Well....beside any political point of view about China...(I don't even start but if you want your are free to do so) the Olympic games are on...

Did you watch the opening ceremony? I did.......it has been truly impressive. Poetic and impressive. Almost scary. Elegant and scary.

Beside seeing Putin and Bush shaking their hands..
Vladimir thinking..."Uhmm, how many people did i kill in Georgia today?"
And George thinking.....well.....we know what Bush was thinking...."What's for dinner, Laura? Hope something better than noodles"......

So...are you going to watch the games?
And if so....which sport are you sure not to miss?

Btw........as usual, the Italian team has been the most boisterous and loud of all (even though the most elegant one......ahemmm)
But......jeez, why do we have always look like we never leave our mamma's house? We are such enthusiastic people...lol...

Btw again....GO ITALY!!!....:-D

yes, i watched the opening ceremonies last nite.  i thought they were just beautiful....i loved the show, the fireworks, the parade of nations.
and yes, i'm watching the olympics on tv right now with my sister- we saw women's fencing where the US won all 3 mdeals, skulling, beach volleyball, and now men's swimming (Go Michael!)

i'll be watching with my daughter's tonite.

    we love the olympics....
  • dailyachesandpains said on Aug 09, 2008....
Hey Gingie!  I couldn't even believe the opening ceremony!  A-MA-ZING!!!!
So well choreographed and with all those people involved dancing and moving in synch...a world record had to be set there! :-)

Secret:  I watched too!  We're doing the same thing right now...Olympics and SC!  There's an article already written on Phelps, do not read it because there is no "Spoiler Alert" and I was so irritated by that!  I've been trying to see if we (The USA) can watch anything "in progress" on TV or online!  No clear answer by the confusing charts on what's on live and when if at all.

Did you guys hear that someone from the family of a USA coach was murdered by stabbing in a random act of violence and another was recoving from stab wounds?  It was at a tourist attraction and the killer jumped from the two story attraction and killed himself.  I wish I had the link...I'm sorry, I've been on so many Olympic sites that I can't recall where I read it.

P.S.  Go USA or Italy for Gingie ;-)

I found a link to the story, but it's not the original one I read.
    It's so sad.
  • secretlife said on Aug 09, 2008....
yes, i read that this morning too daily-
what i read also said it was a random act of violence and the killer committed suicide by jumping off the tower.

i wish we could watch live too-  if you find anything, let me know.

i'm even enjoying the dang commercials!!

ginsoul- I missed the opening ceremonies. We were out to dinner and then outside talking. My wife was gone a week and just back.

I watch girls gymnastics and girls figure skating without fail. I have such a great respect for those youngsters, their courage and dedication. The others I drop in on to see what's happening.

I remember an Italian skier a few years ago, the one that came in from a helicopter. I liked him, thought he was a neat dude, ego and all.
  • Eilan said on Aug 09, 2008....
I'm interested in the track and field events, particularly distance running.  I'll probably watch swimming--I think Dara Torres is pretty awesome.  And I like softball as well; unfortunately, barring a miracle, it's not going to be an Olympic sport after '08.

I watch gymnastics, but I always feel guilty about watching it for reasons I can't fully articulate.  I will say, however, that I'm glad the competition age was raised to 16, even though a couple of the Chinese "women's" gymnasts are alleged to be 14.
  • Alyss said on Aug 09, 2008....
I watched some of the ceremony and have managed to catch some of the gymnastics and equestrianism which are two events I great enjoy. I'll try to catch the swimming and the synchro too.
  • gingersoul said on Aug 09, 2008....
Hey Secret and Daily...i just finished to watch the men free style right now.....my Rosolino arrived only 5th...sigh..sigh...

But Jensen has been just too fast...
I am waiting for that torpedo named Thorpe and naturally Phelps...:-)

Swimming is my fav sport to watch......then fencing, beach volleyball, gymnastic, sailing race and rowing. Even arching... fascinating. Oh, and table tennis too..so fun ...

BeyBey...... you are talking about Alberto Tomba...lol......yes, the guy had a lot of attitude...but he was winning a lot so everybody had to forgive him....;-)
  • gingersoul said on Aug 09, 2008....
    Eilan....guilty watching gymnastic? Interesting..

Yes, i agree...i am glad the age has been raised....i still remember the huge scandal around the Russian gymnastics with Olka Korbutz....so tiny and invincible...then we discovered they were undergoing highly arguable treatments to stop them menstruating and growing ....

This extreme situations in sport make me wonder..is that important after all? Risking your own life and future for one medal?

Alyss...equestrian games, uh? Not a big fan. My mom loves them instead. Synchro too is really fun to watch.

