I've just finished reading an online article about Mark Spitz.  Apparently he was not invited to the Beijing Olympics.  He is well aware that his record for gold in swimming may be broken this year and he feels slighted because he's not there.

Normally I'd sympathize with him in this matter.  As the living holder of a record that many have now believe may be broken, it would seem like a good idea to have Spitz on hand for at least commentary.  I say normally, because as it stands, I'm kinda glad he's not there.

The tone of his comments in the article seemed as if he was behaving in a very petty manner.  He whines about not being invited, but doesn't say whether or not he attempted to attend on his own or even asked about getting in invitation.  He whines that during the last Olympics they only paid attention to him after the record wasn't broken.  Basically he whines about everything.

I realize he's only human, but it would seem that he would have learned some lessons in sportsmanship and team player mentality when he was a competitor.  He doesn't once say that he's proud of Phelps for all his hard work to get to this point. (In fact he says that had they had a 50 meter race he would have had the chance to win 8 golds too)  He compares Phelps as a copy of himself.  I would have hoped he would have had words of encouragement instead of sniveling self serving drivel to say.

I once looked up to him.  I do remember the '72 Olympics as a child and being proud of his accomplishment.  Too bad he has aged into such a disappointment.

What do you do when your crowning achievement is your physical ability and prowess, and that prowess is fading?

Most groups of people whose identity and self-worth comes from the physical (athletes, models, and to some degree actors) find aging insanely difficult.  Most of us have a little midlife crisis; these people lose all they are and ever worked for - especially as they are outperformed by the younger generation.

Maybe I didn't really suck at gym after all!  Maybe I was just being philosophical about the worth of the body vs. the worth of the mind!   ...nah, I just sucked.  :p

nytquill - I can sympathize with the "pains" of growing old.  This guy is thriving financially though.  It's not like he's lost his ability to care for himself.  I personally would love to meet my successor and congratulate them.

BTW, I have had that same philosophical discussion with myself at the gym.

unique- And it could be he has always been wrapped up in himself.

BTV - yes, that much is evident.  Now that I think of it, maybe I should be feeling sorry for him.

Unique:  I was going to say "How ironic!"  I felt the SAME way when I read the story.  I thought out loud even!  His comment about the other race (if they had it, he would have won it) was just STUPID!

I thought about it from the "Entertainment" side of things.  Should Phelps break the record, Spitz will most likely get paid by the "Today Show" and all other morning shows to talk about "how it felt when Phelps took over the record books" and such.  He'll go on ET, Inside Edition, Extra, Access Hollywood, Live with Regis and Kelly...etc.

Maybe then, he'll be okay with it!  Then again, he is in finance if I recall correctly, from what I read earlier.  My gut tells me that no amount will be enough for this guy when/if offered to go on these shows.

uniquely-ironic.  I did see this on an espn segment the other day.  I was thinking the same thing.  Not once did he mention any kind words towards Phelps, other than "I'm the only other person in the world that knows what he's going through.." or something towards that effect.  But who knows, maybe we would've felt the same thing.  He was the olympic icon since his hayday.  Unfortunately he had to see for himself the cold reality of how media works today...when somebody equal to you or better than you comes along...the cameras dont care for you like they did.  Sadly, he had to find out the hard way.  But you are right, it would've been nice to see a more gracious side of him, instead of the angry, jealous side that he showed.

daily - I would think really have to acknowledge that someone beat his record would be too much for him.

burned - he's had twenty years to get used to the idea that his record might get blown away.  I'd think in that time he'd have come to terms with it more graceously.

you know, i think he's a whiner-  BUT.......i think out of courtesy for his accomplishment, he should have been invited.  i can understand why he might be upset.
  • uniquely-ironic said on Aug 12, 2008....
SL - I also think he should have been invited.  What makes me lose respect for him is that he choose to whine about it rather than ask to be included, pay his own way, etc.  I guess I expected him to be more proactive on his own behalf.

Unique:  Did I call it?  Did we all call it or WHAT?
I just turned the TV on to NBC and there was his mug!
    He was SO nice.
He is SO proud of Phelps
He hopes the record is broken
He IS "rooting for him" all the way!

In what I watched, he made NO mention of not being there.  SHOCKING!  I know...it'll take me a few days to get over it too.  I'm here for you if you need me LOL!

I really like this new Spitz guy I just saw!  The other guy...had to be an imposter whining.  Seriously...you would think he was a different person.

    :-D

Daily - I'm betting the contract he signed to get on the air had a "no whine zone" claus to it. ;)  Ouf course it's much easier to be nice and be supportive when you're "getting your way".
  • dailyachesandpains said on Aug 14, 2008....
LOL!  I believe it!  He also could have been in the "Bi-" part of his "Polar"...I have those Bi parts all the time.  You just never know when the Polar will hit!  I'm Polar right now...just an FYI for anyone LOL!

i didn't hear a blessed thing about this--i haven't been paying much attention, i'll confess--but you know, it's gotta be a hard thing to know that you've achieved as much as you're going to achieve, i would think.

it doesn't excuse his ungraciousness, but it does make it understandable, if you ask me.

    Ed:
He and Michael Phelps spoke via satellite and Spitz was SOOOOO gracious.  I was asking myself "Where'd this personality come from?" for the third time now (including his nasty tone last week).

Mary-Lou Retton and (I can't remember the female swimmers name that held a 19 year world record) swimmer were in China.

From what I heard, they weren't "invited" either, but I could be mistaken.  Somewhere I heard they ponied up on their own.  Oh, and that female swimmer...her world record was broken ending the 19 years to holding the WR title in the event.

I agree, with you now, Ed.  It is understandable, he could have just not reacted the way he did and thought before he spoke, or whined (more than I whine...trust me LOL).

I'm BETTING that Spitz and Phelps will be on EVERY "talk" show and late night show.  Anyone want to bet on what show they'll go on together first?  LOL!
