Having qualified as a teacher I then neded to find a job and quickly. My daughter was 5 and had started school, she had only had one term but I needed to find a job, new home etc and quickly. I had wanted to stay in North Yorkshire, but there were no jobs, at that time everyone was moving to Yorkshire, lots of TV programmes had made it very poplular and I was without hope, also there were 3 teacher training colleges churning out teachers so I decided I would have to leave and travel futher afield.
The college held a careers fair and the Londonm Borroughs had enormous adverts, promising housing, cars extra salary etc etc, but I had not long escaped bruised and battered from London and didnt want toreturn, not with a small daughter so I looked around the fair and..... there I saw it..... an enormous picture, full of sky. If I couldnt have the moors and the heather of the yorkshire dales and my favourte place in all the world, them I would go for sky.. and there it was... allo of it, above east anglia. all I knew was that it was the bit that stuck out on the east sideof the UK, protecting the south coast from the north sea.. wind sky open spaces seemd perfect. I filled in the form and waited.
Within days I had heard from the Council, and I travelled down for an intereview...for a job AS A TEACHER...I went with a suit (HAHA) and was offered a job, it was a pool and so I had to specify what sort of school i wanted.I wanted to teach in a village, I wanted to be the village school tecaher, so, at last, be part of a communirty, for my daughter to come from somewhere.
So I waited and waited to hear from a school and then finally the call came. Would i like to go and visit....so off I set on the 5 hour journey to check out a small school. It had 3 teachers and was growing, there were 80 children and they needed a new teacher and I sounded like I would fit the bill.
As i turned off the main road and started to drive along the river I began to think that mayebe this place would be alright, maybe this was the place, the one I would finally settle in. I pulled up at the small school and the door was opened by a man with a huge smile,"come in " he said, "its playtime come and meet the children".As we went out side the children came up to him, with sore knees, news, needing an arguemnt settled , one small child slipped her hand into his, he just looked down and smiled and sorted out each child in turn, quickly, without seeming to rush them Eventually he remembered I was there!
He had arranged with his wife and family for me to stay at his house so i would have 2 days at school. " 2 days to chnage my life!