I don't know how much of it I will watch because of time issues and what I am doing, but I did watch most of the opening ceremonies.  I thought it was sureal---and almost scary, too like you said!  I was amazed at the technology meshed with the human element, though!

That said, I like gymnastics the most.
  • Eilan said on Aug 09, 2008....
Yup, ginger.  I feel like I'm somehow enabling the overtraining of still-developing young girls and eating-disordered behavior.  Probably doesn't make sense, but oh, well. . .  Like I said, it's difficult for me to articulate.
  • gingersoul said on Aug 09, 2008....
Wombie.........yes, scary...you got it too? Strange feeling...really.....like we were admiring a dangerous dragon at play...but knowing he would have stopped at any moment to pounce and eat us all...
The technology used mesmerized me as well....how advanced these Chinese are after all?
Do we know enough abou them? Beside the fact they make us pay such low prices at Wal Mart?
I should have learned Mandarin not English, dammit.....lol..

Eilan......i agree completely with you....in a way we give them the reasons and the justifications......its like watching a show that we shouldn't  watch....like when we go to the zoo to admire the beauty of the wilderness but then we know what happens beyond those cages...
  • wombat said on Aug 09, 2008....
At first, I thought, "Ok...this is cool...."  But it seemed to go on and on...the use of the multitudes of people, sometimes hiding even....and I caught a comment made by an official.  Not sure who now  (I wasn't listening that closely at the time)   But anyway, he had said, "Well...we have enough people for it!"  Or something to that effect.

    I also must, must add.....

Today a lady bought an American tourist item, and was laughing because it had the old proverbial "Made in China" sticker attatched!
  • dailyachesandpains said on Aug 09, 2008....
Gingie:  I still cannot get over the eerie feeling from the parts that looked like military "formation" and I think that vid you posted showed one spot of the moment I saw when watching it last night.

If you have "On Demand" video, you can watch the building of "The Birds Nest" on the National Geographic Channel.

On what Wombie said about the broadcaster I kind of snickered a little.  Then, I remembered I watched an On Demand documentry of kidnappings in China and the "one child" rule.  Boys are kidnapped more than girls to carry on the family name.  They have to get a PERMIT to have a child and of certain age to marry.  If they want any record of the child to exist and don't follow the "rules" they are fined and have to pay the government a fee.  I don't know how much it translates to in dollars, but it took one couple TWO years (that was considered quick pay-off) and then, shortly after their son was taken from them by a neighbor of the Grandmother and at the point where I'm at, they still haven't found the boy yet, or heard anything of where he could be or who he could have been sold to.  A young couple not authorized to be married (and weren't) were looking for a man to sell their daughter because they couldn't pay the penalty fines!

I'm actually going to try and finish watching that one now.  It's sub-titled so I end up drifting off while reading/watching it.  This will be my third attempt at finishing it!

    Sorry for the over-take lol!

The Chinese are weird bug-aliens wearing man-pants.  They are not to be trusted.

Deep within the corridors of the forbidden city is a gate which leads to a tunnel which goes down to the Super Lucky Golden chamber of the Great Happy Panda.  In it rests a giant, throbbing brain which resembles Cthulhu.  You know the rest.

The funny thing about China is that the thing which the West finds most objectionable about them is their greatest asset.  That being, the total and complete disregard for the rights of an individual.

I am looking forward to the Olympics.

  • dailyachesandpains said on Aug 09, 2008....
Wombie:  I meant the odd comment about having enough people for it and them having that "One Child" rule.

In the end, that couple was still looking for their child who had been missing for 7 months.  The investigator (ex-cop) that was helping them had an emergency call while working on their case about a 16 year old missing girl and they got her back.  It ended with a statement that the government said that the law will go on until at least 2010 and that they're aware that there are more men and not enough women for the future to procreate.  I watched it on HBO on Demand (got to get in my free HBO On Demand while we have the package and the "special offer" runs out from our provider)!  I too saw the Wal-Mart one.  Now that was sad.

Have watched a bit of everything so far. Cant wait for the gymnastics, saw Louis Smith doing his stuff on the P bars for the UK...he's such a good boy, my daughter use to train with his club sometimes, and Beth Tweddle.Once they had my daughter maybe a hopeful for 2012...so I know the pain they go through.

It never ceases to amaze me, that of all the worlds population, 10,000 athletes are there, thats all, just 10,000..what talent and dedication.

And did you see the lack of politics in the shooting ceremony, with the women from georgia and Russia....says it all

Secret & Wombie: I think you were asking what channels?  Sorry if I'm wrong.  Last night it was NBC, USA and MSNBC. I haven't checked the high numbered cable channels, but I think there's a lot more available...I think like 4 more stations???  I watched LIVE when I woke up at 1AM!!   If that gives you an idea of times lol!
