"The Iraq Intelligence Chief, Tahir Jalil Habbush -- a man still carrying a $1 million reward for capture, the Jack of Diamonds in Bush's famous deck of wanted men -- has been America's secret source on Iraq. Starting in January of 2003, with Blair and Bush watching, his secret reports began to flow to officials on both sides of the Atlantic, saying that there were no WMD and that Hussein was acting so odd because of fear that the Iranians would find out he was a toothless tiger. The U.S. deep-sixed the intelligence report in February, "resettled" Habbush to a safe house in Jordan during the invasion and then paid him $5 million in what could only be considered hush money.

In the fall of 2003, after the world learned there were no WMD -- as Habbush had foretold -- the White House ordered the CIA to carry out a deception. The mission: create a handwritten letter, dated July, 2001, from Habbush to Saddam saying that Atta trained in Iraq before the attacks and the Saddam was buying yellow cake for Niger with help from a "small team from the al Qaeda organization.""

    George Tenet (former Clinton guy) has an interesting take on this.

    @smb
    hasn't your side argued in the past that Tenet is a liar?

  • bloc said on Aug 15, 2008....
    for example, tenet claims that the white house pressured the CIA to exaggerate claims about links between al qaeda and Iraq. If you want to hold tenet up as a reliable source then be careful what you ask for. He also claims that the 'slam dunk' claim wasn't about the evidence for WMD, but about the ability to sell the WMD story to the american people.

    Is this your reliable source smb?

    Tenet claims he was at odds with the White House pressuring for the Iraq/Al qaeda link, and has said this publically.  Now you guys are saying Tenet received a memo instructing the CIA to forge a document that proves the link.

    What proof is there that the Habbash letter is a forgery?  Newsweek, the CIA agent's word who in 2005 said in 2003 Tenet told everyone to forge a letter.  The story broke in the London Telegraph that the Habbash letter proved the link, the Telegraph is hardly a conservative publication.

    What is funny about the Habbash letter is Habbash said at the beginning he believed Saddam had no WMD's, the liberal media throws this around like it is scripture, but the letter that comes from the same source must be a forgery or a fake.

    And has it dawned on anyone that if the CIA wanted to fake a link between Al Qaeda and Iraq they would have come up with something a little better than forged letter?

    It doesn't matter, it is widely documented that Osama Infidel met with Iraqi scientists in his search for illegal weapons.

    "It doesn't matter, it is widely documented that Osama Infidel met with Iraqi scientists in his search for illegal weapons."

    this is false. Btw, the taliban met with our government too. Does that mean we need to be invaded?

    I'm also amused by your dodge of tenet's other claims. The the whitehouse pressued the CIA to exaggerate, and that slam dunk didn't refer to the facts.

    Osama did meet with Iraqis I wouldn't say it if wasn't true.  There are far different implications on a meeting between radicals and good country versus a meeting between radicals and bad country.

    The information we had at the time and the world had and believed, it was a slam dunk.
