So what is happening in Georgia?  To break is down let me give a little background.  Russia borders the country of Georgia which is broken up into two provinces, North Ossetia and South Ossetia (historically Russian).  In 1989 South Ossetia claimed independence and after a bloody conflict from 1991 to 1992 has run their own affairs.  After coming to power in Georgia in 2004 president Mikhail Saakashvili has said he is going to eventually bring South Ossetia back under Georgian control.

There are an estimated 70,000 people in South Ossetia with an overwhelming majority ethnic Ossetians.  On August 7Th Georgian troops launched an offensive to regain control over South Ossetia.  In the course of this offensive, Russian peacekeepers were killed.  Georgia claims these peacekeepers were killed because they were backing separatists.

The Tbilisi government of Georgia (Tbilisi is the capital of Georgia) has never recognized South Ossetia's independence, even though the south's citizens voted for it in 2006.  Russia has only recognized South Ossetia as part Georgia but sides with a number of separatist leaders.  When Georgia started with its aggression against South Ossetia, Russia responded with bombings and tanks in the region.

I can't imagine why the president of Georgia started this.  Russia's response to the problem seems to be overkill.  They have killed a lot of people and dropped a lot of bombs in what they call a "retaliation."  Georgia needs to establish their boundaries in a reasonable fashion.  If they believe South Ossetia is still part of Georgia they need to hash that out without the use of troops.  Russia needs to tone it down and have a serious talk with Saakashvili followed by a crack up side the head.  There is no reason this had to come to this.  I think South Ossetia should be given the independence they deserve, they've certainly earned it, and paid the price in blood.

    *UPDATE*

North Ossetia is Russian, Russia has been looking for an exuse to pound on the South.  This is a terrible act of aggression on the part of Russia.

I think this highlights the dishonesty in Bush's platitudes. "Democracy is on the march", "Georgia is a beacon of democracy", etc. Georgia was the third largest troop contributor to our war in Iraq.

Georgia believed Bush's rhetoric and the truth is that Bush didn't mean it.

I don't see where exactly this is the President's fault for encouraging a new Democracy.  Obama called for a UN resolution.  He must not be aware Russia has veto power in the UN.

“Russia has invaded a sovereign neighboring state and threatens a democratic government elected by its people,” Bush said. “Such an action is unacceptable in the 21st century.”

It's not his fault, but he should be prepared to backup his rhetoric. If he claims that we will use military force to spread democracy, then what conclusion would Georgia come to as an ally of ours?
  • stopmediabias said on Aug 14, 2008....
I don't think it will come to military force, Russia will become an outcast and piss everyone off and there is nothing we can do even with our military.  I don't see us going to war with Russia.

i agree, but i doubt we'll be seen as an ally to struggling democracies after this.
