off.  I saw Kenny Chesney just before he started doing all those beach songs...those gag me.  I do like his older stuff a lot though.  His show was really high energy and I liked that.

    Eilan,
You don't suck, my dear. I think it would be fun to hear Paradise By The Dashboard Light live.  It's got to be a great audience participation song.  At least I know that at dances around here the whole place erupts with "Stop right there!  Before you go any further do you love me...."    I need to go to a lot more rock concerts than I've been to.  That's the music I really love.

    Mamie,
I would love to see Stevie Nicks.  That sounds like fun. One of my pet peeves is that country stations are playing the Eagles these days.  Doesn't that just sound wrong?  lol   Maybe you should road trip to Mimi's and head out to see Keith.  I'll be standing out by the mail box if you want to pick me up on the way.  :-)

    Zayda,
I don't have the live Los Lonely Boys CD, but after seeing them perform on Jimmie Kimmel last night I think I would like to have it or maybe the DVD.  I definitely want their newest one.  I had it in my hands when I was out shopping and put it back.  Silly me.  I was being too frugal. I could have been enjoying it right now.

The concert series at the zoo sounds really nice.

    CW,

Some others by Judy Collins were:

      Both Sides Now

      Blowin' in the Wind

      Cat's in the Cradle

Unless one was into Doc Watson there wouldn't be any of his "stuff" known.  One exception I remember was "Tom Dooley"-made popular by the Kingston Trio.

  • silver_phoenix said on Aug 15, 2008....

hey CW! the last concert I went to was a year and a half ago. i think i'm due for another concert. i saw Stevie Nicks in Vegas. It was awesome. I wasn't too far from the stage and a lot of the time it seemed like she's would look at me as I was singing along! =P

I've seen her a few times in concert. A couple times Sheryl Crow was with her. I've been to a Sheryl Crow/ Michelle Branch concert that was at an outdoor venue close to the stage that was awesome too!

next i'd like to see a good rock/alternative band play. not sure who, but i'm not too picky!

  • Lucytorial said on Aug 15, 2008....
Because I live in the middle of no where in particular like a city I don't get to see big bands but every day there are live musicians at our local pub in the main town, tonight I'm going in to watch a band called the "Gorilla's' they do live covers and stuff so not exactly fresh but still its great to here live music.
  • Mamie said on Aug 15, 2008....
you got it cw: picking you up at your mailbox....memy is coming there as well, now we just have to discuss this with Keith...I am sure we will know where to find mimi if his band is in her town!! too funny, this is becoming quite the reunion! I bet if Keith knew, he would bring us in stage!
  • CreativeWoman said on Aug 15, 2008....
    Jim,
I do remember the Tom Dooley song.  I didn't realize it had Blue Grass roots though.  I learned something.  :-)  I hadn't realized that Judy Collins had done some of those other songs as well.  I remember Harry Chapin's version of Cat's In The Cradle.

    SP,
It sounds like you get awesome seats for concerts!   I really, really like Stevie Nicks. I could listen to Landslide over and over for hours.  There are a long list of bands that I would go see too. :-)

    Lucy,
I agree that it is always great to hear live music.  :-)

    Mamie,
The more, the merrier!  Wouldn't it be a blast?  Mimi could be our...ah  hemm...tour guide.  :-)

    CW,
What other types of music do you like?
  • CreativeWoman said on Aug 16, 2008....
    machershey,
I really like a wide variety of music.  The exception has been country music recently.  Due to events in my life a few years ago, it lost me when so many of the popular songs became so sad about losing loved ones.  I enjoyed it before then, but I didn't think I needed to tear up every time I tuned in to a country station so I stopped listening.

I love Los Lonely Boys, George Michael, Bon Jovi, Johnny Lang, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Steve Miller Band, Journey, Collective Soul, Maroon 5, Madonna, Fergie, Justin Timberlake, Prince. U2, B-52's, Tom Petty, Donna Summer, Chris Daughtry  and many, many more.  I better stop here though before I get carried away.  :-)

I can find something to like in most music.  I listen to different types depending on my mood.  Sometimes I want a funky beat to dance to and other times I just want to bask in great guitar solos or wonderful voices.

Thanks for asking and for visiting my blog.

She does have many great ones.  That's for sure. I've got her greatest hits CD and now I'm going to get it out and give it a listen. :-)

jeez, the last live music performance i attended must've been, in all seriousness, a concert of classical music near my parents' place: there was a violinist in the area who has played with the new york philharmonic. i seem to recall some mozart, and i want to say chopin, although i don't believe chopin penned many pieces for the violin...

but before that--and we're going back quite a ways now--bluestraveler, when i was still in college and when they were still getting started!

    Hi CW!

The last concert I went to was a dream come true for me.  It was Friday, August 15th and it was at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Connecticut.  Testament, Heaven & Hell (Black Sabboth with Ronnie Jame Dio) and Judas Priest.  The dream started waaaaay back in 1974, when I saw my first Priest video on what was then, a very young MTV (remember when they used to have only music videos?)  Ever since then, I've wanted to see them live.  I missed my chance in 85 by 4 days, when I had to leave for basic training in the Air Force.  Then, 4 years later, I missed seeing them by 3 days in Japan, because I came home to be a civilian again.

The concert started out bad.  Testament (my first time seeing them, too) was good, although they only played 6 songs and the sound quality was horrid.  If the sound was better, they would have been awesom.  Heaven and Hell, I hate to say it, sucked!  Dio messed up the lyrics on the first song so badly, the rest of the band had to "speed up" to catch up to him.  Tony Iommi's guitar work left much to be desired, although it wasn't quite his fault as he was having arthritis problems.  Then, Priest hit the stage.

From the opening notes to the very first guitar riffs, I knew I was in for the time of my life!  The sound quality was perfect and the band was flawless.  It was live, yet they still managed to keep the studio quality of the songs.  Rob Halford (except for looking like the ghost of Yoda) sounded like he did 35 years ago.  They pulled qute a few songs out of mothballs that night, and I couldn't have been happier!  The only (tiny) downer for me, was the fact that they didn't play "The Sentinal".  Other than that, I can truly say I can now die a happy man!  Next it the September 12th release date of Metallica's "Death Magnetic" CD (3 days before my 47th bitrthday, I might add), and I can't wait!

It's funny to see all of you talking about country music.  I have no use for the genre (because I lived with a woman that rammed it down my throat every chance she got, and she made me despise it), and I just married a woman (June 9th in Vegas) who adores country!  She's an Keith Urban and Kenney Chesney fan, yet we both respect each other's listening tastes, and don't "bother" the other with our music.  I realize that this post was way on the other side of the spectrum, but I hadda add my 2 cents worth! :)=)

Thanks for letting me spout off,

    John

    Ed,
I remember Blues Traveler.  Have they done anything new recently?  I sort of lost touch.  The university here has symphony performances sometimes.  I hope to take one  in sometime.

I would have bet money that your last concert would have been Bruce Springsteen.  :-)

    John,
Congrats on your marriage and I'm happy to hear they you can die happy after seeing your dream concert.

You know, I was watching when MTV first came on the air and saw the very first video played.  I don't even try to watch it anymore.  Every time I flip by it is some sort of series and I miss the music.
